Martha E. Mershon, 80, of Sun City, died Sept. 11, 2003. Born in Portsmouth, Ohio, she moved to Arizona from Ohio in 1990. Survivors include her son, Philip of Sun City; sisters, Faye McClay, Jeanne Spradlin, Eunice Gladys Murphy; brothers, Car and Harold Spradlin. Advantage Golden Door Chapel made the arrangements.
Phyllis M. Rosenzweig, 91, of Sun City West, died Sept. 10, 2003. Born in New York, she moved to Arizona in 1975. Survivors include her daughter, Susan Kirkland; sister, Evelyn Levy; four grandchildren. Advantage Golden Door Chapel made the arrangements.
Ilse Rubin, 96, of Sun City West, a personnel manager and translator, died Sept. 11, 2003. Born in Bruckhausen, Germany, she moved to Arizona in 2003. Survivors include her nephew, Col. and Mrs. Walter Urbach Jr. of Sun City West; niece, Joan Urbach; nephews, Robert Urbach, Ronald Urbach; 12 great-nieces and nephews. Robert D. Smith, 76, of Sun City West, manager of quality assurance for RCA Victor records, died Sept. 16, 2003. Born in Indianapolis, Ind., he moved to Arizona in 1986. He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and past president of the Sun West Art Club. Survivors include his wife, Marian; daughters, Eileen Brewer, Julie Berkholtz, Annette Winter, Gerry Lykens; sons, Mark, Kevin, David; one sister, 14 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Col. Eugene Ernest Wilson, 90, of Sun City West, died Sept. 11, 2003. Born in Vancouver, B.C., Canada, he moved to Arizona in 1973. He spent 25 years in the U.S. Army and Air Force. He was a survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor. He was a co-founder and first president in 1979 of the Property Owners and Residents Association in Sun City West. He is preceded in death by his wife, Marcella. Survivors include his daughter, Janice King of Yorktown, Va., Stefani Maggio of Sun City West; son, Gene Wilson; seven grandchildren. Jacqueline Michelle Weaver, born Sept. 11, 2003, died Sept. 13, 2003 in Mesa, Ariz. She was a 1 lb and 2 oz angel. Jackie was preceded in death by her great-grandparents, Jack and Hollis Weaver; her grandfather, Dewey Weaver of Apache Junction; and her great-grandmother Ismael Munoz of Florida. She is survived by her father and mother, Mike and Monica Weaver; her brother Kevin, 8, of Apache Junction; her grandmother, June Nickell of Ajo, Ariz.; grandmother, Nelly Munoz of Florida; grandfather, Cesar Cruz of Columbia; uncles and aunts, Juan Carlos and Debbie MacLean of Virginia, David and Michele Weaver of Colorado, Mark and Esther Weaver of Gilbert, Buck Weaver of Indiana, Kaye Hayes of Apache Junction; and several cousins. Services were held Thursday, Sept. 18, 2003 in Mountain View Memorial Gardens Mortuary Chapel, 7900 E. Main St. in Mesa.
Willa R. Klepfer, 72, Sun City West, died Sept. 4, 2003. Willa was born in Meadville, PA., and moved to Sun City West, Ariz., in 1980 from Carson City, Nev. Willa was a widow to (Bill) Klepfer and is survived by her daughter, Sally Lowe of San Jose, Calif.; her son, David Klepfer of Reno, Nev.; and sisters, Carolyn Montrey of Sun City West, Ariz., and Genevieve Forsythe of Meadville, PA. Lloyd Welker Messner, 92, died Aug. 13, 2003, in Sun City. Born in Coplie, Ohio to Ernest D. Messner and C. Marie Daniels. Upon graduation from Wadsworth High School, he worked for Ohio Match Co. along with having a graphic art and sign painting business. Later, he became an engineer. He worked for the U.S. Navy at Bell Labs in New Jersey during World War II, designing secret weapons and worker on the Corsair. Before and after the war, Mr. Messner, with his wife, Fran and daughters resided I Detroit, Mich., New Jersey, New York, Oakpark, Ill., Indianapolis, Ind., and Ann Arbor, Mich., where he worked as a design engineer for several companies. After moving to Sun City, they owned Aqua Queen Laundry in Peoria and worked in an engineering shop in Youngtown along with doing sign painting. After retiring, Mr. Messner was an avid golfer, playing into his 90s and play in the Octogenarian Tournaments. Mr. Messner was a member in the Masonic Lodge No. 72 of Sun City; Scottish Right Valley of Detroit, Mich.,; was a 32-degree Mason and belonged to the Moslim Temple of Detroit, Mich. His wife, Frances P. Steele Messner preceded him in death in 1996. Also preceded in death his sister Lois Messner Velloney, Claira Messner Randall and his companion Cleo M. Heighberger in 2002. He is survived by three daughter, Moonyeen (Skip) Phillips and husband Jack of Indianapolis, Ind., and Sarasota, Flo.; Toots Nicolay and husband Alan of Sun City West; Dawn Knox and husband John of Goodyear; Four sisters, Donna Messner Lewis, Jean Messner Batdorff, Helen Messner Mills and Carol Messner Mills all of Wadsworth, Ohio; 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be led 11 a.m. Sept. 21 at Sunland Lakeside Chapel in Sun City. Mary Mildred Chubb, 99, Sun City, died Sept. 4, 2003. She was born in Baldwin City, Kan., and moved to Arizona in 1973 from Leawood, Kan. Ms. Chubb, who was widowed, was a homemaker. Arrangements by Advantage Golden Door Chapel.
David William Evans, 64, Sun City, died Sept. 3, 2003. He was born in Illinois. Mr. Evans served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a retired superintendent for the Washington School District. Arrangements by Menke Funeral Home.
Robert R. Rehberg, 80, Sun City West, died Sept. 6, 2003. He was born in Cicero, Ill., and moved to Arizona in 1985 from Park Forest, Ill. Mr. Rehberg was a P.E. teacher and coach for Bloom High School and Prairie State College. He served in the Army during World War II. Mr. Rehberg was a member of Desert Palms Presbyterian Church, Sun City West Softball League and was an avid golfer. He won the 1946 NCAA National Track Championship for the mile. He also was the All American Cross Country Championship in 1941. Mr. Rehberg is survived by his wife, Helen; daughters, Susan Maxfield and Roberta Solis; step-daughters, Patricia Hackett Houtchens, Kathleen Finney and Barbara Blastic; step-sons, David Laipple and Thomas Laipple; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
