RIETH, Wilma Norman, passed away Friday, October 15, 1999. A resident of Tucson since 1948, she is survived by her son, Douglas Fonner of Cupertino, CA; sisters, Phyllis Norman Burroughs of Benson, IL and Charlene Norman Baker of Orlando, FL; brothers, Wayne Norman of Benson, IL, and Harold Norman of Ocala, FL; and five grandchildren located in California and Florida. A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, October 20, 1999 at BRING'S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway., with Rev. Mary Jane Lyon officiating.

SWANSON, Martin 'Marty' J., 85, of Tucson, died October 17, 1999. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Alyce; children, Sally Swanson of Mesa, AZ, Douglas Swanson of Tucson, Nancy (Don) Epperson of Tucson; grandchildren, Scott Swanson, Sarah Epperson and Stephanie Epperson. He was a longtime resident of San Manuel, and a member of B.P.O.E. #2007. A memorial service will be held at ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Avalon Chapel, 8090 N. Northern Ave. at Magee, Wednesday, October 20, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. Donations may be made in memory of Marty to the American Parkinson's Disease Association, 2501 E. Elm, Tucson, AZ 85716.

CRABLE, John Stewart, a third generation Arizonian passed away on Saturday, October 16th, 1999. Born in Flagstaff, AZ, August 8, 1915, John was the son of Francis Drake Crable and Maribell Williams/Crable. He graduated from Prescott High School with honors, and earned both academic and sports scholarships to Stanford University where he graduated with a BBA from the class of 1937. John was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. At Stanford John played tennis but excelled in golf as a prominent member of the Stanford golf team with a block S letter. Mr. Crable served in the Army during WWII. After the war, John continued his education, attending Harvard Business School, and graduating with a MBA degree. Upon graduation from Harvard, John moved back to Tucson. In 1949, he passed his CPA exam and began as the sole practitioner of the prominent firm that came to be known as Crable, Parsons & Dooley. He retired in 1979. His surviving family members include his wife, Natalie Barker Crable; two sons, John S. Crable, Jr., Bruce Crable; daughter, Cynthia Cables; brothers, Francis Crable and Paul Crable; sister, Dorothy Crable; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Memorial Services will be held Friday, October 22, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. at ADAIR FUNERAL HOME, Dodge Chapel, 1050 N. Dodge Blvd. (at Speedway). In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the American Heart Association, 5325 E. Pima, 85712.

CROUCH, Ruth B., died October 16, 1999. Ruth spent the early years of her life in Michigan and then moved to Texas with her father. She attended college in Texas until she married her husband, Ralph. For Ralph's health they moved to Tucson in the 1950's. Ruth worked as a secretary for a collection agency which she eventually bought and operated. Upon retiring she was very active in AARP and Golden Agers, arranging for speakers and programs for club meetings. preceded in death by husband, Ralph Crouch. She is survived by her sister, Edith Roseof Michigan and two nieces. Graveside service 11:00 a.m., Thursday, October 21, 1999 at Evergreen cemetery with Dr. Wayne North officiating. Arrangements by BRING'S MEMORIAL CHAPEL, 236 S. Scott.

ERDOS, Arpad 'Kurt' born September 26, 1922, died October 17, 1999. Raised in New York on the shores of Rockaway Beach. Joined the Coast Guard prior to WWII, where he attained the rank of Boatswain's Mate 1st Class at wars end. Arrived in Tucson in 1949 and established a beauty salon in the old El Conquistador Hotel. After the hotels closure, he established three shops, the most prominent was on 5th and Alvernon. After his hair dressing business, he trained himself as a printer and set up shop on South 6th Ave. After his retirement from printing, he took up various hobbies, most notably, auto restoration and shooting. He was a long time member of the Tucson Rod and Gun Club, and enjoyed spending his time at the range swapping lies with friends and teaching his son and grandchildren about firearms. Survived by his son, Chris; daughter-in-law, Paula; grandchildren, Christopher and Jacquelyn, all from Tucson and brother, Thomas from Texas City, TX. Memorial Service at Tanque Verde Lutheran Church on Friday 22 October at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Diabetes Association of Arizona are requested. Memorial arrangements by family.

ERWIN, Fred Leroy, born in Richwood, Ohio on August 27, 1923, passed away October 16, 1999 in Tucson, Arizona. He is survived by Ann Erwin, his wife of 57 years; daughter, Sheryl (Jim) Thomasson of Tucson; son, Terry (Pat) Erwin of Fountain Hills, AZ and son, Fred Jr. of Los Angeles, CA; his sister, Betty McAllister of Tucson; and grandchildren, James, Joseph, Amy and Beth. A Memorial Service will be held at EAST LAWN PALMS CHAPEL, 5801 E. Grant Rd. on Saturday, October 23, 1999 at 3:00 p.m. Friends may call one hour prior to service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the memorial fund of First United Methodist Church of Tucson or a charity of choice.

LACKEY, Earl A., U.S. Air Force (Ret.), 79, joined his beloved wife, Betty, October 17, 1999. He is survived by daughters, Janice Kofos and Kathleen Lackey; grandson, Michael Kenney; nine brothers and sisters and many nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held Friday, October 22nd at WOLFREY PEACE CHAPEL, 5225 E. Speedway. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Body of Christ Lutheran Church building fund.

MERKEL, Werner Peter, 70, of Tucson, passed on Monday, October 18, 1999. Born in Lindau, Germany, Werner came to New York in 1956 where he became a resident and U.S. Citizen. After living in Manhattan, Virginia Beach, and Aspen, he recently settled in Tucson five years ago. Whether it was climbing Aspen Mountain, skiing the Swiss Alps, winning The Senior Olympics in swimming, or his daily tennis challenges, Werner was always active. He enjoyed success both professionally and personally, and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Werner will be missed most by Lorraine; his sons, Peter and Claude, and Claude's mother, Lisa. Services will be held on Thursday, October 21 at 9:00 a.m. at the EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY 5801 E. Grant Rd., Tucson, AZ 85712: Phone: (520) 885-6741. MORENO, Rudy, 52, of Tucson, Arizona, passed away October 16, 1999. preceded in death by brother, Tony Alegria. Survived by mother, Helen Moreno; daughters, Donna (Ben) Encinas, Priscilla Moreno, Cynthia Moreno, Merlissa Moreno and Jenny Moreno; sons, Rudy Jr. and Tony Moreno; sister, Sally Martinez; brother, Arturo Alegria. FAUSTINO 'TINO' RODRIGUEZ, 72, born February 29, 1927 in Dragoon, AZ, died in La Paz Baja California Sur Mexico, on June 16, 1999. Faustino was retired from Construction Cement Masonry. Both him and his wife Dora moved to La Paz and built a church to serve God. Serving God was his whole life and happiness. He brought happiness to many children and people who attended his church in all ways and means. We love him very much and will be missed deeply by all of us. Tino was the kindest person we ever knew, especially while he was residing in San Diego, California. preceded in death by sisters, Rafela Torrez, Francisca 'Pancha' Rodriguez and Ramona Santa Cruz. Survived by wife, Dora Rodriguez; sisters, Angela Marquez and Catalina Flores; brother, Francisco 'Kiko' Rodriguez; sons, Armando Rodriguez and family, Christopher Rodriguez and Robert Rodriguez and family; daughters, Mercy R. Quihuis and family and Sandra Rodriguez. He also left behind nieces, nephews and grandchildren. Burial was held in La Paz California.

SANDE, Norman C., age 71, of Tucson, AZ, died October 19, 1999. Survived by wife, Carole; daughter, Dawn Cranford; son, Dean Sande; brother, Vernor Sande; sister, Aura Lee Jabs and seven grandchildren. Arrangements by ADAIR FUNERAL HOME, Avalon Chapel, 8090 N. Northern Ave.

EDWARD M. SHUNK, 71, of Tucson, Arizona, passed away September 8, 1999 at Saint Vincent Hospital in Erie, PA. He was born in North East, PA, October 19, 1927. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and retired from the U.S. Navy Reserves in 1988. He worked for Electric Materials Co. in North East, PA before moving to Tucson where he was employed by Duval Copper Mine and retired from Cyprus Copper Mine. He was a member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Old Pueblo Radio Club, Fountain of Life Lutheran Church and Elks Lodge 2532 in Tucson. He was also an active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in North East, PA and Moose Lodge 118 in Westfield, NY. He leaves his wife of 50 years, Lucille Schultz Shunk; two sons, Edward Shunk of Tucson and Fritz (Sue) Shunk of North East; two daughters, Janet (Michael) Daniels of Kannapolis, NC and Julie (Robert) Davis of Tucson; a brother, Donald Shunk of Tucson; a sister, Eileen Sharer of North East; two stepbrothers, Gilbert LeSuer, Mobile, AL and Larry LeSuer, Show Low, AZ; and 10 grandchildren. Interment was at the family plot in North East cemetery. Memorial service 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 23, 1999 at Fountain of Life Lutheran Church, 710 S. Kolb Rd. Memorials may be made to Fountain of Life Lutheran Church in Tucson or St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 30 Clinton Street, North East, PA, 16428 or a charity of donors choice. SYNESAEL, Annie, 93, of Tucson, died October 18, 1999. She is survived by her children, June (Stanley) Tikusis and Richard Synesael; 11 grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren. Friends may call at ADAIR FUNERAL HOME, Avalon Chapel, 8090 N. Northern Ave. at Magee, Wednesday, October 20, 1999 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. with a Rosary at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at ADAIR FUNERAL HOME, Avalon Chapel, Thursday, October 21, 1999 at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Holy Hope cemetery.

WHITMAN, Lila J., 69, died October 10, 1999 in Portland, OR, due to the complications of diabetes. Wife of the late Frank H. Whitman of Tucson; stepmother of Donna and Diane Whitman, both of Tucson; and mother of Billie Lopez of OR; sister of Joan Gerkin and Dale Strange of IN; grandmother of Alex and Arturo Alcantara, Gregory and Joseph Macuilla, David and Michael Lopez. Family suggests remembrances to the American Diabetes Association, 380 SE Spokane, Suite 110, Portland, OR 97202. She will be laid to rest in her hometown in IN.

WORTMAN, Glen A., 77, of Tucson, passed away October 18, 1999. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Liticia and their devoted children, Robert Charles (Jackie) Wortman, Jerry Lynn (Susan) Wortman, Steven Don (Vickie) Wortman; grandchildren, Jeffrey Vold (Jonelle) Wortman, Jennifer Wortman, Adam David Wortman, Cane Michael Wortman and Kelley Wortman also survive. Friends may call on Thursday evening, October 21, 1999 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at VALLEY FUNERAL HOME, 2545 North Tucson Blvd. A Funeral Service will be held at Tucson Primitive Baptist Church, 5921 East Lee St. on Friday, October 22, 1999 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at South Lawn Memorial Park, 5401 S. THOMAS HOWARD BEESTON
June 5, 1946 – October 8, 1999
Tom Beeston was a musician and luthier renowned for his Flamenco guitars. During 30 years of guitar making, repair and restoration of stringed instruments countless friends who began as customers passed through his shop in Jo Morgan's Park Music and later at Triangle L Ranch. Tom and Margot transformed the historic Oracle ranch into a B & B Retreat, which has been an ongoing source of inspiration, good will and 'rocket fuel' cappuccino for yet another stream of friends. Tom's diverse interests included gardening, marine life, computers, ham radio, tools, animals, ethnic music and meditation. Tom experienced a fatal cardiac arrhythmia at home. He left behind his beloved wife, Margot; parents, Howard and Elisabeth; brother, Fred (Kathleen McCarthy); sister, Susan (Erick) Weiland; nephews, Blake Beeston, Kevin Gibson; niece, Andrea Decker; cat of a lifetime 'Dreamsicle'; and many dear relatives and friends. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Elan Vital (PO Box 6130, Malibu, CA 90264). A celebration of Tom's life will be held on Sunday, October 24, 4:45 p.m. at Tohono Chul Park Performance Garden, 7366 N. Paseo del Norte.

JOHN D. BERTOGLIO of Tucson, AZ, passed away October 21, 1999 at T.M.C. Hospice. Born June 15, 1915 in Virden, Illinois. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Edith Reaban Bertoglio; five children, Judith Giffin, Jill Japan, Bettina Miller, John D. Bertoglio III and Miles Bertoglio; four grandchildren, Denise, Jessica, John and Jacob; two great-grandchildren, Andrew and Jack. John was an Army veteran of WWII, and Fire Chief in Naples, Italy after the war. He graduated from college and originally worked for the Corps of Engineers, as far away as Panama. However, his expertise was in mining engineering. A career spanning almost 35 years in copper, nitrate, gold, uranium, etc., which took him and his family worldwide: Chile SA, Mexico, Philippines, Europe, Africa and Japan. He is remembered as a loving father, good provider, a friend, and companion to his wife. Rest in peace…'Daddy'. Our thoughts are with you. Memorial Service will be held Sunday, October 24th, 11:00 a.m. at San Pedro Chapel, 5230 E. Ft. Lowell Rd. In lieu of flowers, donations will be accepted at 'The Old Ft. DOTY, Samuel Eugene, 68, of Tucson, passed away Tuesday, October 19, 1999 after a sudden illness and lengthy challenge with Parkinson's Disease. Born September 15, 1931 in Miami, OK, he came to Tucson in 1946 where on June 2, 1951 he married his hometown sweetheart Virginia and they began their life's work which included co-owning C & D Pipeline with nephew and friend, John E. Carter, Jr. After a short retirement, he moved on to a new venture opening Sam Doty Equipment from which he retired in 1994. One of his many passions led to the founding of the Tucson Model 'A' Ford Club in 1964. Although challenged on a daily basis, he remained an active member of the club. Sam was a kind, caring, trusting, tremendously positive person who always had time for his family, friends, and never seemed to meet a stranger. He loved people, especially children and took great joy in teaching all his grandchildren how to drive a Model 'A'. Sam loved the 'art of making a deal'. If you needed a hand with your Model 'A', trencher, or just needed to talk, he was always available. He is loved by many. He is survived by his loving wife, Virginia; daughters, Sherry (Michael) Routt of Spokane, WA, Terry Doty and Sue (Craig) Preble of Tucson, extended family, Mary (John) Taska of Phoenix; grandchildren, Jeanette (fiance, Fred Kaplan) and Bridgette Routt, Christopher, Chad and Connor Preble, Sarah and David Taska; sisters, Laura Cain, Lila Williams; brothers, James Doty and Craig Doty; numerous nephews, nieces and hundreds of friends. Services will be held on Friday, October 22, 1999 at 10:00 a.m. in EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY. Committal will be held in East Lawn Palms cemetery. FOLTZ, Robert Daniel 'Dan' 48, lost his battle with brain cancer on Tuesday, October 19, 1999. Dan, a life long resident of Tucson, was a 1969 graduate of Rincon High and an electrician at F & M Electric. preceded in death by his parents, Robert E. and Virginia Foltz; and a brother, Rick. Survived by wife, Judith; son, Brandon Robert; daughter, Danielle Fae; brother, Steven (Tina), Duluth, MN; and many dear friends. Memorial Service 1:00 p.m., Saturday, October 23 at EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY CHAPEL, 5801 E. Grant Rd.
