JOANIE CUSHING
September 30, 1939 – October 24, 1999
Cherished wife and soul companion to Colonel Frank N. Cushing, U.S. Army (Retired), Joanie has left behind those she loved in life to join those she loved in heaven. Among those left behind is her son, Michael Henderson and his wonderful wife Sheri; another son, Stephen Henderson; stepson, Glen Cushing and stepdaughter, Wendy Cushing. Joanie was also the proud and loving grandmother of Lindsay, Nolan, Joshua and Conner Henderson.
Cancer overcame Joanie after a spirited and hopeful fight of fourteen months. If God had to take her a least He recognized her goodness and her faith to Him. He was kind in the way He treated her during her illness and was gentle in the way He took her life. She was absolutely wonderful to be around right up to her last God given breath.
Joanie, as a military brat, a U.S. Marine and a military wife, spent many years of her life in wonderful places all over the United States and the world. During her early years she was a schoolgirl in post-war Germany. In high school she was an honor student and cheerleader in Japan. Following high school she joined the Marines for one enlistment. She then spent the rest of her life enjoying opportunities to live on Guam, again in Germany and lastly in Izmir, Turkey. While in Turkey she served as president of the Turkish and American association which supports the excavation of Aphrodisias.
Her legacy is imbedded in the quality of her many, many friendships. In them she left an example of 'how to be to people'. That's the reason she was so widely loved. From shore to shore and around the world there are people who could only be known as the Joanie Fan Club. Those people will heartbreakingly miss her presence.
In lieu of flowers, Joanie would have preferred that donations be given to any local organization which works on behalf of the poor and hungry. In doing so you will be honoring her spirit. We would like to express our appreciation to the wonderful and caring staff of the Tucson Medical Center Hospice.
A memorial service will be held 10:00 a.m. Thursday, October 28, at Rincon Congregational Church, 122 N. Craycroft Road. A celebration of her life will follow the service. Arrangements by BRING'S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway.
