MARKS, Ethel Winifred, 86, of Tucson, went home to be with her Lord in the midst of a meteor shower early Thursday morning, November 18, 1999. Beloved mother of Claudia (Walt) Barnhill of Tucson and Cathy (John) McGowan of New York; devoted grandmother of Kelly and Amy Barnhill and Timothy Struse of Tucson and Amanda and Matthew McGowan of Manlius, New York; great-grandmother of Shawn Rowser. Predeceased by infant son, Victor Jr. and husband, Victor Marks. Ethel was born in the Bronx, New York on October 19th, 1913. She worked for many years as guidance secretary in her daughters' high school in Port Jefferson, New York. She and her husband moved to Tucson in 1980. She lived at the Manor at Midvale since 1997. GILPERT, Viola C., 30-year resident of Tucson, died November 17, 1999, after living an active life for 90 years. She was a square dancer, director of a popular youth group called the Swinging Stars. She also loved to garden, play pinochle, and to fish. She loved to listen to opera and classical music. In her youth she was a concert pianist and violist. Viola joins her soulmate in heaven, Chuck, who predeceased her in 1973. She is survived by two daughters, Joanne (John) Sheppard of Long Beach, CA; and Katherine Mickelson of Klamath Falls, OR; also, four grandsons, John (Joan) Sheppard, Jr., Bob Sheppard, Paul (Irene) Sheppard, and Michael Fritts; and her beloved great-grandchildren, Katherine, Janine, Carissa, Leah, Brice, and Russell. Viola was an adopted member of the family of Al and Betty Jacobs of Tucson. Their friendship dates back to when Vi and Chuck moved to Tucson from California in 1969. She was included in their many family celebrations and received help from them for many years after she was confined to a wheelchair. She was an active supporter of the Tucson Botanical Gardens and the Sonora Desert Museum Wildlife Foundation, never tiring of feeding and watching the birds, chipmunks, and other desert creatures that visited her backyard. She received loving care from her caregivers at Devon Gables during the last lingering months of her life on earth. She will be missed by all. Private family services were held. LADD, Virginia L. 'Jinny', 69, died November 18, 1999. Mrs. Ladd, a Tucson resident since 1971, recently celebrated her 1000th hour of volunteer service as a docent at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. She was also very active in local amateur tennis, adding championship titles of both singles and doubles as well as playing in local league play for Quail Valley Tennis Club. Nature conservation, bird-watching, and multiple oar-powered raft trips down the Colorado were among Jinny's many interests. Originally from Plainfield, New Jersey, Jinny also lived in Maine, Virginia, Florida and England before calling Tucson home.
She and her husband of 44 years, Dr. Robert M. Ladd, raised four children, Bob (Tammie) of Tucson, J. Scott (Pat) of Winthrop, Maine, Bill of Atlanta, Georgia, and Betsy of Wayne, Maine. Jinny also leaves behind three grandchildren, Joshua, Breinne, and Samantha. Her brother Roger (Cam) lives in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to the Nature Conservancy and the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum.
Jinny spent virtually every pre-dawn summer day paddling Wilson Pond in Wayne, Maine checking on the loons that inhabited the lake. A woman at peace in her favorite canoe is how she will be remembered. Arrangements by the Adair Funeral Home, (Dodge Chapel), at Speedway.
McKASKLE, Dan, 85, a resident of Chino Valley, AZ the past two years and a State resident since 1941, died November 19, 1999 in Prescott, Arizona. He was born June 26, 1914 in Greenbrier, Arkansas to Marion Edwin McKaskle and Kellie Amanda (Jordan) McKaskle. Mr. McKaskle moved to Arizona in 1941 with his wife, Gayle. Mr. McKaskle was an Operating Engineer and had worked on every major Interstate Highway in the State of Arizona, including the Glen Canyon Dam and the road to Kitt Peak. Mr. McKaskle also worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad maintaining the right of ways. He spent three years in the Civil Conservation Corps. Dan McKaskle was an avid Horseman and Hunter; he was an excellent Marksman. Mr. McKaskle was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Gayle in 1997. Survived by daughters, Sherleen McKaskle of Tucson, AZ; Betty Ruble of Bartlesville, OK; sons, Darrell McKaskle of Mt.
