JOHN BITTERMAN ROGERS - Born August 7, 1925 in Vicksburg, Miss. to John Bitterman Rogers and India Fairley Rogers, died November 21, 1999 at his Tucson apartment comforted by his sister, Jean Cooper of Denver. A noted newspaperman, his career started at McComb Mississippi High School, when he served as sports editor for the local newspaper. Rogers, former managing editor of The Denver Post a former copy editor at The Arizona Daily Star. Rogers joined the Post in 1961 as copy editor, and was managing editor from 1970 to 1977. He moved to Tucson in 1978 and supervised the copy desk until 1981, when he became editor of the UA Faculty/Staff newspaper, Que Pasa. After early retirement from the UA, he spent a year as copy editor for Motorola. Rogers was born in Vicksburg, Miss. He served in the Army in World War II, receiving a Bronze Star and Purple Heart as an Infantry Squad Leader and Platoon Sgt. in Europe.
He was a graduate of the Univ of Miss. and attended the Sorbonne in Paris and the Univ. of Strasbourg in France. He later worked for the Stars & Stripes European edition. During his years in Europe he developed a passion for opera, that continued until his death.
He won the Denver Newspaper Guild's McWiliams Award in 1962 for his courageous coverage of racial strife at the Univ. of Miss. during the integration battles at 'Ole Miss'. In 1963 he received the Nat'l Conference of Christians and Jews Award for his coverage of the racial upheaval in Birmingham, Ala. during the Rev. Martin Luther King's integration campaign. An avid golfer, even after diagnosed with cancer. He delighted in playing with friends from Stars & Stripes days and from the UA Journalism Dept.
He is survived by a daughter, Michelle Minatta (Michael) of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; a son, Mark Rogers (Kim) of Aurora, Colo.; his sister, Jean Coolper of Lakewood, Colo.; and grandchildren, Ryan and Alissa Minatta and Emma Rogers who were 'the light of his life'.
Family and friends deeply appreciate the devoted care John received from his doctors and surgeons and the nurses and staff at TMC and the TMC Hospice Home Care program. Memorial donations may be made to Arizona Opera Co. or TMC Hospice.
A Celebration of Life will be hosted Sunday, December 12 by special friends, Mildred Holesapple and C. Bickford and Peggy Lucas at 2:00 p.m. at the Lucas' home at Rolling Hills Country Club.

BAUMEISTER, Dale E., 92, died Friday, December 10, 1999. Survived by wife of 47 years, Betty Ann; and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial Service 4:00 p.m., Saturday, December 18, 1999 at Church of the Painted Hills, 3295 W. Speedway. Arrangements by EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY.

EVEREST, Frank K., Jr. In loving memory. December 8, 1950 – December 10, 1999. CWO Retired from the US Army. Survived by his wife of 25 years, Gloria; son, Kendall; parents, Avis and Brig. Gen. Frank K. Everest (Ret.); sisters, Vicky Arnold and Cindy Albanese. A Memorial Service will be held Tuesday, December 14, 1999 at 12:00 noon at BRING'S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway. LENNON, James D., 70, of Tucson, passed away on December 11, 1999 after a lingering illness. He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Alice Lennon; one stepchild, Larry; a twin sister, Jean; and two brothers, Joe and Leroy. He is survived by his wife, Lorene; four children, Johnny, Katie, Mary Alice, Tommy; three step-children, Rita, Kevin, Eddie; one brother, Bob; one sister, Patty; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many other loving family members and friends. James was born in Great Falls, Montana on July 9, 1929. He graduated from Great Falls High School in 1947 and attended Montana State University. He served in the United States Navy from 1948 to 1952. He relocated to Tucson in 1969, making it his new home. He was the president of Apperson Plumbing Service, Inc., and was a member of the VFW, Better Business Bureau and the Chamber of Commerce. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 14, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at SOUTH LAWN MORTUARY. Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, December 15 at 1:00 p.m. at South Lawn Chapel. Interment will follow at East Lawn Palms cemetery.

MARINO, Mary A., 62, of Tucson, AZ, died Saturday, December 11, 1999. Survivors include Joseph Myefski, lifelong partner; children, Dale Marino, Belinda Negrotto, Kenny Marino, all of LA; grandchildren, Keri Meyer, Gaylon Meyer, Mathew Marino, Micheal Marino, Amiee Marino, Nicholas Marino; brothers, Ray Smith, Bob Smith. preceded in death by husband, Roy Marino; parents; and two brothers. Memorial Service will be at ADAIR FUNERAL HOME, Avalon Chapel, 8090 N. Northern Ave., 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 14, 1999. Memorial donations may be made to church or charity of choice in Alice Marino's name. Arrange- ments by ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES.

MARR, Peter D. L., 56, died suddenly December 6, 1999. Peter was born in London, England, on July 28, 1943 to May and Alfred Marr. He emigrated to the United States in 1965, was a former resident of California, and has been a resident of Tucson, Arizona, since 1988. He is survived by stepmother, Anne Farrell; brother, Michael Marr; cousins, Charles Lawrence, Jane Hamilton, and Jacqueline Toms; and close friend, Dorothy Johnston, all of London, England, and many devoted friends in Tucson and elsewhere around the globe. Peter was a long time employee of Butler & Stein, P.C., and will greatly missed by all who came in contact with him there, as well as all who knew him.
A Memorial Service will be held at Southside Presbyterian Church, 317 West 23rd Street, Tucson, Arizona, on Friday, December 17, 1999 at 3:00 p.m.

ERNESTO T. MARTINEZ, 73, of Tucson, passed away December 9, 1999. Ernesto, a retired Railroad Engineer, will be remembered for his charming and caring personality. preceded in death by daughter, Sylvia Martinez; sister, Consuelo Ruiz; brothers, Raul and Mario Martinez. He is survived by his devoted wife of 40 years, Evangelina Martinez; daughters, Flora M. Urrea (Ricardo) and Mirna M. Peru (Ricardo); son, Ernesto F. Martinez Jr. (Sara); grandchildren, Veronica and Ricardo Urrea, Ernesto and Sylvia Martinez, Ricardo and Miguel Peru; and many nieces and nephews. Services were held at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses, Sunday, December 12.

McCAUGHEY, Margie, 78, of Tucson, died December 4, 1999. Born May 26, 1921 in Logansport, Indiana, she was a resident of Tucson since 1947 and always considered Tucson her real home. She earned a B.S. in Chemistry in 1942 and a M.S. in Biochemistry in 1944, both from Purdue University in Indiana. While working in the private sector and the University of Arizona as a research chemist, she earned a Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Nutrition in 1957 from the U of A. After a 14 year break to devote her time to her daughter, she returned to work at the U of A in 1974, where she worked in Parking administration for eight years, and AHSC/Medical Purchasing for the last 17 years. During those years, she also earned a Master of Library Science from the U of A in 1978. Her favorite things in the world were attending Wildcat basketball games for many years, bowling in the U of A Faculty/Staff League she helped found in 1948, and making regular trips to Las Vegas with her family. Survived by husband, William F. 'Mac'; daughter, Lisa (Dennis) Cole, all of Tucson and countless friends whose lives she touched and brightened in so many ways. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, December 14 at 7:00 p.m. at Adair Dodge Chapel, 1050 N. Dodge Blvd., at Speedway. Inurnment will take place in a private service at Holy Hope cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the University of Arizona, W.F. & Margie McCaughey Student Endowment, 1111 N. NOBLE, Ellen W., 83, died December 8, 1999. Sister of Norma Reece, Maxine Johnson, and Ruth Spady. She was preceded in death by her husband, Boyd N. Noble and her daughter, Cheryl Jo Noble. SIMMONS, Harold A., 92, born in Brooklyn, NY June 18, 1907, died December 11, 1999. Married to Ruth Strom, deceased. Survived by his wife of 58 years, Frieda K.; father of Laurence (June); Charles (Marla); Sherry (Sheldon) Levinson; Pamela (Sheldon) Kronowitz; and Robert, deceased; ten grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Graveside Service at East Lawn cemetery, Tuesday, December 14, 1:00 p.m.

TYRA, George 'Buddy', age 50, passed into God's Hands on December 9, 1999. He grew up in Bisbee, Arizona and lived in Hawaii, Wyoming, and Tucson. He leaves behind his loving wife, Christine; daughter, Courtney Rose; and two sons, Derek and Brenon. Also brother, Steve Tyra; sister, Cheryl Tyra; and stepmother, Nora Landye; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins who will all miss him greatly. Memorial Service 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, December 14, 1999 at BRING'S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway. Donations in Buddy's memory may be made to the Arizona Cancer Center, 1501 N. WELBON, Henry G., born September 28, 1904 in Seoul, Korea of missionary parents and died in his sleep December 11, 1999 of heart disease. His family and friends are comforted in that he has joined in heaven Dorothy, his beloved wife of 67 years, who preceded him in death by four months. He faithfully cared for her until her death and the day before his own death took to the printer his life long project of a Welbon family history. His work was done. Left behind are daughters, Betsy Alwood (John) of Lewes, DE; and Priscilla Ewy (Gordon) of Tucson; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. There will be a viewing on Tuesday, December 14 at EVERGREEN MORTUARY from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. and a funeral on Wednesday, December 15 at Desert Springs Presbyterian Church at 2:00 p.m. Burial to follow at Evergreen cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the University of Arizona Sarver Heart Center, 1501 N. Campbell Ave., 85724.

AMADO, Adelina M., 75, of Tucson, Arizona, passed away December 09, 1999. Survived by husband, Peter M. Amado; sons, Richard (Myrna) and Walter (Susie) Amado; sisters, Dolores (Henry A.) Martinez, Sylvia (Al) Martinez; brother, Gilbert (Maxine) Marquez; six grandchildren. Also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 15, 1999 from 4:00 to 10:00 p.m. at CARRILLO'S TUCSON MORTUARY, (South Chapel), 240 S. Stone Ave., with a Rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass will be offered on Thursday, December 16, 1999, 10:30 a.m. at St. Augustine's Cathedral, 192 S. BARKER, Ellen Remley, 71, died December 4, 1999 after a long illness. She came to Tucson in 1966 and worked as a research technician at the University Medical Center and Plant Sciences department. She did volunteer work for the Humane Society, Mobile Meals, Casa de los Ninos, and the International Rescue Committee, where she was honored for resettling Cuban refugees in the 1960s.
She was preceded in death by parents, Norman and Lorine Remley; and her son, Brian Barker. She is survived by sisters, Norma Martin, Sterling, CO, and Laura Blaes, Jefferson City, MO; son, Jeffrey Barker; and grandchildren, Steven and Carolyn Barker, all of Vestal, NY; and former husband, Roy Barker, Tucson.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 16 at the chapel of Our Saviors Lutheran Church, 1949 E. Helen St. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Myositis Association of America, 755 Cantrell, Harrisonburg, VA 22801, or the International Rescue Committee, 122 E. 42nd St., NY, NY 10168.

CAUSEY, Velma Jane, born January 16, 1928, died December 7, 1999 in Tucson. 71, survived by husband, Dale; sister, Barbara Probst; sons, Gregory and Danny; grandchildren, Lisa, Julie and Josh. A Sierra Vista resident for 30 years, she moved to Tucson in 1997 and was a member of Beta Sigma Phi. Memorial service 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 15, 1999 at BRING'S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. CONLEY, Robert, of Tucson, age 60 died Monday December 6, 1999. He is survived by his wife, Doris Conley of Tucson; sons, Demetrius (Rene) Conley, Eric (Denise) Conley, Craig (Anna-Marie) Conley; daughter, Julia Bobby Conley; step daughters, Tracy (Tim) Martin, Vanessa (Reginald) Parsons, Fianna Williams and Jemet Williams; brother, Charles Elliott; sisters, Mary Desmuke, Shirley Jackson and Daisy Dickerson. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. FRISBY, Hortensia, 80, died December 10, 1999 in Tucson, AZ. Born in Cumpas, Sonora, Mexico, she moved to Tucson in 1959, and retired from St. Joseph's Hospital. Hortensia is survived by her daughter, Marty de la Vega of Virginia; brother, Carlos (Maria de Los Angeles) Frisby of Agua Prieta, Sonora; sisters, Maria Marguillan of Agua Prieta, Sonora and Delfina Peraza of San Diego, CA; grandchildren, Debbie (William) Sutton, Karen Ramey and Florencio de la Vega all of VA; great-grandchildren, Eric Michael and Jennifer Marie Sutton both of VA. Many nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. Hortensia was preceded in death by her son Florencio de la Vega of CA.
