REKA POTGIETER HOFF, 75, died from pancreatic cancer on December 10, 1999. She died peacefully and was surrounded by her loving family. Born July 18, 1924, she was an attorney and educator. Reka was in private practice in New York City, 1951-64, legal counsel for the federal government from 1964-81, and Professor of Law and Economics at the University of Arizona College of Law, 1981-95.
Her life spanned a period of enormous change in the status of women. She graduated summa cum laude from Wellesley College in 1946 and graduated from Yale Law School in 1950. But when she began to search for a job in 1950, few law firms would consent to interview her- or any woman. Her first job was as a legislative assistant to the lobbyist for AT&T, for which she was paid the minimum wage. She worked as an associate for the NY law firm Milbank, Tweed, Hope and Hadley (1955-56), and earned a Masters in Taxation from NYU Law School in 1958. She was an associate in taxation at two other NY law firms: Rogers, Hoge and Hills (1959-62); and Paul, Weiss, Rifkin, Wharton and Garrison (1962-64). She was a senior attorney, Office of Chief Counsel, IRS (1964-1972), and a tax law specialist for the US General Accounting Office (1974-1981). In 1981 she earned a PhD in Economics from George Washington University, where she was supported by a National Science Foundation Fellowship. In 1981 she left Washington DC to join the law faculty at the University of Arizona.
Reka contributed articles to professional journals on the US tax treatment of Americans employed abroad, separated spouses, pension trusts, divorced parents, home-to-work trip expenses, tribes, and churches.
She had a life-long love of art and music and history. Reka was a gifted pianist and an avid student in the Humanities Seminar Program at the University of Arizona. She took great joy in her daughters, whom she raised as a single parent beginning in 1960, and in her grandchildren.
She will be deeply missed by her children- Erika Hoff, professor of psychology, Florida Atlantic University; Karla Hoff, international economist, The World Bank; Anne Hoff, CPA, private practice and by her six grandchildren.
