ENGEL, David C., 81, died peacefully on January 4, 2000. Born in Brooklyn, NY, he graduated from Jamaica High School in 1935 and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After serving on the New York City Fire Department for 33 years, he retired in 1976. He lived in Safety Harbor, Florida for 22 years before moving to Tucson in August of 1999. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Dorothy; three sons, Kenneth of Tucson, Thomas of Calverton, N.Y., and Douglas of New Boston, New Hampshire; as well as six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at Tanque Verde Lutheran Church at 8625 E. Tanque Verde Rd. on Friday, January 7th, at 4:00 p.m. by the Reverend Frank Nausin. DR. FERNANDO 'WILLIE' ESCALANTE, 63, entered into eternal rest on Monday, January 3, 2000. preceded in death by parents, Jose Maria Escalante and Eusebia Salvador. Survived by his wife, Maria; daughters, Patricia and Rosa Maria; sisters, Francisca Rivera and Virginia (Dolores) Baltazar; numerous nephews and nieces. Dr. Escalante was born and raised in Old Pascua Village; moved to New Pascua (Reservation) around 1969. He received an Honorable Discharge from the U.S. Army; attended the University of Arizona, where he earned his BA, MA, and PhD Degrees. He served in the Yaqui ceremonies with 'La Tropa' and as a Maestro (Lay Priest). He served two terms on the Pascua Yaqui Council and was elected as Vice-Chairman in 1996. Despite his constant struggle with his illness, he continued to strive for the betterment of the Yaqui Nation. He will be greatly missed, and the wonderful memories of him will never be forgotten. Visitation will take place on Sunday, January 6, 2000, starting at 4:00 p.m., with an all night vigil at San Ignacio de Loyola Church, 785 W. Sahuaro, Rosary at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, followed by a final public viewing at Cristo Rey Church in New Pascua. Interment to follow at Monte Calvario cemetery.

Fuentes (America); son-in-law, Herman Camacho; daughter-in-law, Arlene Bent; grandchildren, Raymond Camacho, Leticia Ford, Cindy Pena, Henry M. Fuentes, III, Analisa Camacho, Hector R. Fuentes, Jr., Laura Fuentes, Frank J. Fuentes, Rudy Camacho and Amanda Fuentes. Also survived by 17 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He retired from the Pima County Highway Department after 20 years of service.

MERCEDES RAY, 73, of Tucson, passed away December 30, 1999, to be reunited with her beloved husband, Roy R. Ray Sr. Born August 13, 1926 in Luzon, Philippines. Mrs. Ray settled in Tucson with her husband in 1948. She loved her children and her grandchildren dearly. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, playing cards and especially cooking. REPPERT, Paul B., 81, of 4065 W. Valencia Road, Tucson, Ariz., died at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, December 23, 1999 in Carondelet Hospice in Tucson. He was born May 25, 1918 in Flora, Ind. He worked for General Telephone Co. of Ind., retiring in 1977 after 31 years and seven months. He married

LEONARD ARNOLD 'SANDY' SANFORD, 78, died peacefully January 4, 2000. Leonard was born May 14, 1921 in Cole Camp, Missouri and moved to Tucson in 1928.
He served in the U.S. Army during WWII as a Medical Aidman and received a Good Conduct Medal, a Philippine Liberation Ribbon with two Bronze Stars and an Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal. Leonard also received a Bronze Star Medal for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against the enemy on 29 January 1945 during the Camotes Island Operation, where his highly inspirational actions were responsible for saving the lives of several seriously wounded men.
Leonard worked as a driver for several years at Tucson Rapid Transit and retired as a driver from Greyhound Lines.

He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Ida Mae (Harper); his four children, Kenneth Michael (Linda) of Phoenix, Arizona, Mark Gregory of Catalina, Arizona, Debbie Ann Carter of Tucson and Gary Steven of Tucson; and three grandchildren, Jason T. Thompson, John M. Sanford and Kathryn J. Prichard.

STOUGH, Robert D., 70, lifetime resident of Tucson, died January 4, 2000. preceded in death by first wife, Allamae; son, Robert D.
