TURNER, John A., 83, entered eternal life on January 25, 2000. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Olive (Payne) Turner; daughters, Carol Ann (Lawrence) Myers, Beth Elaine (Dennis) Wallace and Diane Marie (John) Quinn; a sister, Nellie Holmes; six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter, Betty Helene Turner. Prior to moving to Arizona, John was employed by Penzoil Co. in Pennsylvania. Prior to retirement, he worked for Grant Road Lumber. A visitation will be held on Monday, January 31, 2000 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY, 5801 E. Grant Road. A Memorial Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, February 12, 2000 at 10:00 a.m. in Pima Street Baptist Church, 5056 E. Pima Street. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Parkinsons Disease Association, Southern Arizona Chapter, 1650 E. Ft. Lowell #302, Tucson, AZ 85719, or Pima Street Baptist Church, 5056 E. Pima Street, Tucson, AZ 85712.

YOURGULEZ, M. 'Chapo' Henry, 74, of Tucson, passed on January 17, 2000. Survived by son, Ruben (June) Yourgulez; daughter, Martha Shelton; 10 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren. Memorial Service 5:00 p.m., Saturday, January 29, 2000 at Siloam Freewill Church, 628 E. Adams. Arrangements entrusted to HEATHER MORTUARY.

JUAN JOSE ACUNA, JR. 'J.J. – JUANITO', 4 months, 17 days, became an angel of our Dear Lord Jesus Christ on January 22, 2000. Our baby is survived by his parents, Juan Jose 'Rudy' Acuna and Lupita Renee Cruz; maternal grandparents, Carmen and Manuel; paternal grandparents, Yolanda and Ramon; maternal great-grandmother, Beatriz Gastello; godparents, Magda Sanchez, Manuel Cruz; sister, Clarrissa Lupita; brothers, Craig, Adrian, Xavier; cousin and playmate, Jazmine Cruz; and many cousins, aunts, uncles. An all night wake will begin at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 30, 2000 at Cristo Rey Church, New Pascua, with recitation of the Rosary at 7:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9:00 a.m. on Monday at the church. Burial will follow at Monte Calvario cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to HEATHER MORTUARY.

JESUS S. 'GUACHO' AGUILAR, 78, of Nogales, Arizona, passed away January 27, 2000. He was born in Orange, Texas on May 3, 1921 and moved to Nogales as a child. He grew up in Ambos, Nogales, where he met his wife Virginia, of 58 years. He lived in Nogales until poor health forced him to move to Tucson. Jesus lived his life in dignity and joy. He loved listening to music, visits with his daughters and grandchildren. For 33 years Jesus worked as a civil servant at Ft. Huachuca. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion and the Elks Lodge. Jesus was preceded in death by his daughter, Rose; brother, Everette and sister, Antonia. He is survived by his wife, Virginia; daughters, Soledad Aguilar, Esther Newland, Olivia Ortiz, Mary Ellen Contreras, Alba L. Garcia, B. Lourdes Garcia, Sylvia A. Ortega, and spouses; 18 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, many friends and loved ones. Visitation will be held at SOUTH LAWN MORTUARY, 5401 S. Park Ave., Tucson, Sunday, January 30, 2000 from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. Rosary at 7:00 p.m. Mass at St. Johns Catholic Church, 602 W. Ajo Way, Monday, January 31, 2000 at 11:00 a.m. Burial at South Lawn cemetery immediately following.

DOW, Vernon Thayer, died January 2, 2000. Born February 2, 1912, in Pullman, Washington, he became a mining engineer who worked in copper and lead mines in Colorado, Arkansas, Idaho and Arizona. He later worked for several government agencies including the USGS, the BLM, the Bureau of Mines and the Forest Service. preceded in death by his wife, Celesta Aldersen Dow. He was a passionate and skillful trout fisherman as well as a strong hiker and backpacker. He also loved to dance and to work in the garden. A fair and generous man with both his time and his money, he demonstrated a keen sense of responsibility and duty towards family, community and country. He is survived by his wife, Edna Sanden Dow; two daughters, Patricia and Elaine; a sister, Winifred Fuller; a brother, Delmar Dow; and several grandchildren.

LEDBETTER, Robert E., 77, of Tucson, died January 27, 2000. He is survived by his children, John (Jan) Ledbetter of E. Peoria, IL, Linda Ledbetter of Boulder, CO, William (Linda) Ledbetter of Orland Park, IL, Kathie (Pat) McStay of Vernon Hills, IL; his companion, Cheryl Preihs of Tucson; eight grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Ledbetter was a US Army veteran who had served during World War II in the European Theatre. Services will be held in Chicago. Local arrangements by EVERGREEN MORTUARY & cemetery, N. Oracle & W. Miracle Mile.

McPHERSON, Gertrude (Trudy) Eileen, 77, died January 25, 2000, after a long illness. Survived by daughters, Sydney R. Rogers of Sonoma, Cal. and Sheila M. McPherson of Tucson, AZ. preceded in death by parents, John Jr. and Margaret Henry; husband, Mackey E. McPherson; and grandson, Larry W. Kittell, Jr. Formerly of Franklin, PA, Trudy and family have resided in Tucson since 1955. She was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church; Olana Temple #131, Daughters of the Nile; and LOS Oasis Court #75. She enjoyed volunteer work at the U of A Medical Center and with the Tucson 4-H Roughriders. Trudy loved to play bridge, talk politics, and had a great passion for animals. Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m., Monday, January 31, 2000 at EAST LAWN PALMS CHAPEL, 5801 E. Grant Rd. Interment to follow at East Lawn Palms cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Humane Society of Southern Arizona, 3450 N. Kelvin Blvd., Tucson, Arizona, 85716 or to a charity of ones' choice.

NATHANSON, (Bunny) Vilma, 60, of Tucson, passed away January 23, 2000. She is survived by her devoted husband, Abraham and son, Marc. Also survived by her sisters, Cookie Slimowitz and Leah Schwinn. A Graveside Service was held at Shaari Shalom, Tuesday, January 25, 2000, with Rabbi Bernard Mussman officiating. Funeral services conducted by VALLEY FUNERAL HOME, 2545 N. Tucson Blvd., Tucson, Arizona.

LAVERNE A. WHIPP - A retired Palo Verde High School English teacher, passed away on Thursday, January 27, 2000.
He was born in Springfield, Ohio on July 28th, 1918. He was the only son of Harold and Bessie Whipp. He was a graduate of Olive Branch High School, attended Ohio State University, received his Bachelors of Education degree from Cedarville College and earned his Masters degree from the University of Arizona in 1959.
Mr. Whipp taught for five years in Ohio and 25 years in Tucson, Arizona before retiring in 1981. Mr. Whipp was a charter member of Christ Church United Methodist where he was an active lay leader. He also belonged to the Arizona State Retired Teachers Association, the State Poetry Society and was a World War II veteran.
Survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Margaret; his devoted children: two daughters, Joyce Whipp and Janice Livermon (Earle) of Tucson; two sons, Gary Whipp of Bakersfield, CA, Stephen Whipp (Lyn) of San Antonio, TX; along with his son, John Whipp (deceased in 1983); 11 loving grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, sisters and brothers-in-law, many nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.
A Memorial Service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Monday, January 31, 2000 at Christ United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, give donations to CCUM Fine Arts Ministry.

DONALD K. ADAMS, beloved father and grandfather, died January 27, 2000, following a long illness. He is mourned by his wife of 58 years, Jane; brother, William D. Adams of Omaha, NE; children, Donald Jr. (Sue) of Palm Desert, CA; Col. (Ret. USAF) Catherine Garland of Lubbock, TX; and Gregory Adams (Trish) of High Rolls, NM; grandchildren, Langley and Lindsey Garland, Jayme Aileen and Ryan Adams, and Miles Adams.
Don served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps with the 16th Signal Battalion, and the 158th Regimental Combat Team (Bushmasters) during WWII. Following a break in service he rejoined the army and served in the 82nd Airborne Corps, XVIII Airborne Corps, Instructor at the Signal School at Fort Monmouth, NJ. Following duty in Germany he served as post Signal Officer at Fort Huachuca, was Project Officer of the Environmental Test Facility, retiring after 20 years of service with the rank of Major. His career continued in industry in the field of Electronic Warfare. Don was a member of Sabbar Shrine, Tucson, and Washington Lodge #9 Eatontown, NJ, American Legion Post 58, and the Retired Officers Association.
Any memorial donations may be made to the Tucson Retired Officers Association Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 15299, Tucson, AZ 85708. Don was instrumental in the establishment of this fund.
At Don's request there will be no memorial service.

BELL, Doris May Hunter, 78, died on January 28, 2000. Doris was born on May 30, 1921 in Kansas City, Kansas. She has lived in Tucson since 1958, and retired as a Dental Assistant. Doris will be missed by all who knew and loved her. She is preceded in death by her husbands, Jerry J. Hunter and Norman E. Bell. She is survived by her daughter, Carol (Willard) Turman; and son, Loran (Janet) Hunter, both of Tucson, AZ. Grandchildren include Charlene and Nancy Turman of Tucson, and Jerry (Maureen) Hunter, Jason (Christine) Hunter, and Joel Hunter, all of Louisville, Colorado. Great-grandchildren include Jane and John Hunter, and Elizabeth and Miranda Hunter of Louisville, Colorado. She is also survived by her stepchildren, Suzanne (George Andre) Desrocher and Steve (Darlene) Bell, as well as their children and grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held at SOUTH LAWN cemetery CHAPEL, 5401 S. Park Ave, on Tuesday, February 1, 2000 at 1:00 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to American Lung Association, 2819 E. Broadway, Tucson, Arizona 85716.

FLANAGAN, Irene M., age 72, a Tucson resident since 1953, passed away January 27, 2000. Born April 26, 1927 in Madawaska, Maine. Mrs. Flanagan was a member of VFW 4903 Woman's Auxiliary. She is survived by her loving husband of 27 years, James; sisters, Veronique Parent and Dorilda Kirovac; brothers, Hector and Antime Cote; several nieces; and grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 2, 2000 at SOUTH LAWN MORTUARY, 5401 S. Park Ave.
