MICHAEL E. (MIKE) ZABOWSKY, age 90, a Tucson resident since 1975, passed away March 4, 2000. Born January 6, 1910 in Butler, PA to Joseph and Mary Zabowsy. He was predeceased by his wife, Violet who died in 1984; also by his brother, Stanley, and his sister Rose. He is survived by his sons, Michael and Harold and a daughter, Marilyn; a sister, Ann Jackman; five grandchildren and many other loving family members and friends. Mike was a graduate of the University of Alabama. He was a veteran of WW II, serving in North Africa, Italy, Southern France, and Germany as a 1st Sergeant in a Headquarters section of a US Army anti-aircraft brigade. Prior to and following the war, Mike was employed by West Penn Power Company in Pennsylvania. He worked in several district offices as an Area Development Representative, retiring in 1975 at the corporate headquarters located in Greensburg, PA. In Tucson he has been a member of St. Joseph's Parish and the American Legion Post 36. Mike was a strong, independent and caring person whose actions and expressions could bring a smile to your face and a happy moment to your life. He was a special man-one whom if you ever met, you would not be likely to forget. Mike will be genuinely missed by all. Friends may call at ADAIR FUNERAL HOME, Dodge Chapel, 1050 N. LEVENSON, Jacob M., 98, passed away March 6, 2000. He was predeceased by his wife, Frances, who passed away in 1990. He is survived by his son, Alan (Linda); and grandchildren, Jonathan and Nancy. A native of Providence, RI, he spent most of his life in Boston, where he was a highly regarded and well known real estate attorney. He moved to Tucson in 1986. Jack, known as Jumbo to his family and close friends, was an avid sports fan who played tennis until he was well into his eighties. BILLINGS, Joseph 'Brent', age 77, passed away March 7, 2000. Brent, a retired train dispatcher for Union Pacific Railroad in Nebraska, was born in Pocatella, Idaho, March 26, 1923. He served in the 722nd Railroad Battalion in WWII. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Joyce; three children; sons, Joe of Colorado, Bob of Nebraska; and daughter, Ann (Rick) Berkheimer of Arizona. DAVIS, Charlotte Lefever, 88, of Tucson, passed away on March 8, 2000. She is preceded in death by her husband, Delavan Davis. HOUSTON, Robert C., Capt., USN, ret., 87, died March 7, 2000. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1934 and served on active duty for 30 years. He served in World War II and the Korean War, commanding destroyers and amphibious warfare ships. Capt. Houston was born April 21, 1912, in Mandan, North Dakota, to Cecil and Vinnie Houston. He was married
to Edith Hueper on June 10th, 1939. He was preceded in death by his wife Edith; and sons, Gary Houston and David Houston. He is survived by his son, Robert (Barbara); daughter, Ann (John) Gentry; grandchildren, Robert Houston, Leslie Ann Gentry, Remi Lee Gentry and John Houston Gentry. KLINKEL, Norma, 78, born on April 18, 1921 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and growing up in Arlington and Madison. Earned a B.S. in Business Administration from USD in 1942 where she was Miss PicCampus, chosen by Tyrone Powers as the most beautiful S.D. coed and was a member of Dappa Alpha Theta, and co-valedictorian of the Class of 1942. Norma married
Vernon Klinkel in December, 1941. Housewife, mother and business woman, she and her husband owned the Wayside Motel in Brookings from 1959 until 1965 and Klinkel's Paint Center from 1966 until 1969. Mrs. Klinkel joined InterLakes Community Action as the Director of Head Start and then Senior Citizen's Coordinator. She was active in the South Dakota Democratic Party serving as Vice Chairman from 1966 – 1967. In 1974 she was the first woman elected to the South Dakota Public Utilities Commission where she served from 1975 – 1981. She retired to Arizona in 1982. She was active in South Dakota Consumers League, Brookings Area Betterment Committee, National Association for Community Development, League of Women Voters, South Dakota Board of Social Services, the United Methodist Church and Job's Daughters. She is survived by five daughters, two sons, 14 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. A memorial service is planned for Saturday, March 11, 2000 at 10:00 a.m. at VALLEY FUNERAL HOME, 2545 N. ANN FABER NIEDERHAUSER, 74, passed away in Tucson on March 1, 2000. She is survived by her devoted and loving husband, John Niederhauser; by her sister and husband, Leah and Ernest Schaefer; by her seven children and their respective spouses, Anita and Larry Weissberg, Carlos Niederhauser, Bob and Amy Niederhauser, Jim and Annie Niederhauser, Steve Niederhauser, Bruce and Sheryl Niederhauser, and John Niederhauser, Jr.; and by 12 grandchildren. All the family cherished their relationship with Ann, and will miss her.
Originally from Peoria, Illinois, Ann came west to study and graduated at the University of Arizona. She and her husband then lived for more than 30 years in Mexico, during which time they traveled worldwide to more than 60 countries, before moving to Tucson in 1980. She touched the hearts of all who knew her throughout her life, with her caring, candid good humor; a firm belief in the strength of family; a devotion to excellence; and an endless desire to create and accomplish something each and every moment she lived. A private ceremony has been held among family and some of her close friends.
To those who may wish to make a contribution in memory of Ann, her family suggests that a donation might be made to the Niederhauser Endowment Fund, established by Ann and her husband. This Fund is administered by an international foundation, and is designed to provide continuing support for specific international cooperative projects to which Ann and John have devoted their lives, in an effort to provide more food for the world, while preserving the quality of the environment. Michael Prefling, 85, of Tucson, died March 8, 2000 after a long battle with cancer. He was a WWII veteran and a resident of Tucson since 1956. Survived by his wife, Sally; brother, Fritz of Russellton, PA; a daughter, Patricia of Tucson; sons, Michael (Jill) of Ione, CA, Tom (Brenda) of Peoria, AZ, Richard (Nancy) of Tucson, David (Donna) of Salome, AZ; his 17 grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren. Mike was a hardworking man of integrity, respected and loved. He has gone on to a better place, but he will be greatly missed. Catherine C. Reidy - A resident of Tucson since 1925, Catherine Reidy died Thursday, March 9, 2000 at the age of 97 years. She was born in Carmi, IL., attended the University of Illinois from 1922-1925. Illness brought her to hot, sunny Tucson where she met and married
her husband of 53 years. During her young married
years, while homesteading in the Tortilla foothills, Catherine had a rattlesnake business and to many folks was known as the 'Rattlesnake Queen'. She was descended from the first settlers at Williamsburg, VA., in 1607 and was a member of the DAR. She was preceded in death by her husband, James B. Reidy, Sr.; grandson, James McCall; three sisters; and a brother. She is survived by a large family: James B. (Virginia) Reidy, Jr. of Santa Monica, CA, Daniel J. (Joyce) Reidy, Patrick J. (Joy) Reidy, Cathy (Jay) McCall and Roxy (Dick) Johnson, all of Tucson. Grandchildren include, Stephen Reidy, John Reidy, Colleen Johnson, Bridget McCall, Meredith McCall of Tucson, Michael (Sunny) Reidy of Phoenix, Tom (Terri) Reidy of North Carolina, Rebecca (Bill) Mashburn of South Carolina, Chris (Terry) Reidy of CA., and Capt. Katy Johnson, USAF of Wright Patterson AFB, Ohio; 11 great-grandchildren; and many nephews and nieces. Mildred Munro Underwood, 77, diedon March 7, 2000 after a courageous battle against cancer. She was born on October 24, 1922 to Harold W. and Mildred R. (Hambly) Munro of Providence, Rhode Island.
She is an alumna of Pembroke College in Providence and Bryant College in Smithfield, Rhode Island. She married
Lester Lyle Underwood on January 19, 1946 who preceded her in death on April 17, 1984.
She is survived by four children, Robert (Bonnie Reed) and Carol of Tucson, Bruce (Susan) of Sahuarita, Arizona and Joyce Underwood Munro of Ann Arbor, Michigan. Other survivors include a brother, John Munro of Oxnard, California; sister, Gertrude Wright of North Attleboro, Mass.; and eight grandchildren, Jill E. Broughton and Katharine S. Broughton of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Erik Reed, Megan and Brendan Underwood of Tucson and Sarah, Josh and Rachel Brelsford of Sahuarita.
Mildred was a member of the Munro Clan U.S.A. and also The Seven Pipers Scottish Society of Tucson. She was an avid reader after retiring from her position as a secretary in the University of Arizona College of Nursing. She enjoyed traveling with family and friends, especially to England, Scotland, Ireland, Alaska and Hawaii. She will be remembered fondly for correcting her children's grammar and for the best apple pie in the world.
