Abraham H. Sles
June 8, 1905 – March 11, 2000. A Whole Life.
Goodness, kindness, gentleness, sweetness, generosity, philanthropy, humility, compassion, piety, family devotion in the extreme… G-d of Blessedness took him from us peacefully upon a Sabbath day. So much he gave to our family, our country and our world… A pioneer, a self-made man, a true leader.
Abraham Sles was a Founder of the United Cerebral Palsy Society. An Attorney for 53 years, he set up the legal structure in this country for the services for the handicapped back in the 1940's and 50's when there were no such services. Other countries modeled UCP. He also established a Yeshiva and a senior citizens home in Union, New Jersey. For many years he was President and 'Gabbai' (a rabbi's aide) of Congregation Beth Shalom, Union, New Jersey. For 11 years he served as personal counselor to a Belgian Baron and Baroness. Throughout his law practice he lost very few cases and was respected for his honesty, integrity, incorruptibility and extreme humanity. He specialized in corporate and bankruptcy law but handled a vast variety of cases.
He knew many great people of our time and always chose to remain in the shadows. Son of immigrants of Latvia, Abe Sles supported his parents, brothers and sisters by working in a box factory, making wooden boxes, then becoming the bookkeeper. He put himself through law school (now Rutgers) and graduated 'summa cum laude'.
Abraham Sles lived in New Jersey, New York and Tucson.
He was married 49 years to Sarah Goldstein Sles and is survived by his daughter, Andrea Lynn Tal; his son, Steven Lawrence Sles; and his granddaughter, Harmony Shalva Sles. The funeral was Sunday, March 12, 2000 at EVERGREEN MORTUARY & cemetery, Tucson, Arizona, with Rabbi Israel Becker officiating. The burial will take place at Beth Israel cemetery, E. Woodbridge, NJ.
I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
