PETERSEN, Norma M., 71, died May 3, 2000. ABBEY FUNERAL CHAPEL, (888-1111).

WARD, Henrietta D., 87, died May 6, 2000. Arrangements by BRING'S MEMORIAL CHAPEL, 236 S. Scott.

JOHN HUGH ALMOND, 32, gentle giant, gentle spirit, devoted father, friend of many; lost his life in Phoenix Wednesday night, May 3, 2000. After moving to Tucson from North Carolina in 1983, he attended Cross Middle School, CDO High School and Pima College. He moved to southern California in 1993 where he competed on various golf mini-tours, and in 1998 moved back to Tucson to be close to his family and friends and to work in his father's remodeling and restoration business. John Hugh gave his love and friendship freely and generously to us all, and we can take comfort in knowing that he has found peace in his home with Jesus, who taught us how to love each other and who fulfills his promise of everlasting life.
His funeral service was held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 8, 2000 at the Hartsell Funeral Home's Lefler Memorial Chapel. Rev. Ben Wilson officiated with burial following in the Fairview Memorial Park, Albemarle, NC.
A memorial service will be conducted in Tucson at Northminster Presbyterian Church, Ft. Lowell and Tucson Blvd., at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 11, 2000 by Dr. Andrew Ross. Visitation will follow after the service at the church.
He is survived by his father and stepmother, John W. and Judith Byron Almond of Tucson; mother, Marie Snuggs Almond of Collierville, TN; daughter, Kirsten Marie Almond of Tucson; brother, Russell M. Almond of Tucson; sisters, Cris Robson of Tucson, Stephanie L. Olivieri of Sydney, Australia; paternal grandmother, Katherine M. Almond of Albemarle, NC; maternal grandfather, Hugh Snuggs of Albemarle, NC.
Memorials may be made to the John Hugh Almond Memorial Junior Golf Fund, 3200 S. Dodge Blvd., #2, Tucson, AZ 85713.

RAUL O. ALVAREZ 'HARPO', 70, of Tucson, Arizona, passed away May 07, 2000. preceded in death by parents, Carmen and Florencio Alvarez; brothers, Florencio, Roy, Carlos and Robert Alvarez. Survived by wife, Irene G. Alvarez; daughters, Irma (Abram) Valenzuela, Marcia (Robert) Arreola, Edna (Alfred) Castro, Yolanda (Joseph) Phininzy and Barbara Alvarez; sister, Josephine Valdez; 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 10, 2000 from 4:00 to 10:00 p.m. at CARRILLO'S TUCSON MORTUARY, (South Chapel), 240 S. Stone Ave., with a Rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass will be offered on Thursday, May 11, 2000, 10:30 a.m. at Santa Cruz Church, 1220 S. 6th Ave. Interment to follow at Holy Hope cemetery. DEMAS, John, 77, died Thursday, May 4, 2000 at the Greenwich Hospital after a long battle with Cancer. Born April 26, 1923 in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was the son of the late John Zissis and Anthea Manthopoulos Demas. John was a veteran of WWII and served in the European, African and Middle Eastern theatre of operations. He was a cryptographer in the OSS during his military service. He graduated from New York University in 1947 and was a member of Beta Gamma Sigma honor society for business. John was Vice-President of sales for the Bradens California Food Products in the metropolitan New York area for over 40 years. After his retirement he formed his own food brokerage company dealing wholesale to manufactures. He was an active member in the YMCA business men's club for many years and an avid volleyball player. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Anita and daughter, Anthea of Greenwich, CT; son, Christopher (Anne); and grandchildren, Alex and Elizabeth of Tucson, AZ; and brother, Tom of Riverside, CA. Services were private and burial was in Putnam cemetery. There will be a memorial service on June 17 at the Greek Orthodox Church of our Savior, 2195 Westchester Ave. East, Rye, NY. Donations may be made in his memory to the Pathways Fellowship Club, 175 Milbank, Ave., Greenwich, CT 06830.

HUNTER, Ralph W., born April 19, 1910 in Altoona, PA, died May 5, 2000 in Tucson, AZ. preceded in death by son, Gary. Survived by wife of 64 years, Cleo K.; son, Dennis (Barbara) of Annville, PA; grandchildren, Christopher of Boston, MA and Vicki of Tempe, AZ. Mr. Hunter was a graduate of Penn State and a conservationist for the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture. Memorial Service 2:00 p.m., Saturday, May 13, 2000 at Northminster Presbyterian Church, 2450 E. Ft. Lowell Rd. at Tucson Blvd., with Dr. Andrew J. Ross officiating. Interment Boalsburg cemetery, Boalsburg, PA. Arrangements by EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY.

LEWIS, Millie Jordan, age 79, resident of Santa Fe, N.M. from 1973 to 1997, died on May 7th, 2000. She was a loving mother and friend to many. She was born in Lafayette, IN on April 15th, 1921 and graduated from Purdue University. She lived for many years in E. Lansing, MI before moving to Santa Fe. In 1997 she relocated to Tucson, AZ for health reasons.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Jordan and Charles Jordan and one brother-in-law, Micheal Ricks; and one sister-in-law, Mary Louise Jordan.
She is survived by one sister, Veronica Ricks of Arlington, VA and one sister-in-law, Jane Jordan of Sedona, AZ.
In addition, she is survived by three children, Charles Lewis of Flagstaff, AZ, Barbara and Martin Gavurnik of Santa Fe, N.M. and David Lewis of Tucson, AZ; grandchildren, Brett, Dana and Jamie Lewis and Alex Gavurnik.
A memorial service will be held in Tucson, AZ pending arrangements. Call ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Avalon Chapel, at 520-742-7901 for details. The family asks that donations be made in her memory to the Tucson Public Library, Nanini Branch, 7300 N. Shannon Rd., Tucson, AZ 85741.

KENNETH SANFORD OLSON - Died on Friday, May 5, 2000, at the age of 78.
Survived by his son, Gerald; and daughter-in-law, Linda; grandchildren, Andrew, Matthew; son, David; and daughterin-law, Terry; Wife, Adela; and children, Edger 10, James 9, Kirstne 7, Kenneth Brian 5, and Kayla 3.
Ken was born April 22, 1922 in Makoti, North Dakota. In 1962 he moved his family to Arizona to be a professor at the UofA's College of Agriculture and served as Arizona's Cooperative Extension State Program Leader, and in 1969 to 1974 as State Agricultural Program Leader. Later he served as 4-H Specialist, until he left the University in 1995.
While a 4-H Specialist he initiated new Record Book and Awards Program guideline, and a new Small Animal Showmanship method that is still utilized today and has been adopted by many states.
He influenced the lives of many young people. He served a 4-H Club Leader of the Arizona Wildcats 4-H Club in Tucson, for over 20 years, many of his club members were selected for State and National honors. He judged small animals at fairs throughout the state and gave countless workshops to 4-H members.
A memorial service will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 11, at the Lutheran Church of the Ascension, 1220 West Magee Rd., Tucson. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials in the name of Kenneth S. Olson to the Arizona 4-H Youth Foundation, P.O. Box 210036, Tucson, AZ 85721-0036.

OWEN, Grace J., 90, of Tucson, AZ, died May 5, 2000. She is survived by son, Leonard D. Owen, Tucson; daughter, Sue Rasmussen; 13 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, seven great-great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert P. Owen and son, Wade J. Owen. She was a member of First Southern Baptist Church and the Eastern Star. A memorial service will be held at First Southern Baptist Church, 445 E. Speedway Blvd., Tuesday, May 9, 2000 at 3:30 p.m. with Pastor Ron Hart officiating. Donations may be made in memory of Grace to First Southern Baptist Church.

ROSS, Mrs. Marie, age 82, died May 6, 2000 at Mountain View Care Center. Born November 3, 1917 in Canton, OH. She is survived by three brothers and one sister; three sons and four daughters, . Ronnie, Bonnie, Beverly, Charles, Mary, James, and Christine; 23 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Marie was a retired school bus driver and a very loving mother and grandmother and will be dearly missed. We love you Mom.
Services will be held Thursday, May 11 in Canton, OH at Reed Funeral Home. Contributions to the Alzheimer's Association preferred.

SCHIFANO, Isidoro, 97, died May 8, 2000. Father of Joseph (Ana) Schifano and Al Schifano; grandfather of Isadore, Joseph Matthew, Michael Isadore and Allyson Vita; great-grandfather of Anthony, Adam, Stephanie, Alyssa, Alexander and Benjamin. preceded in death by wife, Vita and daughter-in-law, Alice. He was a charter member of the Italian American Club. Isidoro was a resident of Tucson since 1945. He immigrated from Sicily to the United States in 1921 through Ellis Island. He worked in the auto industry in Detroit for 25 years before moving to Tucson in 1945 where he worked in the construction industry. He was recently honored by the Civano Corp by having a street name after him – Isidoro Schifano Lane in recognition of his being one of Tucsons pioneers in the development of the city. Mass will be offered 11:00 a.m., Thursday, May 11, 2000 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 215 S. Craycroft. Burial will follow at Our Lady of the Desert cemetery. Friends may call from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 10, 2000 at BRING'S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway. Donations in Isidoro's memory may be made to Italian-American Club Scholarship Fund, 2537 N. Stone Ave., T/A 85705.

SHAW, Eva, 80, passed away quietly with her family in attendance on May 7, 2000. There will be a short visitation at BRING'S BROADWAY CHAPEL, at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, May 10, 2000. Mass will be offered 11:00 a.m. May 10, 2000 at Santa Cruz Catholic Church, 1220 S. 6th Ave. Burial at Our Lady of the Desert cemetery. Lunch to follow at Far Horizons, 7570 E. JOHN STEFANOVICH, 80, went to be with his Lord, Friday, May 5th, 2000. He is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 53 years, Thelma; his sister, Anna Buda of Marana, Arizona; his son, John Michael; daughter, Nancy Reeves and her husband, Trey Reeves of Cary, North Carolina; and two grandchildren, Natalie and Jared Reeves.
John was born April 22nd, 1920 in Gary, Indiana. John retired from US Steel in Gary, Indiana in 1976, and has been a resident of Tucson since that time. He was a WWII veteran, ex-POW, and disabled veteran. John has been serving as Chaplain for the 13th Airborne Veterans Association, the City of Tucson Ex-POW Association, and the ExPOW Association for the State of Arizona. John has been a diligent and regular volunteer at the Tucson Veterans Admin. Hospital, where his contribution has been recognized with numerous citations and certificates of appreciation. John's greatest loves were his family, his two grandkids, his garden, and his kitchen, but most of all, he loved serving his Lord and Savior.
Friends may join the family at VALLEY FUNERAL HOME, at 2545 N. Tucson Blvd., Tuesday evening, May 9th, from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be offered at 9:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 10th, 2000 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, 1375 S. Camino Seco. Interment will be at Our Lady of the Desert. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Southern Arizona VA Health Care System, 3601 S. 6th Ave., Tucson, AZ 85723, Attn. STERN, Beth D., 44, of Tucson, died May 7, 2000. Survived by parents, Carol and Alvin D. Stern; sisters, Lora (Yoram) Druker of Israel and Ellen Stern of Tucson; brother, Stephen J. THORNTON, Sylvia Fry, 53, of Prescott, AZ, (formerly of Tucson), died May 4, 2000. Survived by husband, James David Thornton; parents, Harold and Dorothy Fry; children, Patrick Joseph Dougherty, Jr. and Margery Dougherty Bunting; brother, Lawrence Fry; grandson, James Zackery Bunting and many others whose lives she touched over the years. We will all miss her. Memorial service will be held 1:00 p.m. Thursday, May 11th at EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY CHAPEL, 5801 E. Grant Rd., Tucson. (Vickie) Babbitt of Tucson, and James (Sheryl) Babbitt of California; grandchildren, Christopher and Shawn Babbitt; brother, Richard B. (Lois) Babbitt of Pennsylvania. Memorial Service 2:00 p.m., Saturday, May 13, 2000 at Christ Presbyterian Church, 6565 East Broadway, Rev. Steven P. Melde officiating.
