CAROLYN J. (CJ) IDLEWINE - A true and special friend was born in Quincy, Norfolk County, Massachusetts, December 1, 1943 and passed from this life to the next in Tucson, Arizona, May 15, 2000.
Just call her CJ. She served in the U.S. Navy and the Federal Aviation Administration as an Air Traffic Controller and Supervisor of Controllers from 1962 until her retirement in 1997. She knew how to keep the planes apart and on-course as well as anyone in the business, and saw the world from both sides. She also held a Commercial Pilot's license and was rated for instrument flight.
She became a docent at the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum, where she could usually be found Fridays and Saturdays. She made frequent weekday trips to local elementary schools preaching the gospel of the desert. She received her 1000 hours of docent service recognition award just over a week before her death. She was a big Summer Saturday night fan, doing Night Sky interpretation and Star Stories. Her enthusiasm was an inspiration to all docents who knew and loved her.
CJ defined life. Humor, friendliness, compassion, determination, courage, loyalty, generosity and an insatiable appetite for learning (and ribs) are some of the things that come to mind.
CJ loved Lake Powell, and thought of it as her special church. She spent the last week of her life on board a houseboat there, accompanied by nine special people on a journey of the spirit borne not only by the waters beneath, but also upon the thoughts and prayers of the many friends who could accompany her only in spirit.
She is survived by a brother, a sister, a number of nieces and nephews, and her 'furkids' LS and Andy. She leaves behind a host of others whose lives have been made richer by knowing CJ.
A memorial will be held Saturday, May 27, at 4:30 p.m. at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, 2021 N. Kinney Road. CJ requested that any memorial donations be made to either the Best Friends (no-kill) Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, Utah (http://www.bestfriends.org) or the ArizonaSonora Desert Museum (http://www.desertmuseum.org).
