PETER C. SCIORTINO - Was born in Utica, New York on May 28, 1911. When he was five years old he moved to Bagheria, Sicily with his family. At age 14 he sailed alone for America where he gained employment in Brooklyn, New York, as a baker and met his future wife. For years he worked only to send his earnings home to his father and two sisters in Sicily. In 1933, at age 22, he married
Grace Sciortino. One year later the first of their three daughters, Rosalie was born. In the next nine years they were blessed with two more daughters, Phyllis and Jean Ann. In 1939 Peter Sciortino moved to Milwaukee to start his own bakery. The war broke out and the Sciortino's returned to Brooklyn to be near family. Once there, Mr. Sciortino got a job to aid the war effort. His factory job allowed him to make glider parts for warplanes where he worked beside his brother-in-law. When the war ended the Sciortino's returned to Milwaukee where the legacy of Sciortino Bakery continued. His first bakery was located in the historic third ward. It serviced mostly retail outlets. His bread and cookies were soon to be famous throughout the Milwaukee area and beyond. In 1954 he bought the building on the corner of Humboldt Ave., and Brady St. The building still bears his name. From that location Mr. Sciortino continued to produce the most sought after bread and cookies. His bread was featured in Milwaukee's top restaurants and sold at many retail outlets. In 1976 he tried his hand at retirement and relocated to Tucson, Arizona. For the next 20 years he lived in Tucson but visited Milwaukee often. He traveled between the two cities as if they were in neighboring states and entrusted the business to his family. In 1997 Mr. Sciortino decided to call it quits and sold the business.
Throughout his life Mr. Sciortino was loved so much by so many. Always willing to help in whatever way possible, always with a supportive word. His loved ones will always remember him with a joke to tell and a smile that would quickly spread throughout the room. His love and generosity were boundless.
With his passing Mr. Sciortino leaves behind Grace, his loving and devoted wife of 67 years. He will be dearly missed by his daughter, Rosalie Maglio and her husband, Alfred; their three children, Fran Wallace (Jeff), Grace Maglio (Mark Pembroke), and Jackie Hussey (Matt). He was preceded in death by his second daughter, Phyllis Sciortino Hill (Herb), but is mourned by her son, Peter A. Sciortino (Shirley). He will always be remembered by his youngest daughter, Jean Ann Arden (Don Kay, recently deceased) and her daughter, Trish Ventura (Robert). Mr Sciortino was blessed with 11 great-grandchildren that will always remember the joy, the laughter and the time spent with them.
Thank you Poppie for making every meeting a celebration. You'll be remembered with the same smile you always left us with and with the never-ending love that you always gave.
