Harriet Schwenker Feldman AKA Dr. Harriet Baritell MD - Of Tucson, passed away on Sunday, June 18, 2000 at the age of 80.
Harriet was born in Moline, IL. on April 18, 1920. The Schwenker family moved to Tucson in 1938 due to an illness in the family. About that same time, Harriet made a casual remark to a friend, of her desire to become a nurse and the friend replied 'Why be the doctor's slave instead of the doctor?' the idea took root and soon her dream was to become a reality.
Harriet enrolled at the University of Arizona and completed the pre-medical curriculum. She then entered the College of Medicine at the University of California at Berkley, from which she received the degree of a doctorate in medicine in June of 1945. She interned at the Permamente Hospital in Oakland, California. She then returned to Tucson and spent eight months in 1946 and 1947 as a resident doctor at the Tucson Medical Center. She left TMC to start her private practice in Internal Medicine with Doctors Benson Bloom, Clarence L. Hobbs and Mayer Hyman.
In 1958, she married Howard S. Feldman, a graduate of the University of Arizona College of Law. After Harriet served fourteen years of private practice as Dr. Harriet Baritell, she swapped her medical career for six adopted children. She stated once that, 'I've always felt that medicine and children are the two best things that could possibly happen to you.' She also said she 'had changed only from doing a little bit of good for a lot of people to doing a great deal of good for six children who needed a home and loving parents.'
In her limited spare time, Harriet enjoyed square dancing, camping, traveling and was also an avid animal lover.
While Harriet did not openly practice medicine, she always maintained her medical license and helped countless friends and family that relied on her for medical advice.
Harriet felt that she had a very fulfilling life and one of her goals was to see the year 2000. She had a wonderful sense of humor and was loved by all who knew her. She will be greatly missed for her warmth, kindness, wisdom and compassion.
She was preceded in death by her husband Howard Sheldon Feldman (1928-1991) and her son Tad Louis Feldman (1961-1994). She is survived by her children, Tacy Lynn (Bryon) Patton, Tammy Lane (Michael) Mitchell, Ty Lincoln Feldman, Terril Lee Feldman and Tiffany Lee (Steven) Freeland; her grandchildren include Michael Paul McKissack, Michelle Lee McKissack, Jerika Leigh Bergey and Tiarra Monique Feldman.
