BERNARD (BEN) J. KOPPY - Born Bernard Kopczynski on June 9, 1922 passed away June 16, 2000 of cancer. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mary; sons, Karl of Houston, TX, Brian (Kathy) of Tucson, Donald (Donna) of St. Louis, MO; and nine grandchildren.
Originally from Detroit, MI, Ben was a Tucson resident for the past 23 years. He served in the Marine Corps during WWII. He was a cigar salesman and an accordionist. He was a member of the Tucson Polish Club, Elks, Knights of Columbus, Fraternal Order of Eagles, as well as active in the Jacob's YMCA and a charter member of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church.
A memorial mass will be celebrated at a later date.

LESTER, Kathleen 'Kitty' A., 87, died Sunday, June 11, 2000. preceded in death by husband, Thomas. Survived by brother, Aubrin Anderson of Tucson; and several nieces. Memorial service 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 24, 2000 at First Southern Baptist Church, 445 E. Speedway. Arrangements by EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY.

PORTALATIN, Carmen, 90, of Tucson, Arizona passed away June 18, 2000. She was born June 09, 1910 in Manati, Puerto Rico. She is preceded in death by her husband Joaquin Portalatin. She is survived by two daughters, Anna Maria Rivera and Yolanda Pellon; five grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; one sister, Anna Santino; and two nieces. Carmen was a loving mother and grandmother and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. A Memorial Service will be held Thursday, June 22, 2000 at 10:00 a.m. at SOUTH LAWN MORTUARY, 5401 S. Park Ave. Inurnment to follow at South Lawn cemetery.

READ, John Bradley, 31, of Tucson, passed away Monday June 12, 2000. He is survived by brother, Darrell Taylor (Rebecca); sister, Angela Green; girlfriend, Alisa Young; niece, Tavara Hegedus; nephews, Maurice Green and Isaiah Taylor. We will love you forever, J1. SPRINGER, Arthur E., 93, of Tucson. God called him home Monday, June 19, 2000. He was a loving and kind husband and father, who was blessed with a special family and friends. He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Ruth Springer; son, Rick Springer; four grandchildren, Kathy, Roger, Margaret, Joey; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two children, Terry and Nancy Springer.

TORREZ, Maria M., 94, of Tucson passed away Monday, June 19, 2000. ALFSON, Marjorie Prees, 67, passed away on June 20, 2000. She is survived by her loving husband, Larry Alfson; seven children; sixteen grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, June 24, 2000 at 11:00 a.m. in EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY, 5801 E. Grant Rd. A visitation will take place on Friday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Committal will follow Saturday services in East Lawn Palms cemetery.

Pierrette LeClere Berard, 74, died June 20, 2000. Mother of Mark Berard of Tucson, AZ, Michael Berard of Great Falls, VA., and Dennis Berard of Honolulu, HI.; Grandmother of Michael and Nicholas; Companion of Wilfred Declercq of Tucson, AZ; many nieces and nephews in Quebec, Canada also survive. Pierette graduated from Eastern Michigan University, she emigrated to US from Canada. She married Alphonse Berard and came to Arizona from Detroit in 1971. In 1980 she came to Tucson to manage the Tucson Office of the State Department of Disability Determination until her retirement. Memorial Service 10:00 a.m., Saturday, June 24, 2000 at BRING'S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway. Donations in Pierrette's memory may be made to the Shalom House, 2590 N. Carmen N. Espriu, 55, of Tucson, Arizona, passed away June 20, 2000.
preceded in death by her parents, Bernardino Nunez and Benita C. Nunez. Survived by husband, Jose Maria Espriu; sons, Jose Luis, Raul Francisco, Christopher Rene and Michael James Espriu; sisters, Benita Marinez, Dora Benavidez and Natalia Nunez; brothers, Francisco and Bernardino Nunez; also survived by many beloved nephews, nieces and friends.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 22, 2000 from 4:00 to 10:00 p.m. at CARRILLO'S TUCSON MORTUARY, (North Chapel), 204 S. HARRIS, Lillian Marie, born July 12, 1923 in Long Beach, California, resident of Tucson since 1953, passed away June 14, 2000, after a brief illness, in Tulsa, OK. A loving wife of 55 years to Robert 'Bob', who predeceased her on January 12, 2000. Beloved mother to four children, Richard (Karen Stapf-Harris) of AK, Robert 'Gordo' (Mary Noble) of Australia, Steven of Tucson, Lynne (David) Gurthet of OK, and Myrna Harris-Howell of Oracle, AZ and Yolanda Curon of Tucson; grandchildren Richard, Staci, Randall, Nathan, Greene, Golden Moon, Steven, Jennifer, Charles and Jennifer; seven great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Hazel Tracy of Margate City, NJ; numerous nephews and nieces, including Kathy Sanders. Lillian's many dear and helpful friends include neighbor Virginia McCreery and childhood friend, Lorraine Thompson Swain. Predeceased by father, C.F. 'Fred' Wells; mother, Elizabeth; and sister, Alice McInturff. Graduated Wilson High School in Long Beach, Calif., Honored Queen of the Long Beach Bethel of Job's Daughters. B.A. in Botany, University of Arizona, 1968 and member of Phi Kappa Phi academic honorary. Lillian raised four children and had a hand in raising many others. Her house was always open. She loved gardening, mystery books, sports, camping, fishing and travel. Lillian and Bob traveled over 250, 000 miles by rail. Played tennis for 10 years with 'The Wednesday Bunch', an ardent U of A Wildcat supporter particularly as a football fan and season ticket holder for 46 years. Long time Pima County election precinct worker. The family expresses their sincere appreciation to Tulsa's Saint Francis Hospital and Hospice. No formal services planned. Remembrances may be made to the American Cancer Society. Friends are welcome to visit between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. Friday, July 7, 2000 at the family home. Lillian and Bob's ashes will be released according to their wishes on Saturday, July 8, 2000. Cremation Society of Oklahoma, 918-599-7337.

HEILE, Gladys S., 96, died June 18, 2000. Gladys was born March 23, 1904 in Cincinnati, Ohio to Grace and Loren Shaw. She was a registered nurse in her younger years. Gladys was preceded in death by husbands, Charles B. Sand and Elmore B. Heile. Survived by sister, Fern M. Curtis; nieces, Kathleen (Ted) Holmes, Maxine (Gerry) Ault; nephew, Bill (Cheryl) Curtis; and several grandnieces and grandnephews. Gladys died peacefully at Quality of Life ACH where she had been residing for the past four years. Graveside service 10:00 a.m., Friday, June 23, 2000 at East Lawn Palms cemetery. preceded in death by wife, Mercy Montano; son, Avelina Montano, Jr.; daughter, Diane Hernandez; father, Robert Montano; mother, Enduviges Montano; sisters, Lupita Chavez and Angie Pena. Survived by daughters, Dolores (Steve) Vega, Geraldine McCormick, Debra and Theresa Hernandez, and Monique Montano; sons, Jimmy Montano and Edward (Ruth) Romero; sisters, Lucy Galvez, Ophelia Montano, Rita Martinez, Esther Duarte and Sylvia Moreno; brothers, Ray and Robert Montano; also survived by 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

THOMPSON, Oscar I. Born September 23, 1923 in Lovington, NM to Denver and Bea (Merchant) Thompson. passed away June 20, 2000. Survived by his wife of 49 years, Jean; his loving little dog, Murphy Brown both of Tucson; sister, Doris Schuster of Ohio; brother, Richard (Joan) Thompson of NM; niece Phyllis (John) Weller, their children Amanda and James; nephews, John (Mary) Cooksey, their children Matya and Noah, Bruce (Pam) Cooksey; aunt, Dorothy Merchant Shoults; and oh so many, many dear friends from every place he lived and worked. He rodeoed several years and most of his working years were as a cowboy and ranch foreman. He and Jean retired to the Tucson area in 1986 and have had 14 wonderful years here. There will be a memorial service at the Marana Stockyards, 10:30 a.m., Thursday, June 22, 2000. Graveside service 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 23, 2000 at TMP South Lawn. Friends may call from 8:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. Friday at BRING'S MEMORIAL CHAPEL, 236 S. Scott.

JOHN E. BUNCH an Arizona Native from Elko, Nevada and formerly of San Manuel, AZ, age 63, passed away June 22, 2000. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, papa, teacher, coach, miner, and a cowboy. He was the safety director at Cortez Gold mine and also taught at San Manuel High School for 28 years. He is survived by his loving wife, Ralphie; his children, Michael (Tami) of Tucson and Bagdad, AZ, Jerry (Sandi) of Tucson, AZ, Trace (Angie) of Colorado Springs, CO, Kelly (Tom) Bley of Las Vegas, NV, and Kori (John) Brown of Elko, NV; and his 14 beautiful grandchildren. He devoted much of his life mentoring and helping young students prepare for their future. He was a caring individual and a strong family man who enjoyed the outdoors. His hobbies were fishing, hunting, and horseback riding.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, June 24 at 2:00 p.m. at Casa Adobes Baptist Church, 10801 N. La Cholla Blvd, Palo Verde Building. In lieu of flowers, donations to the John Bunch Memorial Scholarship Fund are being accepted at Community First Bank, 490 Avenue A, San Manuel, AZ 85631
