'Scoup' Bettymae Harper, beloved mother of Christy, Jim, and Patricia; grandmother of Schuyler, Jerry, Artemis, and Sara; and second mother of many whose lives she touched, passed away early on the morning of June 17th due to complications of pneumonia. Born on November 24, 1926, Scoup will be missed deeply by the many people with whom she shared her love, humor, and gentle joy of life. Scoup lived in many different places, mostly growing up in Elko, NV, where she was a cheerleader and valedictorian for her 1944 Elko County (Wells) High School No. 2 graduating class. She played the Hawaiian guitar in the Hollywood Bowl. She attended University of Nevada, Reno where she became a member of the Gamma Phi Beta Sorority. Scoup married
Jerry Sullivan in 1948. Jerry joined the Navy and became a Jet fighter pilot. They had a little girl (Christy) in January of 1950. In May, 1951, Jerry was shot down over Korea, and his body was never recovered. Six weeks later Christy came down with polio. Scoup faced it all with incredible courage and grace. In 1952 she met and married
Calvin Harper (Calvin died in June, 1998). Scoup had her second child, Jim, in October 1953, while Calvin was getting his degree in mathematics. After Calvin's graduation they moved to Vista, California where in February, 1958, she had her youngest child, Patricia. Calvin's work in the Aero Space industry had the family moving about every five-six years. Simi Valley was the next stop in 1967. Scoup was finally able to finish her degree in Library Science from Palomar College. Then in 1972 the family moved to Tucson. In 1980, Scoup was diagnosed with emphysema so she quit smoking and joined the Arizona Lung Society. Scoup was very outgoing and she loved people. She started selling Avon in order to make friends. Soon her kitchen was the meeting place for all her friends. She collected stray cats and people. If you had a problem, Scoup was the one to talk with. Non judgmental, but honest, she would give you her opinion whether you wanted it or not as well as lending money to those in need. But, she will be mostly remembered for her remarkable sense of humor. Scoup could find amusement in almost every circumstance. She always said it was better to laugh than cry. In a previous life Scoup must have been a banker, for there is no other way to explain her unorthodox finance system. In a small metal dark green box she kept envelopes with cash in them: groceries, yard supplies, gasoline, recreation, kids allowances and even one marked 'Calvin's allowance'! She loved her cats, Miss Kitty & Shadow, all manner of books and the written word, wind chimes in trees, the smell of orange blossoms and star jasmine and sagebrush in the morning. And she had the scariest left hand turn from Speedway onto Kolb in the history of the Old Pueblo.
Scoup was loved by (and she loved in return) almost everyone she met. She will be greatly missed.
Her memorial will take place at HUDGEL'S SWAN FUNERAL HOME, at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, June 26th, 2000. Please make a charitable contribution to Arizona Lung or the animal shelter of your choice in lieu of sending flowers.
