PAULINE CORRELL MITCHELL, 78, native of the Old Pueblo, died July 3, 2000. Born December 29, 1921, she was the second of four children of Paul Poe Correll and Zilpha Hager Correll. preceded in death by her husband, William A. Mitchell, Jr., and by her sisters, Nan Sowerwine and Zilpha Hamilton; she is survived by her brother Paul Correll of Tucson, her children Dr. Bill Mitchell of Chapel Hill, NC, Douglas (Sally Jo) Mitchell of Tucson, Barbara Mitchell (Jurgen Herweg) of Olalla, WA, her ten grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Pauline was a graduate of Tucson High School (1939) and attended the University of Arizona. She was a past president of the Tucson Junior League and a former member of the Governor's Commission on the Status of Women. Following her husband's second retirement, they moved to Key Colony Beach, FL where they continued their longstanding enjoyment of skin diving and water skiing begun with their children. Following her husband's death there in 1976, she served on the Key Colony Beach city council.
Pauline returned to the company of old friends in Tucson in 1979, and to the readily available support of her son, Doug and daughter-in-law, Sally Jo. Over the next several decades, Pauline enjoyed a widening circle of friends through her support of the arts as well as her own career as a pottery artist. During the last decade of her life, she developed additional friendships through the Tucson Medical Center water exercise group, through her interest in energy healing and through the Circle of Grandmothers which often met in her home.
The last year of her life was particularly enriched by her transformation of her yard into a self-sustaining desert garden, and by her rekindled romance with her old high school beau, Rex Thompson of San Anselmo, CA. Following an unexpected several month illness, she died peacefully at home looking out on her garden – cared for by her family and others who loved her. Grateful for her love and the example of her life, we mourn her passing.
A memorial service will be held for her Saturday, July 8 at 1:00 p.m. at the Chapel at East Lawn cemetery. There will be a reception at the Arizona Inn from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. following the ceremony. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest donations to your favorite art or charitable organization.
