MATTHEWS, Lawrence E., 80, of Tucson, passed away Saturday, July 29, 2000. Survived by his wife of 59 years, Lorraine; daughter, Marian (Jack) Newby; sons, Larry (Marilyn) and Jerry; grandchildren, Troy (Cindy) Matthews, Pat (Sheli) Reddix, Sean Reddix & Jeremy Matthews; great-grandchildren, Broc, Zachary, and Jacob. Ralph Dennis Scalpone - Ralph passed away on July 29, 2000. He was born in NYC on May 21, 1916 and had been a Tucson resident since relocating here in 1962. He was a former baker/owner of Eagle Baking Company until his retirement in 1974, but he did continue to bake birthday cakes for his growing 'brood'. His family was his life and he was proud of all of them.
He was a wonderful husband and an loving father, grandfather/great-grandfather. Survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Eva; siblings, Salvatore Scalpone and Katharine Freda; daughter, Barbara (Dave) Malmquist; sons, Dennis (Pat) and Nick (Ruth) Scalpone; 8 grandchildren, Bonnie Storrs (Dale Schnell), Scott (Janet) Thompson, Dennis (Kris) Scalpone, Lisa (Ben) Ball, Laura Scalpone (Jeff Richardson), Nicole (Jason) Hatch, Travis and Noelle Scalpone; and 7 great-grandchildren, Brittni & Marissa Storrs, Michelle & Julie Scalpone, Nathaniel Hatch, Cara Scalpone, and Lindsey Ball. He was affectionately known to all as 'Pop-Pop'. We all love you, Pop-Pop!

SMITH, Gretchen H., age 81, of Tucson, AZ, passed away on July 27, 2000 at University Medical Center. Prior to their arrival in Tucson in 1979, Gretchen and her husband were engaged in farming near her birthplace in Buffalo Center, Iowa. His warm and sunny disposition was a good fit with the Tucson community she loved. She is survived by Howard, her loving husband, of 49 years; as well as her son, Duane, daughter-in-law, Barbara; and grandchildren, Ian and Megan of Pleasant Valley, New York. She is also survived by sisters, Emma and Darlene; and brother, Robert; as well as a large extended family that she cared for deeply. She was a member of the Holy Way Presbyterian Church, 4221 W. ANNIE MAE (ANN) GIBBONS - A longtime Douglas resident, passed away July 29th in Tucson. She was born in Paluxy, Texas on August 10, 1908. She was preceded in death by her husband Robert E. Gibbons, daughter Betty Ann Hawkins and son David A. Gibbons. Ann is survived by her children Bobbie Jean Donaldson (John) of Scottsdale, Margaret McClain (Dave) of Tucson and son, John H. Gibbons (Janice) of Tucson. She has fifteen grandchildren and thirty-six great-grandchildren.
Services will be held in Douglas at Brown-Page Mortuary on Wednesday August 2, at 11a.m. Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 7-9pm.
GIOLLI, Rito Eldo, 95, of Oro Valley, AZ, born in Italy on June 16, 1905 passed away on July 30, 2000. He was loved and still is loved by all. His good nature, no temper, happy persona made him loved by everyone who were lucky to know him. He loved the outdoors (especially gardening) and being with everyone in his family. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Isolde; daughter, Carla Fuggiti and her husband, Giampoalo; son, Giancarlo Giolli and his wife Helen; five grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. He will be in our Hearts and missed by all very much. We all wish for him to rest in peace and to be happy with all those family members and friends that have gone before him. LENA RACHEL GURVITZ - Age 89 years, passed away July 30, 2000. Born November 5, 1910 in Richmond, Indiana. preceded in death by her husband, Arthur, after 58 years of marriage. She is survived by sons, Ronald (Devera) Gurvitz in Indianapolis, IN, Terry (Vivian) Gurvitz of Newbury Park, CA; daughters, Anita (Charles) Travis of Marana, AZ, Cheryl Barton of Tucson, AZ; sisters, Florence Lichtman of Greenwood, IN, Charlotte (Donald) Palay of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Marian Weissman of Reynoldsburg, OH, Esther (Irv) Yessenow of Lima, OH; brothers, Abe Jaffe of Chandler, AZ, Charles (Pearl) Jaffe of Toledo, OH; ten grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren; eight nephews; and seven nieces. She retired from TMC Hospital in 1973, and with Arthur, they took a long awaited honeymoon to Hawaii. HELEN J. KENNEDY 78, of Tucson passed away July 29, 2000. She was born April 6, 1922 in Vincennes, IN, the daughter of Carl Preble and Ethel Prouillette Preble. She graduated from High School in new Castle, IN in 1939. Helen, who was preceded in death by husband, Charles, is survived by her daughter, Kathleen Pisano; son, Carl Kennedy; her brothers, William E. Preble (Lou Ann), Robert E. Preble (Katherine), Charles G. Preble (Maria), Tom O. Preble, Tim J. Preble (Karen). Her grandchildren, Patrick Joseph Kennedy and Damien Leonardo Pisano also survive. While attending High School, in addition to being a member of the National honor Society, she was pianist for the school orchestra and for the choral group. She choreographed the annual school musical variety show, the 'Crescendo Varieties.' In more recent years, she produced, directed and choreographed the Cabrini Carousel' and annual musical show sponsored by the St. Frances Cabrini Choir. Helen was also the Choral Director at her parish, St. Frances Cabrini. Helen was also a choreographer who began to learn to dance at the age of three and started teaching dancing before she was sixteen. She was known throughout the community for her willingness to put her many skills to use working with such institutions as the Junior League of Tucson. She has been employed at Musicland for more than thirty years. Friends may call on Tuesday, August 1 between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. at St. Frances Cabrini. A funeral mass will be offered on Wednesday at 12:00 noon also at St. France Cabrini with with entombment to follow at Holy Hope cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to St. Vincent de Paul.
JOSE R. LAGUNA, 74, of Tucson passed away on July 26, 2000. He is survived by his daughters, Priscilla (Jerry) Padalino; Bobbi (Alex) Leon; one sister, Mary Helen Quiroga; one brother, Nick (Rebecca) Laguna; four grandchildren, Daniel J. and Sean A. Murray, Joseph S. and John C. Padalino; two great-grandchildren, Elysandra M. Murray and Zachary A. Padalino; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Laguna was born in Alto, Arizona. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater of Operations. He received numerous commendations which included the silver Star, Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. After returning from the service he worked at Asarco and retired after forty-two years of service. The family would like to extend a special thanks to St. Mary's ICU staff for their support and dedication. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 02, 2000 at SOUTH LAWN MORTUARY, 5401 S. MARCON, Ernest, passed away July 29, 2000. Predeceased by loving wife, Marie Marcon. Survived by loving family, daughter, Sharon Wells (Frank); son, David Marcon; and brothers, Albert Marcon (Joan) and Aldo Marcon.
Ernie lived a full life. In his youth he was an outstanding athlete & he kept a keen interest in sports & particularly in the Wildcats throughout his days.
Ernie was active in many ventures during his 40 years in Tucson. In the 60's he was associated with his brothers in the Commercial Sign Business. Thereafter he was involved with many sales organizations, including La Salle University Extension Division and Realty Executives where he developed a great number of rural home sites.
Ernie continually gave a great amount of his time and substance to help Tucson become a better town. A few of his many civic activities were: Chairman of the City of Tucson's Planning Commission and Campaign Coordinator for the 1976 City Council Recall Committee.
Ernie took pride in being a very hard worker and enjoying it all. His motto was, 'I fight Poverty, i work, Everyday!' In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Casas de los Ninos. Services will be held at WOLFREY PEACE CHAPEL, 5225 E. Speedway, Friday, August 4th at 3:00 p.m.

POSTELLE GORDON VAUGHAN - Born November 8, 1915 on a homestead near Courtland, Az, in the Sulphur Springs Valley, died July 29, 2000 in Tucson, AZ. He grew up in Yuma, graduating from Yuma High School in 1933. His father and two uncles were locomotive engineers on the Southern Pacific Railroad, and in 1937 he began his railroad career on the SP, becoming an engineer. In 1948, he became an SP officer and was stationed at five different locations in Texas, California and Oregon before his transfer to San Francisco as a labor relations manager in 1958. He retired in 1977 and moved to Tucson in 1988. Survived by wife of sixty years, Evelyn; sons, Pat of San Luis Obispo, CA, Rich (Mary Jane) of Tucson; grandchildren, Jim, Brianna, Alan and Andrew; two great grandsons; sister, Ruth Hunt; brother, Bill. preceded in death by grandchildren, Patrick and Sacha; daughter-in-law, Gabrielle. The family wishes to express their gratitude to the doctors, nurses and staff at St. Joseph's Hospital for their help and support during his illness. Services were private.
