Self-described as a 'farm girl with cornstalks growing out both ears, ' Glad went to a one-room schoolhouse in rural Minnesota, had to board in town to go to high school, and was the first local girl to be accepted at the nursing school at what is now known as the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, where she studied under the Mayo brothers. Glad did private duty work during the depression and then traveled to Hawaii to practice nursing, where she turned to the head of the tenor Tito Schifia, who refused to perform unless the 'Pretty Lady' attended his concert. Returning to the mainland, Glad worked for the Camp Company for several years before marrying Jimmy Best and starting her own business, the Gladys Gray Shop in New York City. After retiring, Glad and Jimmy moved to Tucson about 1968.
Glad especially enjoyed fishing and visiting her family in Minnesota in the summer. She spent the past ten summers in the Brainerd area, where at age 90 she caught a 7 lb walleye pike, and had just returned from this year's trip.
Known as 'Auntie' to numerous Tucsonans and their children and as 'Gladys Best' to hundreds of Salpointe Catholic students and their teachers, Glad will long be remembered for her ability to encourage those she met to forgive others and to be better people.
