Richard Dick Holland

Richard Dick Holland, 69, former managing editor of the Sierra Vista Herald/Bisbee Daily Review in the 1980s, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, in Miami.
Dick died of complications of hepatitis he contracted after receiving contaminated blood during a transfusion for serious wounds during the Korean War. During that conflict he received a Silver Star and Purple Heart medals for leadership as a noncommissioned officer squad leader during the defense of Sandbag Castle in the Heartbreak Ridge and Punch Bowl area of Korea in 1952.
He and another soldier of the 25th Division wrote a book about their exploits called The Wolfhounds of Sandbag Castle, 96 Days of Defense.
After being hospitalized for a year and finally discharged, Dick, a native of Detroit, went to college and graduated from the University of Miami in 1960. He interned for the Miami News. He was then hired full-time by the newspaper, which became the Miami Herald.
Most of his work at the Florida newspaper was as an editor, and he worked on breaking stories such as the failed bay of Pigs invasion in Cuba.
He and his wife, Lee, moved to Arizona, where he went to work for the Herald/Review, finally becoming its managing editor.
Herald/Review Senior Reporter Bill Hess said Dick was his mentor, who taught him the importance of community news.
His finesse in editing made a reporters story shine through, Hess said. Dick was a wordsmith whose ability to turn a phrase just made any reporters copy better.
A heart attack in the mid-1980s led Dick to ask to be relieved of the managing editors position. He became the papers news editor, where he continued to work directly with the reporters.
Dick is survived by his wife, a daughter Ann, of Cleveland, Tenn.; two sons, Steve of Cleveland, Tenn., and Randy of Honolulu; and four grandchildren.
