William C. Avey

William C. Avey, 69, a 27-year resident of Hereford, Ariz., passed away Saturday, Oct. 16, 1999, at the Sierra Vista Regional Health Center.
He was born March 11, 1930, in Yellville, Ark., to Thomas and Margaret Avey.
William served his country in the Army both in Korea and Vietnam. His service metals include the Purple Heart and Bronze Star with V. He retired from the Army after 30 years in 1979 at Fort Huachuca with the rank of command sergeant major.
Sisters Bernice and Faye and brothers John and Clyde preceded Mr. Avey in death. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Mary of Hereford; sons, Thomas Avey of Houston, Texas, Robert Avey of Toledo, Ohio, and Timothy Avey (Jill) of Albuquerque, N.M.; a brother, Ed Avey (Sibyl) of Harrison, Ark.; a sister, Ruth Duffy (Bill) of Yakima, Wash., and grandchildren, Danielle, Taylor, William, Tyler, Mitchell and Perri.
Graveside services with military honors will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 21, 1999, at the post cemetery on Fort Huachuca.

Carroll B. Tommy Thompson Jr.
Dec. 3, 1921 - Oct. 17, 1999
Carroll B. Tommy Thompson Jr., LTC (AUS Ret) of Sierra Vista, Ariz., passed away on Sunday, Oct. 17, 1999.
He was born Dec. 3, 1921, in Quincy, Mass., to Carroll B. and Gertrude Thompson. The family moved to Philadelphia, Pa., where he graduated from Philadelphia High School. He joined the Pennsylvania National Guard in 1939 and was commissioned as a second lieutenant on May 29, 1943, at Fort Benning, Ga. He met his wife, Eleanor, there and they were marriage on Nov. 9, 1943.
During WWII, he served in the Philippines, where he was wounded in action. Immediately following Japans surrender in 1945 he was sent to that country for occupational duty with the 24th Infantry Division. In 1948, he was transferred to Germany, where he served with the 16th Infantry Regiment of the 1st Infantry Division. In 1953, he was sent to Korea, again assigned to the 24th Infantry Division.
Tommy was awarded the Purple Heart, Combat Infantrymans Badge and the Bronze Star, along with many other medals and citations. He was very proud of his 22 years of military service.
Upon his retirement in 1962, he became a Civil Service employee with the U.S. Army Intelligence School at Fort Holabird, Md., and moved to Sierra Vista when the school was relocated to Fort Huachuca, in 1971.
Tommy is survived by his wife Eleanor of Sierra Vista; sons, Richard of Alabama and Bruce (Nancy) of Sierra Vista; daughters, Eileen Craig of Texas, Patricia Boone (Tom) of Maryland, and Laurie Mercer of Virginia; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; his sister, Marilyn (George) Welsh of Pennsylvania, and numerous in-laws, nieces and nephews, all of whom loved him deeply and will miss him very much.
Graveside services with military honors will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 20, at the Fort Huachuca Cemetery. A reception for friends and family will follow at the home of his son and daughter-in-law in Sierra Vista.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances in his memory may be sent to the National World War II Memorial Campaign, 2300 Clarendon Blvd., Arlington VA 22201. This project was very special to him.
If we cannot do him honor while he's here to hear the praise, then at least lets give him homage at the ending of his days. Perhaps just a simple headline in the paper that might say "Our Country is in Mourning for a Soldier Died Today."

George Edward Hardt
Dec. 13, 1913 to Oct. 17, 1999
George Edward Hardt, 85, of Bisbee Junction, Ariz., died on Sunday, Oct. 17, 1999, at the Copper Queen Community Hospital.
Hardt was born Dec. 18, 1913, in Bisbee Junction to Gustave Andrus Hardt and Emma Mary Magdaline Weber Hardt. He was raised and lived in Bisbee, Ariz., his entire life and attended Bisbee Public Schools.
Hardt served in the Civilian Conservation Corps during World War II as a camp cook. He worked for Phelps Dodge Corp. for more than 35 years as a crane operator before he retired in 1979. He was also a member of the Elks for more than 35 years. He was a lifelong member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Warren, Ariz.
Grandpa Great Heart, as he was known to his great-grandchildren was a gentle, compassionate, loving man who taught three generations of his family to love and honor Jesus Christ. Even though he suffered in recent years from a leg injury and subsequent surgeries, he never complained.
Hardt is survived by his wife of 62 years, Lorene Mina Hardt of Bisbee; three daughters, Judith Fisher and her husband Joe of Thatcher, Ariz., Mary Ellen East and her husband Leon of Bisbee, and Carol Ellis and her husband Dave of Mt. Home, Idaho. He also is survived by nine grandchildren, Skip Fisher, Terry Fisher, Karen Caylor, Diana Wilson, Adam East, Cynthia East, Don Ellis, Kristi Mader and Derek Ellis; and 12 great-grandchildren, Travis Fisher, Sharisse, Whitney and Brianne Fisher, Stephany and Jennifer Caylor, Kailah and Logan Wilson, Paul and Michael Ellis, and Cory and Casey Mader.
He also is survived by a sister, Fay Owens of Tucson, Ariz.
A public viewing will be held at the Bisbee Funeral Home on Thursday, Oct. 21, 1999, from 4 to 7 p.m.
A memorial service will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church on Friday, Oct. 22, 1999, at 2 p.m. Pastor Frank Peters will officiate.

Edna Bullard
Sept. 2, 1906 - Oct. 18, 1999
Edna Bullard, 93, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Oct. 18, 1999, at the Copper Queen Community Hospital in Bisbee, Ariz., after a brief illness. She was born in Louise, Texas, on Sept. 2, 1906, to Robert and Elizabeth (Ivy) Tally.
Her stamina and testimony have always been an inspiration to her immediate family and to her church family. She was a charter member of the San Jose Bible Baptist Church and served as a deaconess in the church for many years, also with the ladies auxiliary and youth groups. As a mother and homemaker, she represented a strong, determined personality, but also was gifted with a loving compassionate demeanor.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years Frank Bullard; two daughters, Doris (Harold) Foster of Tonto Basin, Ariz.; Sylvia (Leonard) Dworshak of Phoenix; and a son, Bob (Jan) Bullard of Bisbee. She also is survived by four granddaughters, Linda Bahm of Phoenix, Renee Mace of Spokane, Wash., Doris Ann McCord of Phoenix, Barbara Mooney of Phoenix. And four grandsons, Frank Foster of Prescott, Ariz., Mike Foster of Phoenix, Robert Dworshak of Phoenix, and Daniel Matich of Phoenix. And numerous great- and great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 22, at the San Jose Bible Baptist Church, with Pastor Bob Newman officiating. Arrangements by Bisbee/San Pedro Funeral Homes.
Gertrude Parke Adair
Dec. 28, 1914 - Oct. 15, 1999
Gertrude P. Adair, widow of George Thomas Adair, passed away at the Life Care Center of Sierra Vista on Oct. 15, 1999. Trudie, as she was known to her friends and family, was born Dec. 28, 1914, in Alexandria, Va., to Phillip and Sadie (Lyle) Parke. Following the premature deaths of both her parents, she was adopted by the person she always considered her mother, Pamelia Tiffany Mullen of Middleburg, Va.
After moving to Washington, D.C., Trudie trained as a laboratory technician. In 1938, she marriage her beloved Tom, and spent most of her life as an Army wife, living in Germany and Alaska in addition to many different parts of the United States. Their marriage lasted for 55 years, until his death in 1995. She was a warm and gracious hostess, and loved nothing better than helping other people, especially if she could cook for them.
Trudie is survived by one daughter and her husband, Pamelia and Michael Steiger of Sierra Vista; four grandchildren and their spouses, Tiffany and Kyle Holt of Missouri, Kelley and Ken Knox of Maryland, Thomas and Jessie Steiger of Virginia, and Peter and Jennifer Steiger of Sierra Vista; as well as five great-grandchildren, Chelsea and Cameron Holt, Taylor Kinney, and A.J. and Daniel Knox.
Trudie will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Anyone wishing to remember her is encouraged to make a contribution in her memory toward research aimed at finding a cure for Alzheimer's disease.

Mary S. Stratton, a 23-year resident of Sierra Vista, Ariz., went to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, Oct. 19, 1999. She was born May 30, 1929, in Dansville, N.Y., to Floyd and Ethel Selbig.
Mary marriage Robert J. Stratton Jan. 22, 1955. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother. Early in her marriage life, she traveled with her husband on military duties in Oklahoma, Maryland, Italy and Germany until an accident in 1972 left her paraplegic.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother, a brother Earl Selbig and sister, Faith (Duane) Bowen. She is survived by her husband, Robert; daughter, Patricia (Rick) Cartier of Sierra Vista and Michelle Stratton of Greeley, Colo.; granddaughters Rashelle Best, Andrews Air Force Base, Md., and Alison Best of Sierra Vista; sisters, Martha (Roland) Norwood of Canaseraga, N.Y., and Helen (Floyd) MacPherson of Grifith, Ontario, Canada, and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be at Hatfield Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 21. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 22, at the First Assembly of God, 840 N. Lenzner Ave., in Sierra Vista. Burial will follow at the Miracle Valley Cemetery.

Anne L. Rustenbeck, 68, a 27-year resident of Sierra Vista, Ariz., passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 19, 1999, at the Life Care Center. She was born Feb. 26, 1931, in Youngstown, Ohio, to Irene and Louis Killmeyer.
She was a great wife and mother with strong character. Anne was also a member of St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church.
She is preceded in death by her brothers Louis and William.
She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Jim Rustenbeck of Sierra Vista; sons Edward L. Rustenbeck (Darby) of Huntley, Wyo., Robert M. Rustenbeck (Carmen) of Scott Air Force Base, Ill., and Carl J. Rustenbeck of Sierra Vista; daughters Margaret A. Rustenbeck of Tucson, Ariz., and Catherine I. Rustenbeck of Phoenix; sisters Irene May Kardas (Michael) and Jeanne Dereick, both of Youngstown; and grandchildren Robert M. Rustenbeck III, Bristin Rustenbeck, Jastny Rustenbeck and Lahren Rustenbeck.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated Monday, Oct. 25, 1999, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church, 800 Taylor Drive, in Sierra Vista, with Father Gregory Adolf as celebrant. Internment will follow at Mother Theresa Columbarium at Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic Church.

John Robert Young
Nov. 18, 1948 - Oct. 19, 1999
John Robert Young, 50, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 19, 1999, in Bisbee, Ariz.
Mr. Young was born in Westcovina, Calif., on Nov. 18, 1948, to Robert Burton Young and Fernetta Young. He was brought to Arizona 44 years ago where he was raised in the Yuma, Ariz., and Bisbee area.
John worked for USWest Communications as a technician for the last 30 years. He was an avid outdoorman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and enjoyed the mountains. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his sister Linda Mae Strong of Laguna Beach, Calif., his niece, Tracy Newhart of Laguna Beach, Calif., and his nephew, Jeff Graff of Dana Point, Calif.; also his cousins Mack and Ruth Young of Tucson, Ariz., and three great-cousins Lonnie, Melissa and Robert Young all of Tucson.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 25, 1999, at Dugan Funeral Chapel in Bisbee. Burial of Johns cremains will be held in California. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Copper Queen Hospital Development Fund, 101 Cole Ave., Bisbee AZ 85603 in Johns memory.

John B. Pope
July 24, 1911 to Oct. 5, 1999
John B. Pope, formerly of Whetstone, Ariz., passed away in Talihina, Okla., on Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Alyne, on May 6, 1993. He is survived by his daughter Barbara Farwig (William) of Schererville, Ind.; son Barry Pope (Sherry) of Tulsa, Okla.; brother Robert Rust (Betty) of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; and three grandchildren, Kedra and Angela Farwig and Chris Pope.
John was a past commander of the VFW Post No. 10342 in Huachuca City, Ariz. He then represented VFW District 7 as their commander during 1988-89.
A memorial service will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 25, at VFW Post No. 10342, 1301 Cochise Ave., in Huachuca City. Refreshments will be served after the service.

Interment will be at a later date in Bedford, Ky.
Richard F. Dow
April 11, 1912 - Oct. 20, 1999
Richard F. Dow, age 87, an 11-year resident of Sierra Vista,Ariz., passed away Wednesday, Oct. 20, 1999, at Loving Hands Care Center in Sierra Vista.
He was born April 11, 1912 in Montreal, Canada, to Walter F. and Mary J. Dow.
Mr. Dow was an avid fisherman, loved to play cards, and was a Boston Red Sox and Celtics fan. He retired as a conductor from the Boston and Maine Railroad in 1975.
In his retirement years, he volunteered his time to delivering meals to the needy in Worcester, Mass., until moving to Sierra Vista in 1988. He was also a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen and the England Social Club of Worcester, Mass.
Mr. Dow is survived by his wife of 62 years, Madeline (Granger) Dow of Sierra Vista; sons, Richard W. Dow (Gladys) of Sierra Vista, and Gerald E. Dow (Maxine) of Costa Rica; brothers, Ronald E. Dow (Mary) of Worcester, Mass., and Eugene W. Dow (Rita) of Melbourne, Fla.; and six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Visitation is scheduled for today, Sunday, Oct. 24, 1999, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Jensen's Sierra Vista Mortuary (one block east of Highway 92 at Ramsey Road). Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Monday Oct. 25, 1999, at St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church with Father Gregory Adolf celebrating. Interment will follow at Cochise Memory Gardens in Sierra Vista.
