Rev. Judith Walker
Nov. 10, 1999
Rev. Judith Walker, 60, died at her home in Bisbee, Ariz., on Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999, after a short illness. She was born in Boston and spent her life in the East before retiring and moving to Bisbee in July, 1998.
She was a 1960 graduate of the University of Kentucky with a major in French and a minor in music. In 1989, she received a masters degree from Yale Divinity School, and in 1998 was ordained as a minister in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).
From 1968 to 1998 she lived in Hiram, Ohio, where for 14 years she was the registrar at Hiram College. She also has been a French teacher, an assistant dean of students, a prison counselor and has conducted numerous classes and workshops on spirituality and woman's issues. During her last five years in Hiram, she was music director at the Hiram Christian Church.
Since moving to Bisbee, she was active in St. Johns Episcopal Church. She also started a program of visitation and music at the Long Term Care Unit of Copper Queen Community Hospital, which involved many area musicians and some Bisbee dogs.
Throughout her life, Judith was on a spiritual journey, a journey that began in the Salvation Army where her parents were officers. For years after leaving that church she dreamed of resuming the journey. After attending Yale Divinity School and being ordained, she guided many along the spiritual path, through her wisdom and her music. Yet the most important stage of her own journey was completed after learning of her grave illness. She faced the days that followed with a powerful joy. Her life in the days of her dying was a gift to all who knew and loved her.
