Helen Gregg, 86, a 55-year resident of Roswell, N.M., passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 22, 1999, at the Oklahoma Christian Home in Edmond, Okla. She was born in Roswell, N.M., Sept. 18, 1913, to Egbert and Ora Hicks.
Helen worked in the Roswell City School System as a school secretary for more than 25 years. Since 1988, Helen lived in Edmond, Okla., at the Disciples of Christ retirement center, Oklahoma Christian Home. Helen was an active member of the First Christian Church in Roswell for 55 years and a member of Eastern Star.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Dale Gregg, in 1987, and her sister, Hortense Wilder.
She is survived by her daughter, Joanna Gregg Pohly of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; two sisters-in-law, Vera Gregg Enz and Wilma Gregg Tyrrell of Edmond; five grandchildren, Glenn Pohly, Jr. (Kris) of San Francisco, Diana Pohly Carty (Joe) of Boston, Deborah Pohly Powell (Bobby) of Clovis, N.M., Gregg Pohly (Lori) of Huntsville, Ala., and Daniel Pohly (Terry) of Ogden, Utah; and 15 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 10, at the Chapel of the First Christian Church in Roswell, N.M. Interment followed at South Park Cemetery.

Mary Margaret Hostetler
Oct. 16, 1932 - Jan. 10, 2000
Mary Margaret Hostetler, 67, of Sierra Vista, Ariz., joined her Heavenly Father on Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, in Tucson, Ariz. She had been a resident for 23 years.
Mary was born Oct. 16, 1932, in Wood, Pa., to Theodore and Bertha Logan. Mary was a devoted wife and mother. She dedicated her life to the service of the Lord. She is best known for her desire to help others, her love of children and her willingness to reach out to those in need. She was a friend to all.
Mary is survived by her husband of 38 years, Ralph Kenneth Hostetler Jr.; four children, Mark (Lori) Hostetler of Sierra Vista, Kathryn Moore of Spokane, Wash., Kenneth (Deanna) Hostetler of New London, Wis., and Anita (Martin) Meyer of Neenah, Wis.; and eight grandchildren, Lisa and Hollie Hostetler, Jacob and Anthony Stearns, all of Sierra Vista, Ashley Moore and Koran Burks of Spokane, Wash., and Bradyn and Paige Hostetler of New London, Wis.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m., today, Jan. 12, at the Shiloh Christian Center. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 13, at Shiloh Christian Center, 200 North Ave., in Sierra Vista, with Dr. Joseph Tumpkin officiating. Interment will follow at Cochise Memory Gardens Cemetery on Charleston Road in Sierra Vista.
Memorial contributions may be made in Mary's honor to the Shiloh Christian Center Building Fund, 200 North Ave., Sierra Vista AZ 85635.

Howard Gustavus
March 21, 1926 - Jan. 10, 2000
Howard Gustavus, 73, a 28-year resident of Sierra Vista, Ariz., passed away in his home on Jan. 10, 2000. Howard was born on March 21, 1926, in Brooklyn, N.Y.
He attended New York City University in the early 40s and received a position as a cub reporter with the New York Daily News. In 1944, Howard joined the Merchant Marines and sailed the world for eight years. In 1952, Howard left the sea and became an electronics contractor for the government.
From 1961 until 1995, he served as a civil servant with the Department of the Army. In 1995, he ended a long career of public service, retiring from the Army Information Systems Command at Fort Huachuca.
He was a hard man to get to know and to get along with, but he taught us responsibility and the importance of family, and we will miss you Dad.
Howard is survived by his three children, Dorothy E. Blain, Kathryn A. Godden, and Christopher H. Gustavus; six grandchildren, Robin, Mandy, Kristeena, Andy, Jessica and Jodie; and two sisters, Shirley Edwards of Midland, Texas and Sandra Gustavus of Sierra Vista.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 14, at Saint Stephens Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Father Flanigans Boys Town of Omaha, Neb.
Patrick Thomas Arbenz
March 5, 1937 - Jan. 2, 2000
Pat Arbenz, 62, a 27-year resident of Sierra Vista, Ariz., passed away unexpectedly on Jan. 2, 2000, while on vacation in Budapest, Hungary.
Pat was born in Thermopolis, Wyo. on March 5, 1937, to George and Isadore Arbenz. He was raised in Bellflower, Calif., and attended schools there.
Pat joined the military in 1954 and traveled the world. He served two tours in Vietnam and received the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster as well as many other commendations for valor. While serving in Vietnam, Pat started Operation Friendship, organizing United States sports and toy companies to donate equipment to the Montagnard children of Vietnam. In 1976, he retired as the NCOIC of Libby Army Airfield on Fort Huachuca with the rank of master sergeant.
Pat served his community as well as his country. For 25 years, Pat and his wife Carole have owned and operated Mistys Gift Gallery in Sierra Vista. In 1993, he was elected to the Sierra Vista City Council and served for four years. He also served many years before and after on several commissions and committees to help make his community better.
Pat was a very caring man who gave of himself both to his family and his community. He was an avid supporter of local youth and community activities including youth sports, UofASV, The Huachuca Art Association, The Boys & Girls Club, Buena Band, The Pony Tail League, Miss Sierra Vista, Little Britches Rodeo Queen, the local fire departments annual food drive to name only a few. Pat always did so with no fanfare or recognition. He was a truly unique individual who made a difference. He will be sorely missed by all.
Pat was preceded in death by his father, George, his mother, Isadore, and brother, George Michael.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Carole; his daughter, Debra Villalva; son-in-law, Ren Villalva; granddaughter, Jennifer Villalva; brother, Richard (Lillian) Arbenz; sister-in-law, Nancy (Michael) Phelps; nephews and nieces, Richard Arbenz, Donald (Peggy) Arbenz, Melissa Alley, Michael Arbenz, Jennifer (Russell) Marlow, Mack (Randi) Belcher, and Mister Misty and Ms. Hungry.
Those who have given of themselves to others, will live forever in every single heart they have touched.
A celebration of Pats life will be held at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 18, at the Main Post Chapel on Fort Huachuca with full military honors.

Darrel Leroy Reitz

Darrel Leroy Reitz, 87, of Sierra Vista, Ariz., passed away Monday, Jan. 17, 2000. He was born July 4, 1912, in New Salem, Pa. He was a retired civil service worker.
Darrel served during World War II in the Army Air Corp. He marriage Florence W. Van Batenburg. They came to Arizona in the 1950s from Utah.
He enjoyed yard work, gardening and golf. He stopped at yard sales and was handy as a carpenter. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Survivors include his wife, Florence of Sierra Vista; son, Van Ward of California; son-in-law, Jack Reid of Utah (daughter, Carrol preceded him in death in 1992); brother, Paul of Pennsylvania; sisters, Joann of Indiana and Grace and Wilda of Pennsylvania; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 22, at the Taylor Street Chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Viewing will be one hour before the service. Interment will be in Lehi, Utah, next to his daughter. Professional service by Bisbee/San Pedro Funeral Home.
Lyle L. Schaefer
Sept. 6, 1926 to Jan. 28, 2000
Lyle L. Schaefer, age 73, a 37-year resident of Sierra Vista, Ariz., area passed away Friday, Jan. 28, 2000. He was born Sept. 6, 1926, in Breslau, Neb., to Fred and Hazel Schaefer.
Lyle was a retired civil service electrician from Fort Huachuca. He served his country in the Army during World War II. He is a lifetime member of the VFW and a longtime supporter of athletic programs in the Sierra Vista area.
Lyle was preceded in death by his wife, Jean in 1996, sons, Dale and Lyle Jr., sister, Geraldine and brother, Fred.
He is survived by his son, Neil Schaefer (Deborah) and granddaughter, Brianne of Sierra Vista; son, Mark Schaefer of Sierra Vista; sister, Joan Schaefer of Columbus, Neb.; and brothers, Bob Schaefer of Huachuca City, Ariz., and Gary Schaefer (Marilyn) of Columbus, Neb.
Memorial services will be held 4 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000, at Thunder Mountain Community Church, 598 Meyer Drive, in Sierra Vista. Pastor Randy Youngblood will officiate. A wake will be held at 5255 S. San Juan in Sierra Vista, immediately following the services.

Frances A. Lally

Frances A. Lally, 86, a long-time resident of Sierra Vista, Ariz., passed away Sunday, Jan. 30, 2000, at the Sierra Vista Regional Health Center. Frances had been fighting a battle with pneumonia for some time.
Frances was born April 16, 1913, in Oklahoma City, Okla., to Leo and Rose Ebbing. Mrs. Lally will always be remembered for her efforts and time dedicated as a school teacher and with the American Red Cross. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and will surely be missed by all.
Frances is survived by her son, Patrick Lally; daughter, Dona Rose Swenson; two sisters, Dorothy Ebbing and Genevieve Pollman; and two grandchildren, Amanda Rose Lally and Eric Chioffe.
A time of visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 2, at Hatfield Memorial Chapel. Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 3, at the Post Cemetery on Fort Huachuca.

James F. Jaggers
May 17, 1937 - Jan. 31, 2000
James F. Jaggers passed away Jan. 31, 2000, in Ocala, Fla., with family members present. He was born May 17, 1937, in Greenwood, Ind., and grew up in Columbus, Ind. He graduated from the Columbus High School in 1955.
James retired from the U.S. Army in 1976, after serving more than 20 years, at Fort Huachuca, and made his home in Sierra Vista, Ariz. He worked for Bell Tech until 1980, when he moved to Florida. He served at various locations in Europe, Turkey, the Panama Canal Zone, and various posts here in the states. He served in the Signal Corps while in the Army and received numerous awards and decorations during his tenure in the service.
He was preceded in death by his father, Earsie Jaggers, brother, Ronald Jaggers, and daughter, Teresa Jaggers. He is survived by his mother, Ollie Jaggers, Ocala, Fla.; sisters, Zeffie Bullock, Indianapolis, Ind., Donna Simm and Kathleen Jaggers, Ocala, Fla.; son, James F. Jaggers Jr. (Louanna Fay, mother), grandchildren, Patricia Clements, Kalina, James III, and Kristian Jaggers, all of Sierra Vista. He also has other relatives in Columbus, Ind.
Services will be held 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 4, at Roberts Funeral Home in Ocala, Fla., with burial to follow at Busnell National Cemetery, in Busnell, Fla., with full military honors.
