APPLEGATE, Mary A., 76, passed away peacefully on June 23, 1997. A loving and devote wife, mother and grandmother, she is survived by sons, Einer, Rex and Larry; daughter, Melinda; and five grandchildren; brother, John Lindenberger; and sister, Betty Lindberg. A native of New Mexico, she served proudly during World War II in the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC). Near the end of the war she met and marriage her husband, Roland S. Applegate. After the war, Roland and Mary settled in California. Mary worked full time for the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service while raising three children. She retired in 1979 after 30 years of government service. Mary was always proud to give extra effort in helping people attain U.S. citizenship. After her husband Roland passed away, Mary moved to the Tucson area to be near her daughter, Melinda. Mary spent the last several years of her life enjoying visits from her children and grandchildren. She loved her many pets and the animals of the Southwest. She was a strong and independent woman, who was a generous and compassionate friend to many. She amazed all with her ability to organize. Mary was an enthusiastic reader of mystery novels and a complete devotee of crossword puzzles. Mary will be laid to rest in the Applegate pioneer family cemetery in Yoncalla, Oregon. BONNER, James Arthur, 53, of Shelbyville, TN died June 19, 1997 at Bedford County General Hospital. He was born in Marshall County, TN on May 15, 1944 and a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a retired employee of Empire Pencil Company, Shelbyville, TN. Survivors include wife, Bette McDaniel Bonner, Tucson, AZ; daughters, Becky Bonner Holden and Lori K. Bonner, both of Shelbyville, TN; son, James ``Scooter'' Bonner, Shelbyville; stepdaughters, Joyce Robinson, Tucson and Kathi Crumpler, Las Vegas, NV; brothers, J.C. Bonner, Petersburg, TN and Harold Bonner, Fayetteville, TN; sisters, Mrs. Jimmy (Lee) Brannon and Jean Jones, both of Shelbyville, TN and Connie Brock, Lewisburg, TN; and one grandchild. Visitation was Thursday, June 19, 1997 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Service on Friday, June 20, 1997, 3:30 p.m. at Hillcrest Funeral Home, Shelbyville, TN, with Ronnie Adams officiating. The cemetery is Willow Mount Cemetery in Shelbyville, TN.
ENDELMAN, Ruth, was born November 7, 1908 to Harry and Grace Platt Endelman in Algonac, MI, died June 24, 1997. Her mother, father and two sisters predeceased her. Surviving are three nephews, Paul Pontius of McAllen, TX, Lewis Pontius of Moore, OK and Ronald Pontius of Brady, TX. She graduated from Battle Creek College and taught in Bad Axe, MI and Rochester, MI before coming to Tucson in 1947 where she taught at Roosevelt, Jefferson Park, Lineweaver and Rogers Elementary Schools - retiring in 1974. She spent summers at her cottage at Algonac near the St. Clair River. No Services are planned. Memorial gifts may be made to Casas Adobes Congregational Church (UCC) or any charity to help children. FOSTER, Kenneth B., 81, of Tucson, born in Newberry, MI, and a 30 year resident of Grosse Pointe Farms, MI, passed away on June 23, 1997. Survived by his wife, Lil of 36 years; daughters, Pat Teske and Kay Oberle; sons, Kenny and Greg; brother, Lou; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. FRENCH, Elizabeth C., 89, of Tucson, died June 22, 1997. Survivors include her son, Donald (Judith French of Tucson; grandchildren, Eric and Suzanne;and one nephew, John. HASKELL, Willard L., age 77, of Tucson died June 22, 1997. Survivors include wife, Elizabeth Haskell of Tucson; son, Ronald S. Haskell of Denton, TX; daughters, Dayle Antrim and Janet Crowson of Tucson; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mr. Haskell served with the USAF, WWII and was a prisoner of the Japanese for 28 months. He has resided in Tucson since 1969. Graveside services will be at Petland Memorial Park, 5720 E. HELM, Judge Lloyd C., died June 7, 1997 after a brief illness. He made his home most recently in Green Valley, AZ. Judge Helm presided over Division Two of the Cochise County Superior Court from the creation of the second division in 1965 until his retirement in 1982. Previously, Judge Helm had served as both Deputy County Attorney and County Attorney for Cochise County. Memorial Services will be held Friday, June 27 at 12:30 p.m. at the Douglas Elks Lodge BPOE 955 followed by a Gravesite Service, with interment of his ashes at 4:00 p.m. at Calvary Cemetery in Douglas. JONES, Willis M., 90, of Tucson, Arizona, passed away June 24, 1997. He was born July 23, 1906 near Waterville, Washington. He is survived by his wife, Billie McCleary Jones; a son, Dr. Robert W. Jones of Tempe, AZ; a daughter-in-law, Marcia A. Jones of Los Alamos, NM; two granddaughters, Sherryl A. Jones of Port Townsend, WA, Diane Jones Schumacher of Seattle, WA; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Victor M. Jones of Seattle, WA, Rowland M. Jones of Cashmere, WA; and three sisters, Ruth Mae Bunnell of Yakima, WA, Ida Jenkins of Issaquah, WA and Mary Johnston of Portland, OR. Willis grew up in the wheat country of Eastern Washington. He was a graduate of Linfield College in McMinnville, OR and taught school in Oregon several years but spent most of her life in Seattle, WA. Jeanne C. Nickson
76, of Tucson, passed away June 17, 1997. She is survived by her beloved grandson, Jeffrey S. Nickson; sister, Patricia C. Johnson; and brother, Bill Collins, all of Tucson. She was a school principal for Los Angeles School District where she was recognized for her outstanding service in 1979. The library at Vine Street elementary School was named after her in 1994 in commemoration of her many years of dedicated service. She was still very active after her retirement & participated at the Tucson Museum of Art and was a leader of the Literacy Adult Education Program. She published two historical novels "Tears of the Moon" and "Shadow of the Condor". It was her desire that her remains be cremated and no services be held. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. A celebration of her life will be held on her birthdate July 15th.
STONE, Ruth O., 94, passed away June 20, 1997. She was preceded in death by her two brothers and five sisters and in 1985 by her husband, John W. Stone. Survivors include her son, J.W. Stone (Frances), Tucson, AZ; grandson, Gary Stone (Nancy), Kingman, AZ; three great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren and by numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Ruth and John relocated to Arizona from Missouri in 1943. Ruth was a retired Boulder City, NV hospital chef for many years. She enjoyed as her hobbies: cake decorating, crocheting, knitting, sewing doll clothes and collecting salt and pepper shakers. As was her wish her remains will be cremated and with John's cremated remains interment will be in St. Joseph's, MO.
