He was born June 18th, 1926 in Modesto, California and grew up there on the farm that he managed from the time of his father's death until his own, and on which he taught his boys, the summer farm-hands, many life lessons. He attended Modesto Junior College, interrupted his studies to serve in the Army Air Force, and graduated from UC Berkeley cum laude before completing his Ph.D. in Plant Pathology there in 1954. Then, hired by the USDA, he moved to Tucson and subsequently transferred his work to the University of Arizona where he became a Professor. His scientific work focused on diseases of cotton, sahuaros, and crops with the potential to replace petroleum products such as jojoba and guayule. Even after retirement in 1989, with thousands of students and dozens of graduate students now spread out around the country, he continued to work on some of his projects as Professor Emeritus. Stan marriage Esther Eastvold in 1949, also a Berkeley graduate and UCSF-trained physician. They had four boys, Steven, Joseph, Eric, and Mark.
