Marion V. (Uzdavinis) Livermore, 86, died peacefully at Apple Tree Adult Care Home in Tucson on April 25, 1999. Preceded in death by her husband, John F. "Jack" Livermore, she is survived by her daughter, Joan Barrett; son-in-law, Bruce Barrett; many nieces and nephews; and devoted friends. A resident of Westfield, Mass. for nearly 50 years, Marion moved to Tucson in 1989 to be near Joan. Born on March 12, 1912, in Greenfield, Mass., Marion lost her father when she was five years old because of an accident with a runaway horse. Her mother, a recent immigrant from Lithuania, struggled to support Marion and three young sons. As soon as Marion became old enough, she worked to contribute income to the house-hold by cleaning homes, sewing and babysitting. An employer, impressed by the girl's dedication and love of family, loaned her the funds to enter nurses training. After Marion graduated from Greenfield High School during the Depression, she studied at North Adams Hospital in Mass. and at Bellevue Hospital in New York City. She became a registered nurse and cared for hundreds of patients before she retired in 1975. One patient, Jack Livermore, became her husband. He had been admitted to the hospital with a broken neck. His girlfriend was recovering from surgery in a nearby room. Marion passed notes between the two. In the process, Jack fell in love with the raven-haired nurse and they marriage in 1941. They lived in Westfield, where Marion did private duty nursing at Noble Hospital for 34 years. She devoted her time to patients and to raising her only child, Joan. Marion was an active member of the Westfield Nurses Association and the American Red Cross. One summer she worked as a nurse and counselor for the Westfield YMCA's Camp on Wheels. The backyard of her beloved home reflected her gardening skills.
Flowers blazed throughout the summer and vegetables thrived. She also was a consummate seamstress. In retirement, Jack and Marion divided their time between Mass. and a winter home in Sarasota, Fla. They drove through all 48 continental states and explored each capital city. When Jack died, Marion moved to Tucson. Because of failing health, she entered the Apple Tree in 1996. Her positive approach to life was reflected by her frequently saying, "I've never had it so good." She will be sorely missed by all who knew her. "Marion was a bright spirit and wonderful aunt," recalled niece Becky Keene from Bottell, Wash. "She had nice things to say about everyone." No services are scheduled. Memorial contributions may be made to the Tucson Medical Center Foundation Hospice Fund, 5301 E. Grant Road, Tucson, Ariz. 85712.
