Chuck Huggins
Arizona Labor Leader, dies. Long-time Arizona labor and political leader, Charles R. ("Chuck") Huggins went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 5, 2003. Huggins, 64, served for 15 years as Secretary/Treasurer of the Arizona State AFL-CIO, the highest state-level elected position in organized labor. He was a committed Christian and the salt of the earth.
Huggins was born October 20, 1938 in Chandler, Arizona. After serving in the U.S. Air Force, he returned to his hometown. An electrician, he began a twenty-five year career of involvement with Local 518 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, rising through the ranks to eventually become Business Manager. He was also active in many community and civic activities in the Globe and Gila County area. He moved his family to Phoenix in 1987 when he was elected to the state position.
A tireless fighter for social and political justice and the rights of working families, Chuck Huggins' leadership of the State AFL-CIO brought a new focus on innovation, the use of technology, and the expansion of labor's traditional role. He led the creation of the Ensuring Opportunity Coalition (EOC), an initiative to serve dislocated workers and the underemployed, regardless of union membership. After his retirement as Secretary-Treasurer in 2002, he continued to serve as Executive Director of the EOC, as well as a member of the Governor's Council for Workforce Development Policy. Chuck Huggins never wavered in his principles and never backed down from a political fight for a just cause, but he pressed his case with a smile, and reached out to anyone willing to listen. Even his political opponents never questioned his integrity. His love of his work and the family of organized labor were exceeded only by his love for his own family, and especially for his granddaughters, Hannah and Sarah. His wife, Sharon; daughter, Lisa Huggins Hubbard; son-in-law, Phillip Hubbard, and granddaughters, Hannah and Sarah survive him. He had four brothers - Ted, Bob, Jim and Lewis Huggins - and a sister, Ella Mae Brandt. Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 9, at the First Christian Church of Tempe, 2720 South Dorsey. A viewing will be held from 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Valley Cathedral Christian School, Chuck Huggins Computer Lab, 6225 N. Central Avenue, Phoenix, 85012.

BAUMANN, Mary Helen
passed on from natural causes on Friday August 1, 2003. Before moving to Tucson in the spring of 1999 where she lived with her son, Richard. Mary was a 54 year resident of Des Plaines, Illinois in suburban Chicago after being born and spending her early adulthood in New York City. In addition to her son, Mary is survived by her granddaughter, Patricia Burroughs who lives in Dublin, CA and her grandson, Andrew who is a firefighter in the Tucson area. While Mary's heart and roots remained with those she knew and loved in Des Plaines after so many years, she was appreciative of those who befriended and helped her here in Tucson. Her son and family sincerely thank all those kind and generous people in both places. Mary was happy in her final days and she passed on quickly at home with her son by her side. As Mary seemed to follow the sun in her time here on Earth, we are certain the sunset of that journey finds her embarking on a new one, happily with her Father in Heaven. In celebration of Mary's new beginning, a Funeral Mass will be held at Immaculate Heart Novitiate, 3820 N. Sabino Canyon Road at 8:00 a.m. Friday, August 15 in honor of her life and 87th birthday which coincides with the Feast of the Assumption on that day. Mary loved animals and requested any remembrances be made to the Humane Society or animal shelter of your choice.
