Jennie Doris Roberts Holderreed

There is less music in the world than a few days ago. Jennie Doris Roberts Holderreed died prematurely on August 7, 2003. She did not reach her stated goal of living, loving and having fun until age 102. She fell victim of strokes and spent the last three years as an invalid.
Jennie wants you to know the symptoms of stroke and what to do. She had sudden weakness, inability to walk and major change in vision. The Natl. Stroke says to get to the hospital. Strokes are the leading cause of creating disabled adults, are preventable and are called an unrecognized female health epidemic. It is literally vitally important to get your risk factors treated.
Jennie was an incredible person, born premature in the cold of winter in Montana on January 13, 1913 and was the 13th grandchild of Dietrich and Dorothea (Krause) Siedenberg. Her parents, Vivia Jones and Amanda (Siedenberg) Roberts put her in a shoebox behind the coal stove to keep her warm. Jennie always smiled as she finished off her story by saying, "I fooled them and lived." And thus set off a life of her very, very determined ways. She was the widow of Francis since 1994 after 52 years of marriage. She is survived by her beloved son, Glenn (Barbara) (Ca) and two grandchildren, Stephanie and Michael (WA) and a daughter, Christina (Gary) (AZ), her sister Joyce (CA) and cousins Doris (Norm) and Elsie (WI) and many friends and admirers. She graduated in the 1st class of medical technologists from the U of Minnesota in 1932 as her father wouldn't let her major in music. She worked at hospitals in Minnesota and in Montana. She was an accomplished pianist, playing until the end. She never gave up trying to get well. Music, love, eating and fun were most important aspects of her life. She was an avid golfer, and baseball and basketball sports fan. She spent years as a certified braillest, hand brailling books for the blind. Her family and friends will all miss her.
We are grateful to her last doctor and staff and for the kindness of the TMC Hospice. And to the last caretakers who improved the quality of her life. In lieu of flowers send contributions to the Northwest Interfaith Center, 2820 W. Ina Tucson, AZ, 85741 or help an older neighbor set up a walking program that helps prevent strokes. In Jennie's name, we need to help each other have healthier lives. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on August 29, 2003 at EAST LAWN MORTUARY, 5801 E Grant, followed by refreshments in celebration of her life.

Katherine (Howe) Beamer

Katherine "Kate" Beamer died September 26, 2003 in Tucson. She was born in Saginaw, MI on March 12, 1909, and spent her early years in MI. She graduated from the University of Michigan, where she studied journalism. After graduation, Kate worked for a few years as a reporter for the Blissfield Advance in Blissfield, MI. She married Miles E. Beamer in 1935. Miles died in 1984. Kate and her husband lived in Detroit, where they raised three children and she was a member of many civic organizations, incuding the League of Women Voters and the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom. She was active in the civil rights movement in Detroit, working with interracial women's groups to foster racial understanding. She also wrote a series of booklets on careers for the Detroit Public Schools.
Kate was always interested in words and writing. Her love of writing led her to write many short remembrances of her life growing up in Michigan and memoirs about her travels, poetry, and other short pieces. She enjoyed traveling and spending time with her children and grandchildren. Family members remember fondly her love of puzzles, enjoyment of a good joke, and keen interest in their activities.
She moved to Tucson with her husband in 1976. She was a charter member of the Northwest Unitarian Church, a member of the Writers Group at the Fountains, and for a time, editor of The Coins. She volunteered as a tutor for Literacy Volunteers of America as well as Meals on Wheels and sewing baby clothes for University Hospital.
She is survived by her daughters, Susan (Charles) Cnudde of Cambridge, MA, Molly (Paul) Flory of Orlando, FL; son, Daniel (Barbara) Beamer of Tucson; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The family wishes to thank the M and M Adult Care Home and Hospice for their love and care of Kate.
A memorial service will be held at the Northwest Unitarian Universalist Church, 3601 W. Cromwell at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, October 5, 2003. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Tucson Public Library, Hospice Care or charity of one's choice.
