MRS. M.A. HARLAND
January 19, 1903

The funeral of Mrs. M.A. Harland that was to have occurred
yesterday will take place at 2:30 today at the residence,
No. 621 South First Avenue. The funeral was postponed so
that the brother of Mrs. Harland could arrive from California
in time to be present.

Mrs. Harland died yesterday morning at 2:30 o'clock at her
home, No. 621 South First Avenue. She recently caught a
severe cold, resulting in pneumonia, which developed rapidly
and she was only confined to her bed a few days. Though she
had the advantage of medical skill and the attention of many
interested friends, the attack was too severe to yield to
treatment.

Mr. and Mrs. Harland came here from California about eight
years ago, since when this has been their home the greater
part of the time, though Mr. Harland in the changing course
of his business has been on the road more or less, being
for a time organizer for the United Moderns and later
engaged in mining. At present he is the commercial
representative of a Los Angles grocery house in this
territory though he was at her bedside during her
illness and death.

Beside the bereaved husband, there is one child, a boy nine
years old.

Mrs. Harland was well known in Phoenix and was of a genial
and pleasing disposition. She took an active part in many
enterprises of a social nature and was a faithful and
popular member of the United Modern lodge of this city.
She was about thirty years old and her untimely death is
mourned by all who knew her.

The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock
at the residence and will be under the auspices of Alpha
Lodge, No 57, United Moderns.

JOHN HIBBERT SR.
December 23, 1903

Mr. John Hibbert Sr., one of the oldest and most respected
citizens of Mesa, died Monday night at 8:45 p.m. at the home
of his son, Daniel Hibbert, of heart failure, super induced
by old age. Mr. Hibbert was 82 years old and had not been a
strong man but rather feeble for the last 35 years, but it
was not anticipated that his end was so near. Last Saturday
night he complained of not feeling so well but Monday had
almost entirely recovered from the attack and at 5 o'clock
he as usual insisted that he was feeling so well that he
waited as usual on his wife, who is an invalid. But about
7 o'clock he was taken worse again and gradually sank and
died without a struggle at 8:45. He was in possession of
his faculties until he breathed his last. His funeral will
be held today (Wednesday) at 1 p.m. at the tabernacle.

Mr. John Hibbert was born in Stockford England on March 4,
1822. He was converted to the Mormon faith and baptized in
August 1848 by Elder Harrop and emigrated to America the
following year, landing at New Orleans. He remained in New
Orleans plying between there and St .Louis for one and a
half years when he crossed the plains in the Ballentine Co.
driving an ox team across the plains. He settled in Salt
Lake Valley where he remained until 1855 when he was joined
and was married to Mrs. Hibbert to whom he was engaged
before he came to America. He removed to Provo, Tooele,
Richmond and Montpelier, Idaho successively, remaining in
the latter place for sixteen years prior to coming to
Arizona arriving here in the fall of 1878 where he settled
and since with his family been among our most substantial
citizens. Mr. Hibbert was a quiet modest man but one of
sterling worth and respected and beloved by all of his
many acquaintances. In the early days in Utah he was a
business partner of Wilford Woodruff who afterwards became
the president of the Mormon church.

of Mr. Spear on Thursday night. Mr. Hill was quite aged and
died of stomach troubles.

JOHN F. HILL
May 19, 1903

John F. Hill died yesterday morning at his home, No. 556
North Fifth Avenue of pneumonia. He had been sick for
about three weeks though he was confined to his bed only
a portion of that time. He was well advanced in years
and for the last few years has not been strong, having
had several sick spells, some of them of an alarming
nature. His constitution was therefore weakened making
him an easy prey to disease. His death was quite sudden
as he arose yesterday morning and dressed himself, then
lay down on the sofa and soon after was taken worse dying
in a little while.

Mr. Hill was a native of Ohio and was 69 years old. He
served his country in the Civil War and was at the time
of his death a member of the Grand Army. He lived for a
great many years in Kansas where he was successful in his
business enterprises and came to this valley some twelve
or fifteen years ago. He made various investments in city
and country real estate and in the loaning of money and
though not accounted a wealthy man was considered well
to do.

He is survived by a faithful loving wife and by a daughter
by a former marriage, she having a family of her own and
residing near this city.

The funeral will be held at the residence this afternoon
at 4 o'clock under the auspices of the Odd Fellows.

Mrs. W.W. HOGLE
February 18, 1903

Mrs. W.W. Hogle, of Evanston, Illinois died at her
residence, 323 East Fillmore Street, Wednesday afternoon.
Mrs. Hogle was the daughter of George W. Hotchkiss,
secretary of the Illinois Lumber Dealers' Association
and prominently connected for half a century with the
lumber interests of the northwest as a journalist and
statistician. Mr. Hotchkiss has been in this city for
several days and will accompany the remains of his
daughter to Evanston, a suburb of Chicago.

D.G. HOOVER
August 7, 1903

D.G. Hoover who lived with his family near the Rankin house,
west of Five Points, on the Yuma Road, died very suddenly
yesterday morning shortly after midnight. He had been
complaining for a couple of days, but was not considered
seriously ill and Wednesday evening was sitting in the yard in
front of the house. After retiring he was taken worse and
lived but a few hours. The funeral was held yesterday afternoon
at 5:30 o'clock. The family has resided here for about seven
years.

The death of Mr. Hoover was referred to yesterday in a morning
paper, but his identity was confounded with that of J.B. Hoover
who lives further down the valley and who is an old settler and
a well known farmer. The error was unfortunate, particularly
as the family of J.B. Hoover is in California spending the
summer. Mr. Hoover wired his wife yesterday of the mistake
so she would understand the situation in case she heard the
erroneous report.

An incident that gave color to the mistaken report is the fact
that several days ago Mr. Hoover was thrown from a mowing machine
and was badly shaken up. He was not seriously hurt, though at
the time it was feared he might have suffered internal injury.
