A telegram was received yesterday from Nogales announcing
the death of general George Christ, former survey-general
of this district. General Christ had been in ill health
for a long time and had been almost helpless for more than
a year. Recently his condition became more alarming and on
Monday, his son, George Christ Jr, chief clerk in the
mineral division of the surveyor general's office received
a telegram urging him to leave at once for Nogales. He
left that night.

General Christ was a native of Pennsylvania, having been
born in beaver County of that state. His parents while
he was still young, went to Iowa and in was in that state
that General Christ received his education and began
particularly active career.

After having been engaged in farming for some time he
embarked in the merchandise business and shortly after
became prominent in the political affairs of the Hawkeye
State. He was for four years chief of police of Des
Moines. Later he went to Washington as chief of a
bureau of the interior and was afterward a special
agent of the treasury department. It was in that
capacity that he first came to Arizona in 1882.

General Christ was one of the most active and consistent
republicans of the territory. He was national committeeman

WILLIAM CLAUSEN
Arizona Republican Newspaper
March 4, 1904

William Clausen, a young man who came here from Prescott
several months ago, died at the creamery Wednesday afternoon
about 5 o'clock of tuberculosis. His home was in Chicago but
on his way here he stopped in Prescott a few weeks, but found
the climate there did not agree with him so he came on to the
valley. He had been employed at the creamery in one capacity
or another ever since his arrival here, when he was taken in
the afternoon of a severe hemorrhage. It left him very weak
and he has been on a steady decline ever since.

He had no relatives of his own but a friend upon hearing of
the seriousness of his condition wrote Dr. Charles H. Jones
asking him to see that he received the best of care. Upon
his death this party in Chicago was telegraphed but up to
yesterday afternoon no reply had been received. The funeral
will be held at the creamery this afternoon.

Mr. Clausen was twenty six years old but appeared to be much
younger. During the short time that he had been in Tempe he
had made a good many friends and was well liked by all who
knew him.

Funeral of William Clausen
March 5, 1904
A strange and pathetic scene was enacted at the condensed milk
factory Friday afternoon when the last sad rites were performed
for William Clausen. At 2:30 o'clock the great engines ceased
to throb and the employees and a few neighbor women to the
number of about forty gathered in the rear of the tin can
factory where a space had been cleared and seats provided.
Rev. Drew conducted the services.

Porter Colhouer
December 20, 1904
Arizona Republican Newspaper

The funeral of Porter Colhouer, whose death occurred late
Saturday evening was held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock
from the home on Mill Avenue. The deceased was a member of
the M.E. Church and the services at the house were conducted
by the pastor of the church, Rev. J.V. Rollins. The choir
of that church sang several hymns. The funeral was in
charge of the Masonic Lodge of this place, Mr. Colhouer
being a member of that order. The pall bearers were: Grant
Jones, C.A. Stewart, T.J. Parry, Bert Wingar, Al Miller and
Carl Hayden.

Mr. Colhouer was 35 years of age, a native of Tennessee but
recently of New York where he made his home for many years.
At that place he was connected with Collier's Weekly, holding
a position on the editorial staff for some time. At the
time his health gave way he held a high position in the
business office of the New York World. For the past six
years he has been a sufferer of tuberculosis and the greater
part of that time was spent in traveling at home and abroad
in search of a climate that would help him. He came here
last spring and when hot weather set in went to Colorado
for the summer, returning here in the early fall. His
decline has been constant since that time. He did not
realize the seriousness of his condition and up to the
very last was hopeful of his recovery and was making
plans for the future.

An invalid mother and his two sisters were with him at the
last and they have the sympathy of the entire community in
their sad bereavement.
