JAMES JOHNSON
Arizona Republican Newspaper
July 29, 1904

James Johnson whose home was in Brooklyn, New York died here
Wednesday night of consumption. He leaves a wife and three
children in the east. Mr. Johnson was an expert linotype
operator and was a member of the "Big Six" Typographical
Union of New York. For many years he was an employee of
the New York Herald and was a man highly esteemed by his
associates on that paper. He came to Phoenix a few months
ago when the ravages of his disease were too far advanced
for him to longer live in the east and as long as he was
able to work he found employment on the Phoenix papers.
He was helped in both a social and material way by his
fellow craftsman here and in New York, the Herald chapel
doing much for him and taking particular interest in his
welfare. He was not only a good mechanical man but a
thorough gentleman esteemed by all who knew him. It is
likely that body will be taken east for interment.

Kellner, died in Clifton a few days ago from the effects of
a scorpion sting between the thumb and forefinger of the
left hand. Though a physician was in attendance five
minutes after the sting of the insect he could not
counteract the effect of the poison which seemed to
have taken to the heart at once through a blood vessel.
The little one was taken to Globe for interment.

of his life is well known in Phoenix, being the son of
Mr. and Mrs. E.F. Kellner and having spent some years

Eli J. Kenney
August 2, 1905
Arizona Republican Newspaper

The following clipping from a Heppner Oregon newspaper
was received at this office yesterday and contains the
details of the last illness and death of E.J. Kenney who
is well known here having spent some time in Phoenix with
his wife, their home being on Adams Street near Tenth Avenue.

Mr. Eli J.Kenney died at his father's home in this city
on Monday, July 24, 1905.

He was born in Linn County, November 8, 1852 and hence
was 52 years, 8 months and 16 days old at the time of
his death. His death was caused by consumption which
had been preying upon him for several years. It was
this that compelled him to go to Phoenix Arizona hoping
to find relief. It was too late, and a few months ago
he returned to Brownsville to spend the closing days of
his life under the parental roof.

During the last months of his life, though troubled with
an almost incessant cough, he was patient and
uncomplaining. He expressed himself as willing to
die and seemed fully resigned. His wife, who had
been constantly at his bedside, ministering with
tender hands, together with his aged father, Elias
Kenney, four brothers and three sisters mourn his
comparatively untimely going. He was an honored
member of the Elks at Heppner whose members deplore
his going, and join with many friends in extending
sympathy to the bereaved relatives.

The funeral was held at the Kenney residence on Tuesday,
conducted by Rev. A.J. Hollingsworth. Interment was
made in the Masonic cemetery.

A.F.C. KIRCHOFF
Arizona Republican Newspaper
January 15, 1904

A.F.C. Kirchoff was suddenly stricken with an illness in
his place of business on Washington Street between First
and Second Avenues shortly after eight o'clock last night,
that proved fatal before 11 o'clock.

The shock was of the nature of apoplexy for he fell to the
floor without warning and immediately became unconscious.
Those who chanced to be present summoned a physician at once
and restoratives were administered without material effect.
As soon as possible he was removed to his residence, at the
corner of Adams and Seventh Streets, and other physicians
were summoned in consultation but nothing could be done to
ward off the death summons and he passed away without
regaining consciousness.

Mr. Kirchoff was about 52 years of age and was a native of
Germany although he had lived in America a great many years
and has been in this city since sometime in the nineties.
Previous to that he lived in Cochise County, having returned
his naturalization papers there in 1890. When he first came
to Phoenix he was employed by Goldman and Company in a
liquor store they conducted at that time and later on he
went into business on his own account having run a liquor
house for several years past. He also built the family
residence at Adams and Seventh Streets, one of the best
appointed and most comfortable homes in the city. His
only relatives in this part of the country are a wife
and three children. No funeral arrangements have as yet
been made.

MRS. DANIEL KLOSS
Arizona Republican Newspaper
November 7, 1904

All Tempe was shocked and deeply grieved yesterday upon
hearing of the death of Mrs. Daniel Kloss, which occurred
at 5 o'clock that morning. The end was so very sudden
and unexpected that it came as a blow not only to the
members of her family, but to every one who kew her.
In fact, not a great many of them knew that she was ill.
It was mentioned erronously in this paper a few days ago
that she was very much better. That was not the case,
for when she arrived here that morning her temperature
was 104. She was taken sick in Kansas a little over
two weeks ago but the first of last week felt well
enough to attempt the trip home. She was sick all
the way en route but when she reached home she did
not consider herself in danger nor did any of her
friends. Sunday while the others were at church
she got up and when they returned she was taken
with a severe chill. She grew no better and what
was already nearly pneumonia, rapidly developed
into it. Ealry yesterday morning her lungs became
congested and while everything was done her life
could not be saved.

The funeral services will be held this afternoon at the
Congregational Church at 2 o'clock. Rev. Drew will
officiate and the interment will be made in Double Butte
Cemetery.

Obit of Mrs. Kloss
by an intimate friend, Mrs. J.J. Wingar
November 10, 1904

Mrs. Rebecca Kloss, beloved wife of Daniel Kloss, D.D. of
Tempe, was born in Juniata, Pennsylvania October 25, 1835.
Mrs. Kloss was married to Dr. Kloss May 24, 1860. She
became the mother of five children, three of whom preceded
her to the celestial world. Mary, wife of Rev. Todd, died
ten years ago. The two suviving children are Charles
Kloss, pastor of Central Congregational Church,
Philadelphia and Mrs. P.P. Daggs of Tempe. Her
liberal education, conversion and union with the
church at the early age of sixteen made her a fit
helper for her husband with whom she was associated
in church work for seventeen years in Pennsylvania
and fourteen years in Kansas.

Removing from the east to Tempe, Mrs. Kloss joined with her
husband in every good work until she was summoned to her
reward. During all her adult career she was associated
with Sunday School work, generally as teacher of primary
classes, claiming that it was a special privilege to lay
in the child mind the foundation of true Christian character.

The comunity was shocked with the news of the sudden death
of Mrs. Kloss. Those who were associated with her in the
Congregational Church and the W.C.T.U. especially mourn her
loss. Deceased left in June for the east to visit relatives
and friends in Martha's Vineyard, Boston, Philadelphia and
Kansas returning by way of St. Louis. Repeated heavy colds,
contracted while on the homeward journey, finally resulted
in death. Mrs. Kloss arrived in Tempe Saturday morning,
suffered a severe chill Sunday and on Monday November 7
at 5 o'clock passed away.
