March 16, 1909

GEORGE DOMAN
May 4, 1909

"Boy's I'm going to shuffle off," said George Doman, from Des
Moines Iowa to his three partners who were looking over mining
properties at Bouse, Saturday. His companions laughed at him and
thought little more about his words.

Sunday morning, Doman went to the Eddy Barber Shop, took a bath,
put on a white shirt, dressed himself all in black and the pressed
the muzzle of a revolver to his heart and pulled the trigger.

A few moments before the shot rang out in the barber shop, Doman
had called out from the bath, asking that a razor be sent in.
As all the razors in the shop were in use at the time, the
request was not complied with.

Several of Doman's companions were in the shop at the time and
rushed into the bathroom at the report, as did everyone else
who was within hearing distance. They found Doman lying on the
floor. The man whom he had told the day before that he was
going to "shuffle off" raised him from the floor and said,
"well, you did it, all right." "Yes, I did," replied Doman
feebly. A moment later he said, "Send me back home," and
died.

Doman was one of four men who had been working at Swansea on the
Clara Mines. It is said that the men were laid off and then went
to Bouse to see if they could lease some of the Little Butte
property. They were taken over the Little Butte claims on
Saturday by J.E. Meyer, the president of the company. When
they were about to return to Bouse, Doman complained of feeling
ill. Meyer suggested that they all ride back but Doman said he
would rather walk.

In the evening he telegraphed to his wife, who lives in Des
Moines and asked for $500, for the purpose of leasing a claim.
No answer had been received by Sunday night. Another telegram
was sent to her immediately after Doman shot himself. No answer
has been received.

Doman was a man of about thirty five and was well dressed and
well mannered. There was no evidence to suggest that he had been
drinking, though some of his actions in Bouse were peculiar. It
is said that the night before he killed himself he stopped a
citizen in the street and asked if there were any policemen in
town as wanted to give himself up. He did not say why he wished
to be placed under arrest.

One of the peculiar features of the suicide is that there was not
a single doctor in the town, that the coroner could not be reached
by wire, and there were no public officials to take charge of the
body. In addition, it was the first death that has occurred in
the new mining town and if Doman is buried there, his will be
the first grave.

The only doctor that has lived at Bouse is Dr. Robert A. MacAdory,
who two weeks ago, removed to Swansea to act as company physician
for the Clara Consolidated. The body was taken in charge by
Deputy Sheriff Despain who happened to be in Bouse. As there
is no undertaker in town the body was temporarily placed under
the water tank.

A.L. DORAN
March 5, 1909

A.L. Doran died at his home, 702 North Fourth Street at 6 o'clock
Wednesday evening of Bright's disease after an acute illness of
two or three weeks, though he has been in poor health the greater
part of the winter. He is survived by his wife and a young son,
Joseph and a brother, S.W. Doran who arrived from Ohio since he
became seriously ill.

The funeral will be held Saturday afternoon at 2:30 in the
parlors of Mohn and Driscoll, D.r J.A. Geissinger officiating.
The body will be taken back to VanWest Ohio for interment a
little later.

Mr. Doran was about 60 years old and was a native of Ohio in
which state he spent most of his life until four or five years
ago, when he came to Arizona making Phoenix his home. Since
coming here he has been one of the most enthusiastic citizens
of the town. He was greatly impressed with the advantages of
life in this valley. There were quite a number here also who
came from the same section of the country, Van West and Celina,
Ohio who knew Mr. Doran or who knew of him many years ago. Many
years ago Mr. Doran was engaged in the conduct of a stave making
plant. H.C. Yaeger who has lived here many years, had business
dealings with him years and years ago when Mr. Yaeger was
interested in the milling business in Illinois. Mr. Geissinger
remembers that as a boy he was once engaged in hauling bolts
to the stave mill though he did not know until recently that
it was Mr. Doran's establishments.

Feb. 12, 1909

George Dugger, passed away very suddenly Wednesday evening from
the effects of Bright's Disease. The young man had been employed
in the Parlor Saloon for several months.

About ten days ago he quit work, there going to the ranch of Dan
Kleuman for a rest. The change did not prove as beneficial as he
had hoped it would, so that Wednesday afternoon he came back to
town and was removed to his room, this was about 3:30 from that
time he continued to grow steadily worse until 7 o'clock when he
died.
