MRS. LAURA HERDER
April 29, 1909

Mrs. Laura Herder died Monday, April 26 at 1150 East Washington
Street at 4pm of tuberculosis. She came here from Los Angeles
about five weeks ago hoping to receive climatic benefits. She
grew constantly worse and her husband, being notified, came as
soon as possible, arriving only about ten minutes before she
died. Mrs. Herder was a refined and cultured woman and was
loved by all who knew her. Though she was ill during her entire
residence here she made a number of friends who sincerely mourn
her death. The funeral will be held this Thursday morning at
10 o'clock in the parlors of Mohn and Driscoll.

THOMAS HESLIP
Mrs. Thomas Heslip
August 18, 1909

Goldfield--Thomas Heslip, the mining engineer whose wife was
shot dead by Patrick Casey last night, committed suicide this
afternoon by taking cyanide. He declared his determination to
join his wife and he died almost instantly after swallowing the
drug.

Mrs. Frank Mann who was shot in the groin by Casey at the time
he killed Mrs. Heslip, is in a precarious condition. Casey is
being strongly guarded at the jail to prevent lynching. He was
intoxicated when he committed the crime which apparently was
without motive. Heslip and his wife formerly lived in Cripple
Creek, Colorado.

RUPERT HIGHTOWER
April 3, 1909

Rupert Hightower of Yuma, died this morning at 1:55 o'clock at
the sisters hospital, having never regained consciousness since
being found in his room on Wednesday in convulsions. He was a
member of the late legislature from Yuma County and was highly
regarded by the Yuma people. There is something most unusual
and most pitiful in connection with the case for his death was
due in great measure to an overindulgence to liquor, a habit to
which he had not been greatly addicted until recently. It is
said that he was known as a very temperate young man, a hard
working carpenter and contractor and highly esteemed. Even
during the campaign last fall, he was known to indulge but
little in intoxicants. However, as soon as he was elected he
began to drink to excess and did so until thrown into the
state of collapse in which he was found the other day.

He has lived on the frontier for years, coming to this country
from Oklahoma. It was not the temptations of a new country that
seemed to allure him, for he had withstood them without
weakening it would appear, until recently, and since then he
seemed purposely trying to throw himself away. His brother
from Yuma arrived yesterday. No arrangements have yet been
made for the funeral. The deceased was about 28 or 30 years
old.

MRS. HILL
February 4, 1909

The funeral of Engineer Louis C. Hill's mother was held yesterday
in Detroit, Mich. Mr. Hill went to Detroit about a week ago when
he received news of his mother's illness. She died last Sunday at
the age of 70 years. Mr. Hill will go to Washington before his
return to Phoenix and confer with the secretary of the Interior
and the reclamation officials.

HARRY R. HILLIKER
August 10, 1909

After a struggle of twenty five days against the last attack
of tubuculosis, Harry R. Hilliker, an electrical engineer of
prominence who came to Phoenix from New York City with his
family on July 15 died at Prescott yesterday morning.

Although the disease had made considerable inroad on his
health in New York, making it necessary for him to quit work
and come west, it was not thought that he was in as bad a
condition as he was. In fact, ever since his arrival in
Arizona he had seemed to improve and his last attack came
suddenly, and no doubt was brought on by a slight cold, due
from a change of the altitude between Phoenix and Prescott.

It was not learned yesterday afternoon whether the remains
would be interred in Phoenix or back at the old home in New
York.

NAT HILLMAN
April 16, 1909

A letter was received here yesterday morning from Miss Louise
Hillman, from Knightsville, Indiana, announcing the death of
her brother, Nat Hillman, on the morning of the 11th. It will
be remembered that Mr. Hillman, accompanied by his sister left
here for home several weeks ago. At that time his health was
very poor and it was feared that he might not survive the
journey. He arrived home safely however and for a little
time showed signs of improvement. It was only temporary,
though, and he began failing again shortly. His sister writes
that he was conscious up to the moment of his death and
suffered terribly toward the end. He was happy, though, in
being at home. The funeral services were held on Tuesday
afternoon.

Mr. Hillman spent last winter in Tempe. He was a young man of
many accomplishments and while here made many friends who will
regret to learn of his death. He came here last fall and stayed
with the Rohrigs, later coming to town. He was joined by his
sister shortly after the holidays and she remained here with
him until their leaving about a month ago.

MISS IRENE HIMEBAUGH
April 4, 1909

Miss Irene Himebaugh of Colorado Springs died Friday evening
at 6:30 at her temporary home on north Second avenue. Her
death will come as a surprise to many who knew her, for
though she came here some time ago for her health she was
apparently improving rapidly until Thursday, when she was
seized with hemorrhages. She is the daughter of one of the
leading citizens of Colorado Springs, a gentleman well known
all over Colorado. A sister was with her in her last hours.
The body will be taken to Colorado Springs for interment
leaving here Monday morning.

PETER HODGES
June 19, 1909

It is reported that Peter Hodges, a member of one of the best
known families of Yuma was killed yesterday near Ligurta, in
the Fortuna Mountains. The story of the tragedy reached Yuma
through Manuel Arviso.

According to Arviso, Hodges, himself and a second Mexican named
Francisco Marques, started four days ago on a prospecting trip.
Marques claimed he knew a mine of exceeding richness.

Marques went to hunt mountain sheep, Arviso says, he and Hodges
hearing shots fired went to aid Marques. When they appeared in
the mountains, Marques opened fire on them, killing Hodges and
wounding Arviso.

Hodges was a son-in-law of captain Isaac Polhamus and was
connected with a number of old and prominent families in
this section. Marques is supposed to have fled to Mexico.

June 20, 1909

The first of numerous parties from the spot in the Fortuna
range, where Peter Hodges lost his life on Thursday at the
hand of Francisco Marquez, has returned. The body of Hodges
followed them into town tonight on the 6:50 train accompanied
by George Hodges and three others.

A fresh horseback party of six, including two under sheriffs
and Ben Hartley, a stepson of the murderer, who has been
induced to disclose what he knows of Marquez's plans, started
up the Gila River today. It is firmly believed that Marquez
will be taken tonight near his home, where he is supposed to
have been concealed since morning. Marquez, it is thought,
will not be taken without a struggle. Excitement runs high
in Yuma and threats of summary justice to the offender
should he be brought in alive, have been current.

October 10, 1909

Yuma--after deliberating forty five minutes, the jury in the
case of Francisco Marquez, charged with the murder of Peter
Hodges last June, brought in a verdict of murder in the first
degree tonight, fixing the penalty of death. Marquez will be
sentenced on Monday.

No criminal case in Yuma County has excited such an interest
as that of Marquez, whose trial has been in progress all week.

Hodges was shot in a lonely pass in the Fortuna Mountains,
whither the men had gone on a prospecting trip. Following
the discovery of the crime, 200 armed men beat the brush in
the Gila River bottom five nights and days before Marquez
returned.
