J.L. HOLLINGER
December 7, 1909

Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock the funeral of J.L. Hollinger
was held from the D.M. Huston residence in Mesa, the Rev. A.L.
Hawley officiating. The interment was in Mesa Cemetery. S.H.
Hollinger, a brother, arrived in the morning from San Bernardino
in time for the funeral ceremonies.

J.L. Hollinger was born in Stark, Ohio, forty five years ago
and lived there during his early youth. His brothers and sisters
are all still there with the exception of the California brother
and one married sister in Kansas. For twenty one years Mr.
Hollinger was connected with the Newton Lumber Company in
Pueblo, Colorado and was one of their trusted and valued
employees. He was a close friend of A.A. Jones of Mesa and
an intimate friend of the A.R. Jones family. He was of a
lovable nature and was the sort of man of whom everyone spoke
well.

He had been in Mesa some ten months and lived with the D.M.
Huston family, being considered one of them so well beloved
was he and his death, which was not unexpected will prove a
severe death to them. He was of sterling character and an
upright business man. At the consultation of physicians it
was determined that the cause of his death was cancer of the
stomach.

at Visalia, on the afternoon of the 12th. The funeral will be
held today and interment will be made at Visalia.

The last of the week Mr. .Houston had a wire advising him of
the serious illness of his brother but no particulars were
given and even yet, it has not been learned just what caused
his death. The deceased was well known all over Arizona.
In the early days he made Tempe his home for a number of
years, holding at one time considerable property south of
town. He also taught school for a time on the north side
of the river and since leaving Arizona has been engaged in
the practice of law at Visalia. He was fifty three years
of age and unmarried.

MRS. HUNT
July 5, 1909

The interesting case of Fannie King, an Apache who killed
Mrs. Hunt, a sister of her own tribe, resulted in her
conviction on the charge of manslaughter at Globe. Because
of previous trouble Fannie King stabbed Mrs. Hunt in a
quarrel. Fannie King did not realize the awfulness of her
crime, even after hearing the verdict merely continuing her
chatter with her sisters.

May 25, 1909

The funeral of Rev. J.B. Hutton, whose death at his home on the
Tempe Road was announced by the Republican yesterday morning
will take place this afternoon at half past two o'clock from
the Baptist Church. Mr. Hutton came to the valley about six

was not actively engaged in his profession here.

S.S. JACK
August 24, 1909

Last Tuesday morning a telegram came to E.E. Jack, stating that
his father, S.S. Jack had died suddenly of heart failure in
Halifax, Nova Scotia. About a month ago Mr. Jack left his home
in Decatur Illinois for a pleasure trip to northern Canada,
visiting Niagara Falls, Toronto, Quebec, Montreal and several
other cities en route, Halifax being the terminal point and
he was just starting home when without an hour's illness he
was suddenly stricken.

While he counted himself a resident of Decatur, he has been a
winter resident of the Salt River Valley for the past ten years,
and interested in Arizona for twice that number of years, making
his first visit to Arizona and the Salt River Valley when the
first attempt was made to build the Wolfley Dam at Gila Bend.
He holds some property in the valley and has always been
interested in its development.

He was a man of sterling worth and won the respect and
admiration of all with whom he came in contact. Besides a
host of friends he has two sons in Arizona, Edgar E., a well
known rancher of the valley and Francis J. at one time a
resident of Flagstaff but now in the employ of the A&C
Company at Bisbee. Both left immediately for Decatur,
upon receiving the sad news.

He also has two other sons in Decatur, T.B. Jack of the law
firm of Jack and Deck who was with his father at the time of
his death and Dr. Cecil Jack, one of the leading physicians
of that city.

July 28, 1909

The funeral of Scott Jamieson will be held at the undertaking
parlors of George F. Merryman Friday afternoon, July 20 at 2:30
o'clock.

Scott Jamieson was born at Mankato, Minn. on January 1, 1878
and died at Phoenix on July 24, 1909. He was a graduate of
the high school of Mankato and of the law department of the
university of his native state. Shortly after his graduation
he was seized with tuberculosis and he came to Phoenix about
five years ago, hoping the climate would prove beneficial to
him. Here he opened an office and practiced his profession.
Two years ago as he did not seem to improve, his parents moved
here to afford him a home and to be with him. The dread
destroyer was at last victor. Before passing away he gave
his friends to understand that his faith was in Jesus and
they have laid his body away in the hope of a glorious
resurrection. His friend, Miss Pearl Boehmer of Mankato,
Minn. came to attend the last sad rites. Besides his
parents he leaves two brothers and one sister.

CONNIE JERMAN
November 17, 1909

Connie Jerman, a sixteen year old girl, committed suicide by
shooting yesterday morning at the home of her mother, Mrs.
Taylor, living a short distance this side of Six Points. The
indications are that the act was committed in a fit of spite.
The girl was handsome and was generally liked but she was
headstrong and her mother had a great deal of trouble with
her about young men companions.

Yesterday morning two young men passed the house while hunting
for tarantulas. They asked her to accompany them and she did
so. On her return shortly before 11 o'clock her mother scolded
her and a bitter quarrel ensued. At last the mother said that
unless her daughter ceased talking she would call a neighbor
and at the same time started toward the door. The daughter
replied that if the neighbor were called she would kill
herself.

The episode took place in the kitchen and as soon as the mother
had gone out she heard the report of a revolver. She returned
and found her daughter lying on the floor. The clothing had
been burned by the flame from the weapon. The ball had passed
through the left lung, emerging below the left shoulder blade.

Dr. Tafel was summoned and arrived in a very short time. The
girl had not yet recovered consciousness. When she did she
rejected all efforts to aid her and pleaded to be left to die.

She was taken to Sisters Hospital where she lingered until five
o'clock yesterday afternoon. Dr. Tafel frequently asked her
in the course of the afternoon whey she had shot herself. Her
only reply was "Because I said I would."

There is some doubt whether she actually meant to inflict a
fatal wound but it is suspected that she intended to carry
out her threat to the extent of only discharging the weapon
and perhaps inflicting only a trifling wound.

Coroner Johnstone had been notified of the affair in the
morning but at that time it was understood that the shooting
had been accidental and would probably not be fatal. As soon
as the girl was dead, he summoned a jury.
