The inquest
April 16, 1901

The inquest of Mrs. Robin Icke was continued yesterday by
Justice Burnett until 9:30 this morning. An autopsy,
conducted yesterday afternoon by Dr. Robbins, Mrs. Icke's
physician and Dr. Hughes. In his testimony Dr. Robbins
said that he was first called to see Mrs. Icke last Monday.
She was suffering from pneumonia with typhoid symptoms. She
was bright and cheerful and the typhoid symptoms seemed to
have disappeared by Wednesday. On Thursday she was much
worse. The doctor learned that the medicine he had left
had been thrown away and that the patient had been forced
to take a large dose of salts. While the purgative had
seriously affected her ,the doctor believed that she might
have survived but she appeared to have collapsed under a
nervous shock, the cause of which he not pretend to know.

The great collection of jewelry belonging to the dead woman
was placed by Justice Burnett yesterday morning in a safety
deposit vault of the Phoenix National Bank. It was an
embarrassing thing to have around. The justice's safe
was full and the silverware was piled up outside. The
value of the jewelry is estimated to worth from $5000 to
15,000.

CORPORAL IRISH
December 22, 1901

A telegram was received here yesterday by the United
States Marshal McCord with the information that Corporal
Irish, an Indian scout attached to the Apache Indian agency
at San Carlos, has been murdered, Friday about twelve miles
from Willcox. A native scout bearing the poetical name of
Haskl-distal, was in company with the dead man when last
seen and the fact that his whereabouts are now unknown is
taken as very conclusive evidence that the Indian scout
is the murderer. It is supposed that Haskl-distal will
seek a refuge among his tribesmen on the reservation and
endeavor to conceal his identity. Other scouts are on
his trail and deputy marshals have left for the scene of
the crime. There are no advices as to whether the
murdered man and the scout quarreled or whether it
was a plain cold blooded murder.

January 19, 1902
Arizona Republican Newspaper

Within the last few days two bad men have been apprehended
in eastern Arizona and two murders that were more or less
mysteriously accomplished are about to be explained and
the guilty men brought to justice.

The first of these is the Apache Indian who killed Corporal
Irish, about twelve miles from Wilcox on the Fort Grant
Road on December 20. It is reported that he has been
captured at San Carlos and will be turned over to the
civil authorities for trial. Both Corporal Irish and
his slayer were scouts and so far as was previously
known were on friendly terms. Why the Indian turned
murderer probably no one but himself knows and he has not
said.

SARAH MELISSA JOHNSON
October 6, 1901

Sarah Melissa Johnson died this morning October 4th at
5 minutes after 4 o'clock. Surrounding her bedside were
six of the eleven children she had brought into the world.
For the past two days it was known that the end was near,
for blood poisoning had set in, all hope was gone for her
recovery and her loving family surrounded her couch
administering to her slightest wish and doing all in
their power for her comfort. She had been troubled
with a complication of troubles for the past two years.

Sarah Melissa Holman was born in the 18th of October 1838.
While a young girl her parents moved to Utah, crossing the
plains in ox teams and settled in southern Utah where she
married and remained until 1881 when her family moved to
Tempe Ariz. and a few years later to Mesa, where she has
continuously resided since.

"Aunt Melissa" as she was lovingly called by everybody of
her acquaintance, has been a prominent figure in the church
societies and as a nurse has ministered continuously in the
families of her relatives and friends here. She raised
eleven children, all of whom survive her and nine of whom
attended her funeral.

The funeral was conducted by Bishop James M. Horne in the
Tabernacle, where a large crowd had assembled to show their
last tribute of respect to one dearly beloved by all.

CHARLIE JONES
May 2, 1901

The following from the Cochise Review is reprinted for the
reason that Mr. and Mrs. J.N. Jones, father and mother of
the young man referred to are well known in Phoenix:

"The sad intelligence of the untimely death of Charles Jones
was received on Wednesday by a telegram to J.N. Jones
notifying him that his son had been killed on Monday night
by falling into the mixing pan.

From parties arriving from Nacosari on Thursday we learn
the following particulars: On Monday night, April 21,
Jones went to work as usual at 6 o'clock, taking his
place at the mixing pan, where the clay and silica are
mixed for the lining of the converters, it being the
duty of the man in charge to shovel into the pans the
proportion of silica and clay, a large roller moving
inside the pan. At some time near midnight, Jones in
some unaccountable manner, fell into the pan and was
crushed to death by the roller. The exact time of the
accident was not known as Jones was at one end of the
smelter working by himself and his body was not found
until some time after. The remains were taken in
charge of by the company and were interred the following
day, the body being followed to its last resting place
by the many employees of the company."

Charley Jones was the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. J.N. Jones
of our city and was raised here since his early childhood.
He was married about two years ago and leaves a wife to
mourn his loss. She is at present in the east on a visit
to her parents.
