Richard SLOAN
April 2, 1902
Arizona Republican Newspaper

Prescott -- Richard Sloan, the nine year old son of
Judge and Mrs. R.E. Sloan died very suddenly this
morning of croup. He was in his usual health and was
at school yesterday and was taken during the night
with an attack of croup, which resulted fatally
about eight o'clock this morning.

The boy was exceptionally bright for one of his
years and was a universal favorite with all who
knew him. His death, coming as it did with such
suddenness is a terrible blow to his parents who
fairly idolized their son. Judge Sloan was absent
in Kingman holding court and will arrive home tonight.

Mrs. Francisco C. SOTELO
October 28, 1902
Arizona Republican Newspaper

Mrs. Francisco C. Sotelo died Sunday evening at 428 South
Second Street of dropsy, and her funeral at the Catholic
Church was held yesterday afternoon and was largely attended
by friends and old settlers. She was high respected and was
one of the oldest residents of this city. She came to
Arizona in 1866 before Phoenix was surveyed or a house
built on the townsite.

A.J. SPENCER
October 30, 1902
Arizona Republican Newspaper

A letter received at this office from Judge Luther
Kaltenbach of Gila Bend, describes the sudden death
of A.J. Spencer, an old resident of that place. Mr.
Spencer had gone in the company of a man from Los
Angeles to look at the Volcano mine. On their return
to the Gila River, Mr. Spencer was taken suddenly sick
and died. Mr. Spencer had lived in this county for
several years and at one time resided in Phoenix. He
was highly respected by all who knew him. He was
seventy nine years of age and leaves an aged wife,
many children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
The funeral took place at Gila Bend yesterday.

ISAAC STEELE
August 26, 1902

News was received here last night from Lehi that Isaac
Steele was killed some time yesterday while working in a
well by the caving in of the brick curbing. Details were
meager but it was learned that he was working below and
his brother, Sam Steele, was at the windlass. There was a
slight cave-in, which covered the young man's feet with
debris and held him prisoner. He yelled for help and his
brother, unable to do anything started at once for
assistance. When he returned with others it was seen
that a second cave-in had occurred for Mr. Steele was
completely covered up.

The well was about thirty feet deep and looked like a
death trap to the rescuers. Few were willing to risk
their lives to dig out a man already supposed to be
dead. Mr. Bud Gilbert, however, proved the hero of
the hour by offering to take the chance, so he was
lowered into the well and dug out the remains of the
unfortunate one without help. The brother was doing
all he could to help but his frame of mind could be
of little assistance. The dead man was really only a
boy for he was but seventeen years old.

Joseph J. STEIN
April 3, 1902
Arizona Republican Newspaper

Joseph J. Stein, who lived in Yuma from 1879 to 1892,
died recently in Los Angeles. He was born in
New Orleans in 1854 and served at different times

newspaper work on the Times and Herald.

Captain J.F. SULLIVAN
Captain Flores
November 18, 1902
Arizona Republican Newspaper

Tucson -- A story has just been brought here by George F.
Joseph of the Santa Maria gold mining company in Mexico
telling of the murder by Yaquis of another mining man.
Joseph Haynes, accompanied by a number of rulaes who went
to Yaqui Grande to bring in the body of Captain J.F.
Sullivan, the murdered American engineer, and found
the dead body of Captain Flores, a mine owner and
operator in the vicinity of San Maria. He, like
Sullivan had been attacked by the Yaquis who killed
him and his Mexican servants. It is said that the bodies
of the victims were badly mutilated. General Torres left
Hermosillo for the scene of the recent murders to see what
can be done with the forces at hand. Various roads of
Sonora are said to be infested with Yaquis who shoot
Mexicans at every opportunity.

Mrs. JOHN H. SULLIVAN
April 5, 1902
Arizona Republican Newspaper

Mrs. John H. Sullivan died yesterday at her home,
No. 557 North Fifth Avenue, after an illness of
little less than a week. Mrs. Sullivan had always
been in good health till a week ago last night, when
she was seized with an affection which developed into
peritonitis. Her condition never improved and at
length septic poisoning set in. She was 25 years
of age.

Her husband will leave tonight with the remains for
Tiffin, Ohio, the home of Mrs. Sullivan's parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Edward Carr.

Beside a grief stricken husband there is left an
18 month old girl baby. Mr. and Mrs. Sullivan
came to Phoenix about two years ago and since
then they have both made many friends. The dead
woman was a peculiarly lovable woman and Mr.
Sullivan is a most pleasant gentleman with whom
the community sympathizes not only on account of
the greatness of his loss but also on account of
the suddenness of it.

When he was buried his wife he will return to Phoenix
and make it his home.

Roy A. SULLIVAN
March 11, 1902
Arizona Republican Newspaper

Roy A. Sullivan of Charleston WV died at the Sisters
Hospital at 10 p.m. Sunday of consumption. Mr. Sullivan
was a son of D.A. Sullivan, ex-secretary of agriculture
for West Virginia and was a nephew of Capt. A.G. Scott
of No. 800 South First Avenue of this city.

The funeral of Roy A. Sullivan will be held this afternoon
at 2 o'clock at the undertaking parlors of A.J. Bradley.
The Knights of Pythias will have charge of the funeral and
will attend in a body.

Epifanio TELLES
May 19, 1902
Arizona Republican Newspaper

On Sunday last, about 12 o'clock, Epifanio Telles, a
Mexican rancher and wood hauler was shot and killed near
the rock quarry, about twelve miles east of Douglas, says
the International. The fatal shot was fired either by
W.H. Taylor or John Bowman, but owing to the number of
men and the number of shots fired it is impossible to
tell which one is responsible for the killing. The dead
man was hit but once, the ball entering his left side
below the armpit, passing entirely through the body and
the right arm above the elbow, the bullet in its passage
cutting off the lower part of the heart and passing
through the main organs of the body.

Epifanio Telles, the dead man was a citizen of the United
States, born in San Antonio, Texas and was about 50 years
of age.

The killing was caused by a dispute over the ownership of
a spring. According to the testimony before the coroner's
jury, W.H. Taylor claimed ownership of the spring by
purchase from George Bloodshaw, or Bledsoe, who had
located the ground as a mining claim and he said he
held a bill of sale from Bloodshaw.

Pablo Telles, the son of the dead man testified that his
father had filed on the land as a homestead about a month
ago and was living there in a tent, and a man named Gomez
in a small house near by.

The verdict of the coroner's jury was that the deceased,
Epifanio Telles, came to his death from a rifle shot from
the hands of W.H. Taylor or John Bowman on May 11, 1902
near the rock quarry, twelve miles from Douglas and the
shooting was done in self defense.
