J.B. BURTON
January 29, 1894

J.B. Burton died at Mesa Sunday night from a dose of laudanum
taken with suicidal intent. Burton was a man of forty five and
a civil engineer by profession. He came here from Colorado last
summer and was engaged in the Hudson Irrigation Company's
survey. Since work on that enterprise has been suspended, he
has been out of employment. The cause of suicide is believed
to be insanity induced by hard drinking.

He was in Phoenix a few days ago and his appearance was
remarked by persons who had formerly known him and who expressed
a belief that he was then verging on insanity.

The fatal potion was taken on Sunday morning in the St. Louis
Beer Hall and his condition was soon after discovered.

Burton was a native of Richmond Virginia but has lived in the
west for several years. He is remembered by those who knew
him a dozen years ago as a gentleman of refinement and
education. He is believed to have been unmarried and it not
known that he has any relatives living in the east.

During a residence of less than a year in Phoenix the lovable
manner of Mrs. Casterline attracted to her scores of warm
friends who now earnestly sympathize with the bereaved and
heartbroken husband.

MAN HE CHUNG
august 26, 1894

Sam Hang Shung, a life man at Yuma was pardoned yesterday by
Governor Hughes. The prisoner was sentenced from Cochise
county on Feb. 20 for the murder of Man He Chung. The
application for the pardon contains an interesting story.

The prisoner and the murdered man were partners in a market
gardening business near Tombstone. Man Hee Chung attended
to the raising of vegetables and the prisoner peddled them
in Tombstone and neighboring mining camps. On his return to
the garden one day his partner accused him of having gambled
away the proceeds of the day's sales. A quarrel ensured
and the prisoner was assaulted by his partner who was
armed with a heavy shovel. Believing that his life was
in danger, San Hang Shung seized a hatchet and struck
his assailant one blow form the effect of which he died.

At the trial the prisoner pleaded guilty and was sentenced
to the penitentiary for life. In explanation of his plea he
says that he belonged to one of the Chinese Six Companies
and that all other Chinamen in that community belonged to
other companies. The company to which the murdered man had
belonged were determined on vengeance and when the case
was called in court about fifty of them were present. In
the presence of the court, by signs and whispering they
threatened that if the defendant did not plead guilty
they would murder him.

Feb. 9, 1894

Feb. 1. The deceased was 48 years of age and was the first
Democratic mayor of the city of Springfield. He was elected

JOHN COLLINS
November 4, 1894

John V. Collins, an old and trusted courthouse employee, shot
and killed himself yesterday, shortly after lunch with an
old fashioned Colts revolver. He was despondent and had
talked many times during the past few months about ending
his life. Since the death of his wife a couple of years
ago Collins has been a changed man. He never recovered
from the loss. The suicide occurred at his old residence
at the southeast corner of Third Avenue and Madison Street.

The shot was heard by C.W. McKee who had just rented the
house. Peering in the window he saw the room was filled
with smoke and barely discerned the form of the old man
lying upon the bed. The wounded man lived but an hour.

John Collins was a miner of Butte County, cal. whence he
came here in 1875. He was previous to his death quite
popular and respected. He has a brother at Waterloo,
Iowa and a son at San Bernardino, Cal. A sister-in-law

found a verdict of death by suicide.
