FRANK FERGUSON
Arizona Republican Newspaper
June 25, 1895

Frank Ferguson died at the county hospital yesterday after a
period of nearly forty eight hours unconsciousness, the equal
of a debauch.

Ferguson was brought down from Wickenburg on Sunday night by
Elmer Tompkinson. Justice Kincaid yesterday afternoon
impaneled a coroner's jury consisting of W.S. Varnum, S.Y.
Barkley, S.S. Gish, W.H. Smith, John Isaacs, G.W. Mauk and
W.I. Coon. The body as viewed at the hospital and brought
up to Randal and Davis whence it will be buried at 5 o'clock
this afternoon.

The inquest was adjourned to await the arrival of witnesses
living at Wickenburg. There is a suspicion that the poison
was administered by other hands than his own though it may
not have been given with murderous intent.

A letter was brought down form Wickenburg to the county
physician by Mr. Tompkinson. It stated that on Saturday
morning Ferguson was given an injection of morphine. A
short time afterward he received another injection; later
he was given two and one half grains internally. He took
another dose, how much could not be ascertained but so much
that it was missed from the file. The writer closed by
saying that Ferguson's condition was due to too much
whisky and association with the wrong kind of women.

Mr. Tompkinson said that a few days ago Ferguson met at
Wickenburg a couple of prostitutes from Phoenix. One of
them was a morphine fiend liberally supplied with the drug.
It is not definitely known who these women are. One is known
at Wickenburg as Mollie and the other is supposed to be
Jennie Rogers. Both will probably be arrested and held
until the case has been investigated.

The women had been taken from Phoenix by two men who went
on to Congress. When Ferguson fell in with them there was
another man called Frenchy in the party. They made a tour
of the mining camps in the vicinity and returned to
Wickenburg and they threatened the camp with a whisky
famine. On Saturday morning Ferguson was knocked out and
the morphine fiend in order to restore his capacity and
appetite for liquor began treating him. The treatment
lasted about twelve hours and the sick man had long since
sunk into a deep sleep.

Ferguson was 37 years old with no relatives in the territory.
He had lived in the territory several years and was a freighter
by occupation. Since last fall he had been in the employ of
P.H. Coyle from whom he afterward proposed to purchase the
outfit. Mr. Coyle refused to sell it to him on time and
let him take it telling him that he would give him a chance
to earn money to pay for it.

Ferguson's Inquest
June 28, 1895

The inquest upon the death of Frank Ferguson was concluded
yesterday. It was decided that the overdose of morphine of
which he died was not taken with suicidal intent and that
the women who were with him were not criminally connected
with the case. This finding was based on the statement of
A.E. Price, an acquaintance, who said that Ferguson had
the morphine habit. The witness himself had in his
possession a bottle of morphine which Ferguson had sent
for last week.

The body was buried yesterday afternoon. Some of his friends
here began to make arrangements to give him a respectable
burial after a grave had been dug in Potter's field. The
body was then put into a good casket, and a grave dug in the
city cemetery at the expense of the undertaker.

Mrs. Finley, wife of Mr. Finley, a livery stable man at

was dead. The remains were taken to Lonergan's and
arrangements were made for the funeral today, dependent
upon the arrival of Mr. Finley.

MAXIMO GONZALES
Arizona Republican Newspaper
August 4, 1895

Maximo Gonzalez, 67 year of age, met death at 2:30 yesterday
morning under a falling house. The accident occurred two
miles beyond Tempe on Hayden's Ranch. Gonzalez and two boys
were sleeping in the house, an old and fragile adobe, with a
heavy dirt roof.

Without sudden cause or any warning, the roof fell in and
immediately afterward the walls collapsed and Gonzalez was
instantly killed, the weight falling upon him with so great
a force that his bones were crushed and his body literally
flattened against the hard dirt floor. Both boys were
severely if not dangerously injured.
