Sam E. Castaneda, 76, of Ventura passed away Oct. 11, 2001, in Ventura. He was born on Dec. 13, 1924, in Yuma, Arizona, and had been a county resident for 53 years, coming from Yuma, Arizona.
He was the owner of the Montalvo Market for 20 years and continued his career as a meat cutter until retirement. He was in the U.S. Army, stationed at Fort MacArthur. He served his country in the South Pacific during World War II. Sam loved gardening, cooking and hanging out with his daughters and grandchildren.
He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Stella; daughters and sons-in-law, Loretta and Doug Campbell, Marla and John Shefferd, Victoria and Don Bleeck, and Clarissa and Jim Frasca; grandchildren, Nicole and Colin Campbell, Denis, Dusty and Jason Shefferd, Celeste and David Bleeck, Alicia, Stephen and Brianna Squires, and Christopher Frasca; great-granddaughter, Kaela Shefferd; brothers, Fernando, Lalo and Henry Castaneda; sisters, Aurora Castaneda and Mary DeCorse; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Sam will be missed and remembered by every person who had the privilege of knowing him. Whether you knew him as a husband, father grandfather, relative, friend or neighborhood mayor, you knew that he had a heart of gold and loved to make people happy. His smiling face will always be in our hearts.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated in Yuma by Msgr. Richard W. O’Keeffe, E.V. on Saturday, November 3rd at 2:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Mission, 417 15th Avenue.
Tearence “Terry” Cosgrove
Tearence “Terry” Cosgrove, 69, died October 27, 2001 at home of natural causes, in Morro Bay, California. Born on July 29, 1932 in Bokoshe, OK. He was employed at the AM-PM in Morrow Bay since his retirement. Terry was a Civil Engineer who worked for the Yuma AZ Proving Ground and California Dept. of Highways. He was a Korean War Veteran who served with the United States Air Forcer. He was a member of the American Legion Post I in Phoenix, AZ and was an avid sports fan.
Survivors by loving wife, Dee Cosgrove; daughter, Sandra (Roy) Preston; son Kevin (Candy) Cosgrove; grandchildren, Bryon Taylor, Robin Taylor, Amber and Ashley Cook and Jennifer Cosgrove; brothers, Bud and Gene Cosgrove and stepdaughters Laurie Vincent and Mary Cook.

Richard Kentucky Polk Sr., 60, passed away October 29, 2001 in Yuma, Arizona. He was born December 18, 1940. Mr. Polk, a retired rancher, was General Manager at Cocopah Bend RV & Golf Resort.
Survivors include; his wife Joann Polk of Yuma, AZ., sons, Richard K. Polk Jr. (Molly) of Newport Beach, California and Dan L. Polk II (Kelly) of Stocton, California, sister Linda Timothy (Ron) of Fort St. James of B.C. Canada, brother James K. Polk (Sheila) of Martinez, California, sister, Martha Polk (Howard) Kam Loops, B.C. Canada. and 5 grandchildren.

Charles Glenn Townsend
Charles Glenn Townsend, 95, a resident of Yuma for the past ten years, died October 30, 2001. He was a member of First Christian Church, Council Bluffs, Iowa and retired from Farmland Industries as a truck driver.
Survivors include his children, Glenn C. (Bernadette) Townsend, of Yuma, Gloria Clark, of Iowa and Tim (Betty) Townsend, of Walnut Shade, MO.; five grandchildren; four great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. Mr. Townsend was preceded in death by his wife Alice in 1998.

Cody Lee White, 18, of Somerton, Arizona, entered into a new beginning on October 27, 2001, at Yuma Regional Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family. He passed away after a courageous battle with cancer.
Cody L. White will be remembered for his charming smile, his sense of humor, and his love for guitar playing at his church and at home. He was preceded in death by his father, Alexander White. Survivors include his mother, Fern Soto (Gordon Coyote III); sisters, Megan White, Roxie White, and Muskogee White; brothers, Sanner White, Julian Coyote, Gordon Coyote IV, Elton Sundust, Mitchell Davis and Jason Coyote; grandparents, Paul and Elsie Soto; uncles, John and Vern Soto, Kermit Palmer; great great aunt, Flora (Joe) Palmer; grandmother, Ruby White; aunts; Cecilia and Brenda White, Carolyn Blakely; uncles, Paul and Will Ortega Sr., Sidney Davis; great aunt, Faye Fitzgerald; Godson, Damian Dugan. He also leaves behind many cousins, aunts, uncles, nephews, and friends who dearly loved him.
Cody was born October 5, 1983 at YRMC. He was a senior at Cibola High School. He won awards for baseball and track for half-mile, mile and relay races in Cocopah Sports’ Day. He attended a conference for his Auto Shop class.
Cody was also a member of the Somerton (Cocopah) church of the Nazarene. He held many offices in the Church of the Nazarene-Southwest Indian District. He served as Teen Representative on the Nazarene World Mission Council, Sunday School Teen Representative, and Nazarene Youth International Council Member at Large. On the local level he was a guitarist, a songwriter, Youth Shepard, Recreation Director for Vacation Bible School and an usher.
Cody was a member of the Cocopah Tribe. He was on the Youth Planning Committee in the Commitment to Excellence Program for the Tribe.
Cody loved to travel, meet other people, and go camping. He loved music and was a heavy metal fan. He had so much promise and we looked forward to his future with great anticipation.
He grew up with a special youth group in his church (all cousins) who traveled, sang, played, laughed, teased, and worshipped God. There will be no one who could ever fill that spot the way he did. He added that special spark and his smile will never be forgotten.
Church services will be held on Friday, November 2, 2001 at 3:00 pm at the First Church of the Nazarene, 1900 Avenue A, Yuma, Arizona. Officiating will be Pastors Ray and June Stillings. Tribal rites will follow at the West Cocopah Reservation. Cremation will be 6:00 a.m. Saturday, November 3, 2001.
Pallbearers are the following: Michael Gutierrez, Abraham Castro, Charlie Lackey, Joshua White, Bravie (E.T.) Wanstall, Michael Campos, Joshua Crow, Clarence Keyoite Jr., Clint Keyoite, and Will Ortega Jr. Honorary pallbearers will include family members.
Peter Max Miller
Peter Max Miller, born on November 29, 1926, missing since September 23, 1996, was found dead on September 1, 2001. He would be 74. He owned an auto repair business.
Survivors include his wife, Roberta Miller, of Yuma; daughter, Diane Bell, of Yuma; son, Craig Miller, of Yuma; granddaughter, Brittney Bell and grandson, Christopher Miller.
Services will be Wednesday, October 31, 2001 at Johnsons Mortuary at 10:00 AM.
Robert Wayne Mai
Robert Wayne Mai, 55, passed away on October 9, 2001 at his home in Russell, KS. He was born September 11, 1946 in Russell, KS. He lived his early life in Russell. Robert served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was discharged from military service with a medical discharge because of chemical agent exposure. He worked from 1970 to retirement this year at the Yuma Proving Grounds, Yuma, AZ. He moved back to Russell about four months ago. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Russell, KS.
Survivors include his mother, Edna Mai, of Russell; former wife, Margaret, of Yuma; his sons, Jason Mai (Susan), of Philadelphia and Justin Mai, of Yuma; daughter, Jodi Mai, of Yuma; brother, Gerald Mai, of Russell, KS and two sisters, Linda Dunekack, of Pittsburg, KS and Marilyn Haffner, of Shattuck, OK.
Services were held Saturday, October 13 at the St. John Lutheran Church in Russell. Rev. Harlan Kaden officiated. Russell City Cemetery is his final resting place.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Disabled American Veterans or Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Barbara J. Millenbach
A memorial for Barbara Millenbach, 70, will be held Saturday November 3, 2001 at 1:00 p.m. Family and friends will gather at Ramada #11 just off Avenue A, at the entrance to the Yuma Civic Center and Baseball Complex.
Barbara was born March 10, 1931 in New York State and passed away August 13, 2001 in Los Angeles, CA. from complications of lung cancer. She leaves four children, Steven of Sierra Madre, CA. Cheryl McCoy of Tijeras, NM., Michael of New York and Robert of Yuma.
Barbara was owner of Yuma Office Services, a medical transcription service. She also was a dog trainer and past manager of a local kennel. She bred and competed in dog shows with her German shorthaired pointers. Barbara was a lover of all animals and had dogs, cats and a horse at the time of her death. Her animals always came first. The animal world has lost a true friend.
James Edward Gamble
James Edward Gamble, 26, a resident in Yuma, passed away on October 24, 2001.
He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Carol and Tim Borieo, of Yuma; special dad, Edward Charles Thrasher, of Las Vegas, father, James Richard Gamble, of Ohio; sister, Amanda Kay (Steve) Christmann, of Idaho; grandparents, Gordon and Darlene Pickett, of Nevada; loved one, Debbie Wickersham, of Yuma and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and other loving family members and friends.
Jimmy was a loving son and a brother with a big heart. He loved fishing and most of all baseball. He was employed by Far West Water Co.

Lloyd L. Wheeler
Lloyd L. Wheeler, 83 year old resident of Yuma for 15 years, passed away at Yuma Regional Medical Center October 25, 2001.
He is survived by his wife, Louise L. Wheeler; son, Gary (Sandy) Wheeler, Boulder City, Nevada; daughter, Charlene Mills of Butte, MT and three grandchildren including Cindy Burt. Mr. Wheeler is also survived by brothers; Ralph and Wallace Wheeler, both of Bismarck, N.D. and a sister; Valda Mallard of Moffit, N.D.
Private graveside services and burial will be at Sunset Vista Funeral Home and Cemetetry.

Roy R. Young

Roy R. Young, grandson of Arizona pioneers, and 1940 honors graduate of the University of Arizona and Harvard and Williams College Graduate School Credit and Finance Management, U.S. Army Captain of the 10th Cavalry and 36th Infantry Division, serving in the U.S., Mexico, Africa, Italy and France, moved on to the next life on October 24, 2001.
His occupations, interests and accomplishments were all-encompassing: Indian ruins tour guide, U.S. border patrol agent, State Farm Labor Supervisor and County Agent for the UofA Agricultural Service, sheep and cattle rancher, manager of First National Bank, area manager and vice-president of Valley National Bank, president and owner of Fortuna Water Company, real estate, financial and investment advisor, civic leader in Yuma and elsewhere, holding leadership roles in such diverse areas as the Yuma Friends of Arizona Health Sciences Center, Arizona Health Sciences Center Advisory Board, Honorary Lifetime Member UofA Sarver Heart Center Board, City of Yuma Industrial Development, City of Yuma Fireman’s Pension Board, Yuma County Hospital, University of Arizona College of Medicine Coordinating Advisory Board, City of San Luis Economic Development Board, City of Yuma Police Pension Board, City of Yuma Personnel Board, Yuma County Chamber of Commerce, Yuma County Fair Board, Yuma Golf and Country Club.
Beyond his humanitarian works, he was a raconteur, philosopher and avid student of astronomy. He loved deeply and was loved by so many, including his life-long sweetheart and wife, Jean Young, his children, Roy Robert Young, Jr., Kristine Farnsworth, Denise Young, Monica Plaut, and their spouses, his grandchildren, Meredith Young, Christopher Young, Courtney Bell, Zo Hotaling, Nicholas Farnsworth, Jackson Hotaling, Ashly Farnsworth, Teague Farnsworth, Erika Mendoza, Ramon Mendoza, JanetGarcia, his great-grandchildren, Izabella, Cruz and Santino Hotaling, and friends across the country and Europe.
A private family gathering celebrating his life has been held. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the UofA Sarver Heart Center.
