GARVEY, Lorraine Francis, born September 10, 1911, died May 8, 1996. Survived by daughter, Roberta Rusk of Tucson; brother, Jack (Janis) Wilske of Yakima, WA; granddaughters, Linda Hitchens of Scottsdale, AZ, Candice (Greg) Nieman of Freeport, IL; grandson, James (Kay) Colehour of Mount Carroll, IL; four great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Lorraine was preceded in death by one granddaughter Georgia Colehour and brother Asa Wilske. Lorraine was born in New Richmond, WI and spent her childhood in various small towns in northern WI where her father made a living as a pharmacist. In 1929 Lorraine moved to Chicago, IL where she met and married Warren Garvey. After they divorced she started a long career working for the City of Chicago under the regime of Mayor Richard Daly until she retired to Tucson in 1979. In Tucson, Lorraine became involved in the Irish American Gaelic Society and served in many official capacities for the organization. She hosted the first Irish Hour on KXCI radio for over a year. Her sense of humor, wit, and love of life served her well and will be missed by her family and friends. She was the “Fountain of Youth.’ Memorial Services will be held June 1, 1996 at 2:00 p.m. in the VALLEY FUNERAL HOME CHAPEL, 2545 N. Tucson Blvd., (one block North of Grant). LUSTIG, Donna M., 68, died May 27, 1996. MILO, Sheryll E., age 54, died unexpectedly on May 28, 1996. Born and raised in the Seattle area, she attended the University of Washington and graduated from the University of Arizona. Shery was a devoted reacher who taught for many years first at Pueblo High School, then at University High School, and this past year at Patagonia Union High School. She was honored three times with the Flinn Award for excellence in teaching. Shery was loved and will be remembered by many, many students whose lives were benefited and enriched by her skill and devotion. Special loves of her life included her husband, Ron, their ranch in Sonoita, and the many animals sheltered and cared for over the years. Shery was preceded in death by her father, Alan Erchinger. In addition to her husband, Ron, she is survived by her mother, Delores Erchinger; and her sisters and their families, Susan, Jim, Jamie, and Tristan Gorski, and Sandy, Emmett, Michael, and Christy Maloof. A Memorial Service is planned for Saturday, June 1 at 2:00 at Patagonia Community Church, 387 McKeon Avenue, Patagonia. PARKIN, Linda Jackson, 39, died in her sleep May 28, 1996 at her home in Colorado Springs, CO. “Lindy’ is survived by her husband, Mark; and daughters, Caitlin and Kealey, Colorado Springs; her parents, Carolyn and Jess Jackson, Tucson; brother, Jim Jackson, Colorado Springs; sisters, Sue Jackson, Mountain View, CA, Elaine Jackson and Karen Wright, Tucson; along with four nieces and two nephews. WARD, Hazel D. Guffey Mundell, born in Vandalia, IL on January 12, 1906, went to be with the Lord May 24, 1996 in Tucson, AZ. She was preceded in death by husband, Albert Edward “A.E.’ Ward, 87, on August 31, 1991 in Mena, AR and son Robert L. Mundell. Hazel is survived by daughter, Johanna (George) Hubbard of Tucson; sister, Dione G. WELLS, Robert C., 78, born May 14, 1918 in Hackensack, NJ, passed away at his home, Wednesday, May 29, 1996, after a long and courageous will to live a life he so enjoyed. He came to Tucson 50 years ago. Survived by wife of 53 years, Alice E. Wells; sister, Coral V. Wells of Ocean Grove, NJ and his loving and caring sister-in-law, Mary E. Baldwin of Tucson. He served in the US Army, 45th Infantry Division, during World War II, receiving the EASE Theater Ribbon and a Battle Star for the Italian Campaign. He retired from Hughes Aircraft. He was a charter member of the F.O.P.A. #1, joining in 1957, and was a member of Moose Lodge #747, D.A.V. Rincon Renegade Chapter #18, and the Southern Arizona Union Club. He was proud of his many good friends and especially grateful for the special care given him and his family by the Tucson Veteran’s Homemaker/Home Health Aide. VANDIVER, Robert S., 59, Retired U.S. Army Major, died June 2, 1996 after a courageous battle with lung cancer. Born at Barksdale Field, LA, he resided in Shreveport, LA until graduation from high school in 1955 and enlisting in the Army. Mr. Vandiver’s distinguished military career of 24 years ended with retirement at Fort Huachuca in 1978. During his first tour in Vietnam, he served with Special Forces. He received a direct commission in 1967, and later served a second tour as a staff officer at MACVHQ in Saigon. Moving to Tucson in 1979, he was the Director of Logistics and Maintenance for the Pima County Sheriffs Dept. He later commuted daily to Sierra Vista where he worked for several Government contractors, and taught part-time classes in Public Administration and Communications Management for Cochise College, Golden Gate University, and Arizona State University. In 1990, he joined the staff of Catalina Council, Boy Scouts of America, as District Executive for the Rincon and Santa Cruz Districts. In addition to his professional career, Mr. Vandiver performed extensive volunteer work during his lifetime. Having attained the rank of Eagle Scout himself, he devoted 40 years in such positions as Scoutmaster, Trainer, and District Chairman for the Boy Scouts of America. His selfless devotion to the scouting program earned him numerous awards including the Silver Beaver, the Distinguished Commissioner Service Award, and Wood Badge. He worked the Civil Air Patrol and Davis-Monthan AFB, and taught first aid and CPR classes for the Red Cross in Tucson. Survivors include his wife, Patricia; two daughters, Cynthia Zimmerman and Kathleen Crowley, both of Tucson; a sister, Mary Vandiver, Shreveport, LA; a brother, William Vandiver, Paso Robles, CA; and numerous other loving relatives. A memorial service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on June 5, 1996 at the WOLFREY PEACE CHAPEL, 5225 E. Speedway Blvd, Tucson, AZ. BARFKNECHT, Marion, Born August 19, 1914, died May 27, 1996. Survivors: sister, Carolyn Barfknecht Rayburn, Topeka, KS; two nieces; one nephew. Raised in Pipestone, MN; attended St. Olaf College, Northfield, MN; University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN; graduated University of Washington with a BS in Zoology; also had four quarters in the school of nursing here. When the polio epidemic broke out in California she became interested in the physical therapy field. Graduated from physical therapy course at Stanford University in San Francisco, CA; also took additional training in the Sister Kenny course on the treatment of polio; worked at the Shriner’s Hospital for Crippled Children in San Francisco, CA, Mills Memorial Hospital in San Mateo, CA; WWII 1st Lt. U.S. Army attached to the 103rd General Hospital stationed outside of London, England; attended Columbia University in New York, NY and received a Masters Degree in Education. Returned to California where she was employed by the California Department of Public Health in Ventura County. Then went to Reno, NV where she set up and conducted the physical therapy program for the State of Nevada; employed by the Nevada Society for Crippled Children and the Easter Seal program. Her last position before she retired was in the physical therapy department at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tucson. She was an active member of the American Association of University Women, the Nature Conservancy Arizona Chapter, American Physical Therapy Association and was listed in “Who’s Who in America’ for her outstanding performance and accomplishments. She was an avid traveler having visited in Australia, Denmark, Holland, Italy, and Hong Kong. She will be missed by her many co-workers and friends in the Tucson area.
