VANDER LAAN, John, 83, of Tucson, died April 21, 1996. He is survived by his wife Mae of 48 years; son, Kenneth R. Bowen of Tucson; sisters, Florence Hughs and Ann Brague, both of Riverside, CA; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Son John Jr. and daughter Joan were predeceased. Services Monday 10:00 a.m. EVERGREEN MORTUARY with interment to follow Evergreen Cemetery. Friends may call Sunday 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. EVERGREEN MORTUARY and CEMETERY, N. Oracle and W. Miracle Mile. In lieu of flowers, family requests donations to St. Mary's Hospice of Tucson.

CAREY, Elizabeth Cowan, 92, of Evanston, formerly of Glencoe and Northbrook, IL, died April 17, 1996. Wife of the late Charles A. Carey; mother of Charles A. (Jane) Carey Jr. and the late Elizabeth (James) Bruner; grandmother of seven; great grandmother of 15. Memorial Service 3:00 p.m. Friday, April 26 at the Elliott Chapel of the Presbyterian Home, 3132 Golf Road, Evanston. Interment private. Memorials may be made to your favorite charity. Funeral arrangements by N.H. Scott and Hebblethwaite Funeral Home 847-998-1020. Mrs. Carey was a resident of Tucson for 15 years. She was a volunteer at the Tucson Medical Center and a member of the University of Arizona President's Club and a member of the PEO. Her son, Mr. Charles Carey Jr. is a resident of Northbrook, IL.

Orlo Eckersley Childs 82, passed away at his home in Tucson on Sunday, April 21, 1996, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Son of Alice Eckersley and DeVere Childs, he was born in Loa, Utah, on March 28, 1914. He pursued a long and distinguished career in petroleum geology and higher education. He studied geology at Weber College in Ogden, Utah, and the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, where he received his Bachelor of Science in 1935 and his Master of Science in 1937. He completed his Ph.D. in geology at the University of Michigan in 1945. His early career included teaching appointments at Weber College, University of Michigan, Colgate University and University of Wyoming. From 1949 to 1962 he served as Exploration Projects Director for Phillips Petroleum Company in Denver, Colorado, and directed exploration research in the United States, Canada, and Central America. In 1962, he moved to Menlo Park, California, to direct the research program in Marine Geology and Hydrology for the U.S.G.S. From 1963 to 1970 he was the President of the Colorado Schools of Mines in Golden, Colorado, and during this period he also served on federal advisory boards on natural resources and public lands. He also served as President of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists in 1965-66. From 1970 to 1974 Dr. Childs was Vice-President for Research and Special Programs at Texas Tech University, in Lubbock, Texas. Appointed a University Professor in 1974, he returned to teaching and research, and was named University Professor Emeritus upon his retirement in 1979. Moving to Tucson in 1979, Dr. Childs became Adjunct Professor in the Arizona Bureau of Mines and Geology, and directed a ten-year geological research project (C.O.S.U.N.A.) on the correlation of stratigraphic charts of North America. From 1980-1985 he also served as Director of the Mining and Mineral Resources Research Institute in the College of Mines at the University of Arizona. In 1992, he was awarded an honorary doctorate at Weber State University. Orlo Childs is survived by his wife of 50 years, Elizabeth Swisher Childs; son, Bradley DeVere Childs (and wife Andrea) of Minneapolis; son, Barry Eckersley Childs-Helton (and wife Sally) of Indianapolis; and daughter, Elizabeth Catharine Childs (and husband John Klein) of St. Louis. In addition there are three grandchildren, Sarah and Kristin Childs and William DeVere Childs-Klein. The family will hold a private funeral service in Salt Lake City. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to scholastic assistance for geology students at the college or university of your choice.

DENNETT, Phyllis Peck, passed away April 18, 1996. Phyllis has resided in Tucson since 1967 originally from Minneapolis, MN. She will be remembered at a Memorial Service, Saturday, April 27th, 10:30 a.m. BRING'S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway. Phyllis is survived by her two sons, Paul Dennett of Honolulu, HI and John Dennett of San Mateo, CA.

ELLIS, Helen G., 49, of Tucson, died April 19, 1996. Survived by daughters, Rita Ellis of Tucson, Debbie Ellis of Phoenix; son, David Ellis of Tucson; mother, Rita Babin of Milo, ME; sisters, Dorothy Demers of Milo, ME, Nancy Marshall of Mason City, IA; grandchildren, Ashley Ellis, James Beulke, Anthony Ellis, Erika Beulke. Memorial Services Saturday 1:30 p.m. Catalina United Methodist Church, 2700 E. Speedway with Rev. Ravin Gaston officiating. Arrangements by EVERGREEN MORTUARY and CEMETERY.

FOLEY, Elsie G., 59, died April 24, 1996. Survived by husband, Joseph J. Foley; daughter, Debra Contreras; son, Joseph F. Messina; grandchildren, Christian Messina and Celina Contreras. GONZALES, Ramon M., 64, of Tucson, died April 20, 1996. He is survived by brothers, Refugio Gonzales and Jose M. Gonzales; sister, Sesario Zamora; and children, Ramon, Jr., Juan, Cecilia; and six grandchildren. Visitation will be on Friday, April 26, 1996 at 5:00 p.m. at 7441 S. Camino Vahcom. Mass will be at Cristo Reye on Saturday, April 27, 1996 at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvario Cemetery. Arrangements by HEATHER MORTUARY.

Emiko Haag age 69, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 22, 1996. She was born in Fukushima, Japan on December 14, 1926, moved to Illinois in 1953 and became a US citizen on December 16, 1958. She is survived by her loving husband of 42 years, Duane; daughter, Jennifer of Tucson; and step-son, Gregory of Dallas; two brothers, Masamichi and Akiyoshi Sawai of Chiba, Japan; and one sister, Kazuko Itoh of Tokyo, Japan. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, two brothers and one sister. Private Services will be held in Paris, Tokyo and Tucson at a later date. Arrangements by BRING'S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway.

LAPRADA, Martha M., 72, of San Manuel, died April 23, 1996. Survived by daughters, Francisca (David) Arciniega of San Manuel, Maria (Jose) Burgos of Tucson, Bertha (Roberto) Perez of Mexico; son, Roberto Laprada of Tucson; 25 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. McDONALD, Eileen Cavanaugh, born in Columbus, OH, died April 15, 1996 at St. Joseph's Hospital. She graduated from St. Mary of the Springs High School and Ohio State University, and worked as a medical technologist in hospitals and labs in Ohio and Arizona since 1957. A member of the Catholic Newman Center at the U of A, she had been active in the Cursillo Movement. She is survived by her husband, David; and two sisters, Mary Catherine Jacobs of FL and Margaret Cavanaugh of OH; also numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one brother, Tommy Cavanaugh. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at the Newman Center, on Saturday, April 27th at 9:30 a.m. Services also will be held in Ohio and California.

NAEGLE, Raymond Lynn, 75, of Benson, passed away in Tucson, April 23, 1996. Survived by wife, Doris of Benson; two daughters, Susan Naegle and Nancy Naegle, both of Tucson; two Brothers, Carl Naegle of Benson and Melvin Naegle of Sierra Vista; three sisters, Pauline Davis of Silver City, NM, Ethel Burton of Glendale, AZ, and Marguerite Jennings of Benson; numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial Service Saturday, April 27th at 1:00 p.m. at the Community Presbyterian Church in Benson. Burial 4:00 p.m. at East Lawn Cemetery, Tucson. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Community Presbyterian Church Building Fund or the LDS Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City, UT. Under the direction of Richardson's Mortuary in Benson.

PRATT, Robert J., age 66, of Tucson, died April 21, 1996. He is survived by son, Robert J. (Susan) of Tucson; daughter, Kathleen of NJ; sister, Isabelle Haas of NJ; grandson, Andrew and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Pratt was a longtime member of AA. A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, Thursday, April 25, at 7:00 p.m., with friends gathering prior to the service at 6:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to University of Arizona Cancer Center, 1515 N. WILLIAMS, Leata Beatrice, 96, passed away peacefully April 23, 1996. Born October 5, 1899 in Peasbrook, Nova Scotia, Canada, to Alexander and Cynthia Jamison. Preceded in death by her husband, Norman 'Burt'. Surviving are daughters, Norma (William) Harrelson and Margie Fithian, both of Tucson; sons, Norman Williams Jr., and Jamison (Yvonne) Williams of MI; sister, Belle Murphy of Nova Scotia; 13 grandchildren; and 19 great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews in Canada also survive. ALVIDREZ, Belen G., 84, of Tucson, passed away April 23, 1996. Survived by husband, Rayo Alvidrez; daughters, Bertha R. (Sam) Valdovin and Belen A. (Fred) Cordova; son, Aurelio Alvidrez; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 25, 1996 from 4:00 to 10:00 p.m. at TUCSON MORTUARY, North Chapel, 204 S. Kirk Brookshier Sr. an Arizona resident since 1937 passed away April 19, 1996. Born in Roswell, NM, May 9, 1912, he lived in Tucson, Safford and Phoenix. Kirk was very active in the bowling community of Arizona. He is a member of the Arizona Bowling Hall of Fame, past president of the Arizona State Bowling Association, past executive director of the Arizona Bowling Proprietors Association. He is a life member of the B.P.O. Elks Lodge #1607. Kirk is survived by his wife of 65 years, Clara Belle; sons, Kirk Brookshier Jr. and wife Suzette of Tucson, Monty G. Brookshier and wife Sandra of CA; daughter, Jeanette Hastings and husband Roy of CO. He was 'Grandad' to 13 grandchildren and 15 great- grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, June Usrey and husband Crawford of Phoenix and numerous nieces and nephews. A Memorial will begin at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, April 27, 1996 at ABBEY FUNERAL CHAPEL, 3435 N. 1st Ave. in Tucson. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Youth Bowling Association at 1078 W. Butler Ct., Chandler, AZ 85224.

Guadalupe 'Lupe' Chavez 81, of Tucson, passed away April 21, 1996. She was born April 8, 1915 in Altar Sonora, Mexico. She came to the United States 57 years ago. Preceded in death by her brothers, Adolfo and Roberto; sisters, Virginia and Beatrice. Survived by husband, Frank R. Chavez; daughter, Mary; sons, Augustine V. (Amelia) and Federico V. (Ruthann) Valencia, Manny V. (Alma), Frank V. (Barbara) and Ernesto R. Chavez; a surviving brother, Leopoldo (Maria) Valencia; and many beloved nieces and nephews and friends. She was a beautiful loving wife, mother and grandmother. Special thanks to Tucson Medical Center Hospice and especially to Yvonne and Mary. Visitation will be held Thursday, April 25, 1996 from 4:00 to 10:00 p.m. at TUCSON MORTUARY, (South Chapel), 240 S. EICH, Loy A., went home to be with the Lord, April 20, 1996. Survived by loving wife, Peggy; treasured children, Debbie (Jack) Paulik of PA, Allan (Wendy) Eich of CO, Sandi (Luke) Lucas of TX; adored grandchildren, Jennifer, Brian, and Brent Paulik and Matt, Mark, Daniel and Catherine Eich, Stephanie, Samantha and Shannon Lucas; sisters, Gail (Frank) Barreca and Lois (Bart) Steele also survive.
