SWAIN, Reverend Arthur, S.J., 71, died July 18, 1996 in San Francisco, CA. Father Swain grew up in Tucson and attended Tucson High School before entering the seminary. Bishop Daniel J. Gerke ordained Father Swain in 1955 at San Augustine Cathedral. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Roy, Bob and Bill, all former Tucsonans. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Pauline Swain of Palo Alto, CA; and by his cousins, Joe, John David, Don Confer of Tucson and Betty Confer Jacobs of Santa Rosa, CA; also by several nieces and nephews. Burial will be in the Jesuit Cemetery at Santa Clara, CA.

BRIGGS, James E., beloved husband, father, grandpa and brother passed peacefully at home on July 25, 1996 after a long and valiant struggle with cancer. He is loved and remembered by his devoted wife and companion of 37 years, Lois; and their children in Tucson, Linda Briggs, James E. Briggs Jr. and his wife Marcy, Laura Ward and five Ward wonderful grandsons, Ryan, Kyle, Tyler, Bryce and Dylan; also a sister in St. Louis, MO, Marilyn Ellermann. He is also survived by three children from an earlier marriage, Mark Briggs of Mesa, AZ, his two children and Larry Briggs and Cyrisse Briggs of Tucson. Many friends will miss Jim. He came to Tucson in 1954 and was active in real estate and watched Tucson grow. He was generous with his time and knowledge and enjoyed his association with the Brokers Roundtable discussing the future prospects of Tucson. He was a great Wildcat Basketball fan and missed very few games in the past 30 years. He will be missed by all who knew him. Please, no flowers. The Carondelet Hospice Program was so very helpful and appreciated by him and his family during his final home illness and memorial donations to them or the American Cancer Society, Tucson Branch would be appreciated. There will be a Memorial Service at Unity of Tucson, 3617 N. Camino Blanco in Tucson on Sunday, July 28, 1996 at 2:00 p.m.

CHECKON, Steven, 31, died at home on July 20, 1996 after a courageous battle against brain cancer. Loved and missed by his wife, Marta; his aunt, Maryann; his “mom’, Florence; his “grandma’ Eilene; all his wonderful co-workers at National Cars; and many other friends and relatives. Memorial Service at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 27 at St. Peter and Paul Church, 1436 N. Campbell Ave. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Animal Crusaders or Quality Lifestyles Hospice. Arrangements by WOLFREY PEACE CHAPEL, 5225 E. Speedway. 881-0338.

KITZMAN, Arthur W., age 80, a 39 year resident of Tucson, passed away July 25, 1996. Born January 25, 1916 in Ft. Atkinson, WI. Mr. Kitzman was a Army Air Force Veteran of World War II. Survived by his wife of 55 years, Evelyn; son, Jerry (Ann) Kitzman; grandchildren, Kevin and Justin. Funeral Service will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 27, 1996 at SOUTH LAWN MORTUARY CHAPEL, 5401 S. Park Ave., Pastor P. A. Koelpin officiating. Burial will follow at South Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Redeemer Lutheran Church Building Fund, 200 E. Yavapai Rd., Tucson, AZ. 85705.

MIERS, Anna Marie, a very special lady who never knew a stranger died peacefully and with dignity on July 25, 1996 at age 65. Survived by loving husband, Bud; and children, Terry Miers of Dillon, CO, Jim and Sue Miers of Englewood, CO, Sue and Jim Reeves of Littleton, CO, Janet Miers of Walnut, CA; grandchildren, Holly and Paul Kottenstette, Steven and Thomas Reeves and MacKenzie Miers. Tucson-area resident since 1988. She was active in many clubs and organizations in Sun City. Memorial Services will be held at St. Odilia Catholic Church on Saturday, July 27, 1996 at 9:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to a cancer research fund. MILLER, John Homer “Jack’, Jr., 65, died suddenly Thursday, July 4, 1996 at his Tucson home. Jack was born in Boston, MA, the son of the late Rev. Dr. John H. Miller of Springfield, MA and Frances Van Avery Dodson of San Diego, CA. He was a graduate of the University of Arizona, cum laude, and a decorated veteran of the Korean War serving in the US Navy aboard the U.S.S. Rooks. Jack was employed by the Duval Copper Corporation in Green Valley, AZ for almost 20 years. He retired in 1984. He is survived by his dear friend and companion of almost 40 years, Virginia R. Hanson and her family; his stepmother, Shirley W. Miller of Springfield, MA; and his sister, Mary M. Lienk of Geneva, NY. Jack’s kindness, generosity and good humor will be sorely missed. A Military Service will be given by the DAV Honor Guard with Chaplain Nathaniel Chisholm officiating, Saturday, July 27, 1996 at 11:00 a.m. at ABBEY FUNERAL CHAPEL, 3435 N. 1st Ave., (888-1111). Burial will be in the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona in Phoenix.

THORPE, Jack and Elizabeth, passed away July 18, 1996. Private services and burial were held. Arrangements by WOLFREY PEACE CHAPEL 5225 E. Speedway. 881-0338.

CARRILLO, Andrea H., 85, of Tucson died July 24, 1996. Survived by son, Jesus Huizar of Tucson; sister, Anna Cota; brother, Refugio Huizar, both of Agua Prieta; grandchildren, Jesus Huizar, Edward Huizar, Alonzo Huizar, Frances Medina, Martina Huizar; and eight grandchildren. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 8:30 a.m. Monday at Our Mother of Sorrows Church, 1800 S. Kolb Rd. GARCIA, Stella G., 67, of Tucson, passed away July 25, 1996. Survived by husband, Frank V. Garcia; daughters, Juanita (Louis) Chapman, Teresa G. Lugo, Rachel Estrada (Steve Smith), Connie (Alex Aros) Garcia, Mary Ann (Jesus) Leon; sons, Frank Jr. (Sylvia), David (Nancy), Manuel (Melva), Arnold (Diedre Sloan), Michael (Rochelle) Garcia; sisters, Carmen (Daniel) Soltero, Alicia Robles; brothers, Ramondo, Pete, Raymond Gonzalez; 26 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; many beloved nephews and nieces. Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 28, 1996 from 4:00 to 10:00 p.m. at TUCSON MORTUARY, (North Chapel), 204 S. WATSON, Percy R., Jr., (MSGT – Ret.- USAF), 65, passed away July 24, 1996. Survived by his loving wife, Virginia; daughters, Jeani Baxter of Germany, Gayleen Swan and Nancy Hickey of Tucson; sons, Randy Watson of Utah, Jeffrey Watson of Tucson; sisters, Joan Perrottelli of Norwalk, CT, Bette Hope of Mashpee, MA, Arlene Cinquambre of Grapevine, TX; and many grandchildren; and great-grandchildren. BATES, Gregory, 39, of Tucson, died July 22, 1996. He is survived by beloved wife, Sandy; children, Brittany and Brandon; mother, Fern W. Bates; brother, George; and sister, Kathy (Tom) Brown. Greg was a mechanical engineer at Allied Signal for 9 years and worked in various positions, including management. Friends may call at ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Avalon Chapel, 8090 N. Northern Ave. @ Magee, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, July 25. CONNELLY, Mildred W. was born September 10, 1907 and died July 17, 1996. She was born and raised in Virginia with four sisters and one brother. She received her teaching certificate and moved to Arizona to teach. She settled in Tucson and taught elementary school until her retirement in 1975. She had a great love for children. She continued her education throughout her adult life and loved to travel to foreign countries. She loved people, their customs and languages. She lived life with great humor, joy and courage. She was a great friend, sister, aunt and “extra’ grandma. She lives on in our memories. Contributions may be made in her name to the Alzheimer’s Association. Arrangements by HEATHER MORTUARY.

CONWAY, Jerdi Hamilton, 76, died Sunday, July 21, 1996 of cancer in Hayward, CA. A 37 year former resident of Tucson, moved to Hayward in 1976. Preceded in death by parents, Ora and Willie Hamilton and sister, Willie B. Staton. Survived by two sons, James Smith and John Conway of CA; four sisters, Beverly Ware, Marjorie Hamilton, Doris O’Kelly (James) of Tucson and Edris Brown (George) of CA; niece and nephew, Ora and George Threadgill of Tucson; one grandson, Peter Smith of CA; and a host of nieces and nephews. Jerdi retired from Hughes Aircraft. Memorial and Quiet Hour Sunday, July 28 from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Chapel of Chimes, 32992 Mission Blvd., Hayward 94544.

DEMONT, Russell Doran, died July 7, 1996. Born in Toledo, OH, August 11, 1918, he moved to Arizona and attended Tucson High School and the University of Arizona. He was president of Sigma Chi. He entered the Army Air Corps in April 1941. Commissioned a 2nd Lt., he flew 28 B-24 combat missions in Europe and North Africa, including the first low level attack August 1, 1943, on the Ploesti Oil Field in Romania. In 30 years of military assignments he commanded many squadrons and flew 25 types of aircraft from heavy bombers to jet fighters. Retiring in 1969 as a full Colonel, he earned decorations including the Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross with one oak leaf cluster, Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters and the Purple Heart. married to Babette D. Rice for 49 years, he is survived by three daughters, Charmaine Farmer, Juanita Hall and Ramona Guzman; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Services were held in Campbell River, BC.

HIGGINS, Steven Michael, 38, died July 21, 1996. Son of Nancy Barnes of Santa Barbara, CA and Thomas G. Higgins, Jr. of Douglas, AZ; brother of Lori Bresk of Santa Barbara, CA and Allison Gerber of Houston, TX; grandson of Thelma Dannenfelzer of Santa Barbara, CA. He has numerous friends in Phoenix and Sierra Vista where he was a former resident. High School graduate of San Marcos High School in Santa Barbara, CA. A member of the Sunriders Motorcycle Club and former road captain of the club. Memorial Service 11:00 a.m. Sunday, July 28, 1996 at Tucson Women’s Club, 6245 E. Bellevue. KENT, Tara Ann Marie Kent, Age 18, born September 16, 1977, passed away July 20, 1996. Dearly beloved daughter of parents Cathy and Mick Seulean and father Franklyn Kent; dear sister of Justin Kent. Also survived by grandparents Robert and Betty Malody and Frank Kent; aunt Robin (Malody) and uncle Paul Singer; uncle Bob Malody; aunt Debbie and uncle Michael Ronstadt; many great aunts, great uncles and cousins in AZ, WA, TX, CA, MA, IL, KS and IN. Preceded in death by beloved grandmother Dottie Seulean. Tara graduated from Sahuaro H.S. in 1996 and was “on her way to the U of A’ this fall. She will be missed by her family and close friends. She touched our lives with her compassion, laughter, humor and smiles, which will always be with us. Requiem Mass at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, 602 N. LEON, Jenaro, 67, went to be with the Lord July 23, 1996. Survived by beloved wife, Josefina; sons, Jenaro Jr., Ray, George (Claudia) Leon; daughters, Hope (Johnny), Anita (Ruben); nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brothers, Frank and Joe Leon; sister, Terry. Jenaro was a veteran of World War II and retired after 43 years from Southern Pacific. Visitation will be held Friday, July 26, 1996 at TUCSON MORTUARY, (North Chapel), 204 S. NOON, Fred, 88, died July 24, 199. Cattle rancher and Arivaca historian, passed away at his home in Arivaca after a long illness. He was born on the family homestead at Oro Blanco, A.T. on January 4, 1908 to Arthur and Martha Clayton Noon. He was preceded in death by his wife, Zella; his sister, Helen; and brothers, John and Horton. He is survived by his daughter, Mary (Rob) Kasulaitis; grandchildren, Ann and Mike Kasulaitis; sister, Katherine Grantham; and numerous cousins; nieces and nephews. He was a graduate of Tucson High and the University of Arizona, where he played clarinet in the UA band, and was also a member of the Tucson Symphony Orchestra. He served on the boards of Trico Electric Cooperative, The Arizona Historical Society and was a lifelong member of the Arizona Cattleman’S Protective Association. Graveside Service will be held at Evergreen Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 26, 1996. Memorial Service will be held at Old Arivaca Schoolhouse at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 27. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Arivaca Clinic. Arrangements by TUCSON MORTUARY, INC.

SJOBERG, Nellie Grace (nee Forsman), who celebrated her 90th birthday on June 3rd went to be with the Lord on July 23, 1996. She was preceded in death by her husband, August. She is lovingly remembered by many friends; cousins; nieces and nephews; especially her niece, Carolyn Bossard; and her loving caregiver and great-niece, Brenda Waddell; and great-great-nieces and nephew, Brianna, Lindy and Ryan Waddell. Burial will be July 26 in Firth, ID. Arrangements by HEATHER MORTUARY.
