GINSBURG, Genevieve Davis, died June 21, 1996 at home at the age of 78. A lady of strong will, indomitable spirit and great capacity for loving friendship, Genevieve will be remembered and missed by a vast array of friends, family, counselors and admirers from all walks of life. Genevieve was born in Paterson, NJ, the only child of Sam and Esther Hirshberg Davis. She attended local schools, and received a degree from New York University in Home Economics. She met her future husband, Martin, when she was sixteen. He failed to impress her at that time, but managed to prove his worth by the time they married, when both were 23. The Ginsburgs lived in New York City until 1942, when Martin left the States to command a base in the Aleutian Islands. Their first son, Paul was born while Martin was away. Demonstrating her strong and independent spirit, Genevieve walked to the hospital-a distance of a little over a mile, to deliver the baby. Their second son, Fred, was born in 1948. The entire family moved to Tucson in 1957, first living in Indian Ridge and then building a home in the Catalina Foothills. Martin worked as a developer, while Genevieve raised her sons and indulged her passion for writing in the wee small hours. After her children were grown, she returned to the University of Arizona, where she received a Master’s degree in Vocational Rehabilitation Counseling. She was a counselor with the Arizona Department of Vocational Rehabilitation until 1970, when she became a member of Behavior Associates, a psychological and educational consulting group. She was a marriage and family therapist and a member of the Board of Directors. After Martin’s death in 1974, Gen became more and more involved in helping other widows, through her writing and her establishment of Widowed to Widowed Services, a support group for widows and widowers. She was the spiritual leader of the local group until the time of her death. She became a nationally and internationally known lecturer on the topic of widowhood. Genevieve wrote two books: TO LIVE AGAIN and WIDOW: REBUILDING YOUR LIFE. She also wrote a humorous and inspiring monthly column in the Widowed to Widowed newsletter and was a commentator on National Public Radio, speaking with black humor on the topic of aging. In recognition of her community service, Genevieve received both the Jefferson Award and the Arizona Governor’s Award. Until her illness, Gen was an active hiker with the Southern Arizona Hiking Club. She loved ATC and the Arizona Friends of Music. She also loved gathering huckleberries and watching the Snake River flow past her summer home in Idaho. Her younger son Fred died in 1968. She is survived by her son, Paul; her daughter-in-law, Marcia; her grandsons, Michael, Peter and John; her nieces, Amy Hirshberg Lederman and Nan Rubin; as well as many relatives, friends and admirers.
