Evelyn Burgstahler

Evelyn Burgstahler, 86, a resident of Yuma for 15 years passed away November 25, 2001 at Yuma Regional Medical Center.

She is survived by her husband Bill; sister Shirley Cotton and two nieces. Friends may call from 1:00pm until 4:00pm Saturday, December 1, 2001 at Sunset Vista Funeral Home, 11357 E. 40th St. A service will be held at 4:00pm.

Graveside services and burial will be in Santa Cruz, California.

Evelyn was loved by many and will be greatly missed. Arrangements by Sunset Vista Funeral Home, Cemetery and Crematory.

Betty Ann McConnell

Betty Ann McConnell, 76, 3000 Catalina Drive, Yuma, a homemaker and mother, went to be with God on November 25, 2001, in Phoenix, Arizona. She was a resident of Yuma from 1993 until her death.

She was born Betty Ann Venema on January 30, 1925, to Albert and Anna Venema in South Charleston, Ohio. She was married to Jack P. McConnell, currently of Mannington, West Virginia, from 1942 until 1977. She was loved and will be very missed by her Sons Albert Lynn McConnell, Chandler, Arizona, and Jack K. McConnell, Yuma; Daughters-in-Law Cathy McConnell, Chandler, AZ, and Ellen McConnell, Yuma; Grandchildren Erica Gash, Yuma, Alisha Brenckle, Fort Jackson, SC, Jack K. McConnell, Jr. Yuma, Nickolas McConnell, Chandler, AZ, and Ciara McConnell, Chandler, AZ, and five great grandchildren, three of whom reside in Yuma.

The family requests that no flowers or gifts be sent, but that contributions be made to the American Heart Association in her name. In accordance with her wishes, she was cremated.

A memorial service will be conducted at Noon on Saturday, December 8th in the Recreation Room of the Catalina Apartments where she resided.

Catherine Helene Maury (nee) Anna Catherine Pellegrino

Catherine Helene Maury, 82, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her loved ones in Yuma Az. on November 30, 2001. She was born December 23, 1918 in Chicago, Illinois,

to Italian immigrants; Nicholas Pellegrino & Filomena DeVito. She retired from Long Beach Memorial Hospital, Long Beach, Ca. as Supervisor of Food Service

She had been an active member in the Baptist Church, teaching in the Awana Club, Sunday school and child care.

She is survived by her daughters Diane Huddleston of Tyler, Texas, Lorine Hawbaker of Dallas Center, Iowa, Mary Heiligenthal of Yuma, Arizona and Barbara Pfannenstiel of Yuma, Az.Sons; Kenneth Weaver of Fenton, Missouri and Richard Weaver of Phoenix, Arizona. Grandchildren; Michael Bates, Michelle Tokarski, Marvin, Debbie & Ricky Cantos, Marie Kuel, Daniel Hawbaker,Amanda Lee and Wendy Weaver, Vikki and John Heiligenthal, Malinda & Dennis Pfannenstiel. Great Grandchildren; Lauren & Katie Bates, Tasha Tokarski, Jason Cantos, Butch & Anthony Cantos, Austin and Nicholas Lee.

She was preceded in death by brothers Michael & Louis Pellegrino, Sisters Minnie Vendegna & Mary Armatys and Great Granddaughter, Caitlin Marie Cantos.

Visitation will be at Johnson Mortuary Chapel on Tuesday, December 4, 2001 from 4:00pm- 8:00pm.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, December 5, 2001 at 10:00 am. Reed Lohrenz will officiate. Final resting place will be Desert Lawn Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Gary & John Heiligenthal, Bill & Dennis Pfannenstiel, Michael Bates, Art Santos, Don Huddleston,and Don Hawbaker.

Honorary Bearers are Kenneth Weaver & Richard Weaver.

Memorial donations can be made to Hospice of Yuma and Disabled American Veterans.

Charles “Charlie” McLish Higuera

Charlie Higuera, 83, passed away on November 30, 2001 in Yuma, AZ. He was born in Yuma on May 18, 1918. He is survived by his loving wife Mary Sainz Higuera; daughers, Adrianna Machut of El Centro, Ca., Charlene Kutz of Melbourne, Fla.; sister Gloria Sheridan and brother Joe of Yuma, six loving grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Charlie was preceded in death by his parents Ramon, and Clara; sisters Hope and Trini, and brother Edward, all of Yuma. He served his country honorably in WWII and received a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star, and was honorably discharged October 11, 1945.

He and Mary were united in Holy Matrimony in 1942 and he worked at Roberts Market for thirty years. Charlie and Mary then went to work for Sprouse-Ritz, opening and managing stores throughout the state of Arizona. They retired at Lake Havasu in 1988 and returned to their home in Yuma and spent many happy summers in their RV at Pine Top.

A viewing was held 5-7pm Monday December 3, 2001 at Johnson’s Mortuary,followed by a Rosary.Funeral services will be held Tuesday Dec. 4, 2001 at 2:00 pm at Johnson’s Mortuary.

Robert Walton Consaul

June 4, 1918- November 28, 2001

Robert “Bob” Walton Consaul, 83, of San Diego, California passed away Wednesday evening at home. Bob was born in Rocky Ford, Colorado, but grew up in Brawley, California.

During WWII Bob worked as a flight instructor for Ryan Company for aviation cadets and then served in the Infantry. He retired to San Deigo after working in the produce business in Yuma, Arizona. Bob was a lifetime Rotarian both in San Diego and Yuma.

Survivors include his wife, Gene, daughters Cindy, Debbie and Patti, six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Services will be held on December 5, 2001 at 11:00 (Arizona time), graveside at the Yuma Cemetery.

A “Celebration of Life” service will take place on December 8, 2001 at 11:00 California time at the Clairemont Mortuary, 4266 Mt. Abernathy Ave., San Diego.

In lieu of flowers, donations maybe made to a charity of your choice in Bob’s name.

William A. Gill

William A. Gill left this world to be untied with his Lord Jesus Christ on November 30, 2001. He was born September 21, 1921 in Indianapolis, IN. A Yuma resident since 1983; he is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Marjorie E. Gill of Yuma, his Daughter and son-in-law Cindy and Richard Ashby, his granddaughter and her husband Crystal and Ryan Tyler along with his great-granddaughter Kayla Ann Tyler, all of Temecula, CA., his niece Judy Jo Braden of FL and cousins James Somerville and Lilian Sullivan.

His grace and humor blessed the lives of many friends and co-workers throughout the years.

William was an active member of the Gila Mountain Methodist church. He served as an officer in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, was a member of American Legion Post 19, and a member of the Yuma Moose Lodge.

To honor his wishes, there will be a private cremation service only. In lieu of flowers, donations to Hospice of Yuma or the Gila Mountain Methodist building fund would be appreciated.

Lazaro L. Ortega

To our loving father, brother and Grandfather,Lazaro L. Ortega, 84 of Yuma passed away on December 2, 2001 during a car accident. He was born on December 16, 1916. A retired farm worker and foreman for Don Donnelly farm and Barryman’s Farm.

Proceeded in death by his ex-wife Dolores Castillo Ortega, his Dad Ponciano Ortega and Mother Guillermina Leyva Ortega.

He is survived by brothers; Daniel, Roberto, Ruben, Salvador, Alfonzo. Sisters; Elvira, Otilia Ortega. Daughters; Gloria Torres, Lupe Ortega, Sylvia Tumbaga, Seyla Barradas, Gloria Ortega, Margarita Barley (Darrell Thomas), Maricella (Andy) Gonzalez, Marcia (Keeny) Escalanti, Patricia Jose.
Sons; Jamie Ortega, Rafael Barradas, Alonzo Ortega, Francisco J. Ortega.

Grandchildren Augustine Tumbaga Jr., Rosio Tumbaga, Armida Tumbaga, Keeny Escalanti Jr., Kenrick Escalanti, Kathy Jo. Montague, James Barley, Allison Thomas, Jesse Ortega, Robert Ortega, Milson Jose Jr., Joseph N. Jose, Joselyn R. Jose, Andrew Gonzales, Jr., Tommy D. Gonzales, Lilianna Ortega, Roxanna Ortega, Joanna Ortega, Rosanna Ortega, Alonzo R. Para Jr., Nena Ortega, Lycia Ortega, Jr., Seyla Ortega, Javier Ortega, Jr. Daniel Ortega,Danell Ortega, Jr., Diana Cruz Ortega, Isaac Ramos, Boaz Ramos and Jasmin Ortega and numerous great-great-grandchildren.

At the request of the family two services have been arranged to accommodate all friends and relatives. Viewing will be at Yuma Mortuary on Wednesday, December 5, 2001 from 12:00pm to 4:00 pm and full services will continuein San Luis (DIF) Mexico where he will be laid to rest in peace as he wished.

Pallbearers include Andrew Gonzales, Sr, Keeny Escalanti, Sr., Darrell Thomas, Marlow N. Jose Jr., Joseph W. Jose, James Barley, Jesse Ortega, Kenrick Escalanti, Kenney Escalanti Jr, and Jimmie Castillo.

Honorary Bearers are Javier Ortega and Alonzo Ortega.

Mr. William Z. Ybarra “Lobo”

William Z. Ybarra, 72, passed away November 12, 2001 in San Jose, CA. He was born June 12, 1928 in Yuma, AZ. Mr. Ybarra a veteran of WWII and Korea / HQ, 1st.B.N., was an active member of Post 802 for 10 years, past Post Commander and a former member of 82nd Airborne Assoc. Club of Yuma, AZ.

Mr. Ybarra was preceded in death by parents Severa & Francisco “Chavalo” Ybarra,his sister Esther Quijada, and brother Jimmy Hernandez.

Survivors include Catalina Quijada, Helen Quintana of Casa Grande, Sylvia Ybarra, Francisco Ybarra “Taco”, Robert Sammy Gabriel and Paul from Buckeye.

Services have been held in San Jose, CA. He will be missed by many friends and family.

Charles G. Lamb

Charles G. Lamb, 81 of Grand Coulee passed away at Coulee Community Hospital on November 25, 2001. He was born to Charles G. and Eugenia (Stickney) Lamb in Seattle on May 31, 1920.

He was educated at Queen Anne H.S. in Seattle and taught at Edison Vocational School. He married Elnora “Jackie” Carton on December 21, 1940 in Seattle, WA. They owned and operated Lamb Rockeries in Seattle and Kitsap County. Charles enjoyed woodcarving NW Indian art, boating. He was a member of the Desert Rat Patrol in Yuma, AZ, and the Indianola Community Church.

He is survived by his darling wife at the family home; two sons, John (Alta) Lambof Onalaska, WA, Jim (Linda) Lamb of Yuma, AZ; one daughter, Kathleen (Larry) Jacobson of Grand Coulee; one brother, Eugene Lamb of Bremerton, WA; two sisters, Evelyn Short of Silverdale, WA and Dorothy Halls of Bainbridge Island, WA; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. One brother, Selden and one granddaughter, Gretchen, preceded Charles in death.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made in lieu of flowers to; Coulee Medical Foundation P.O. Box 171 Grand Coulee, WA 99133-0171.

At his request no services will be held. Strate Funeral Home, Grand Coulee is in charge of arrangements.

Muriel E. Malone

Muriel E. Malone, 93, a resident of Yuma for 46 years, passed away Tuesday, November 27,2001. Visitation will be held from 12pm - 4pm Monday, December 3 at Yuma Mortuary, 551 W. 16th St. A memorial service will be held at 2:30pm with dessert and coffee at Emerald Springs following the service.

Muriel was a warm and loving mother and friend and a talented teacher. She was an English and Journalism teacher first at Yuma Union High School and then moved with the first class to Kofa High School where she taught until she retired.

Muriel was known and loved by her students, many of whom have stayed in touch with her throughout the years and some even shared her 93rd birthday with her at Emerald Springs on February 19, 2001.

During her teaching years she earned a Wall Street Journal Foundation Fellowship to attend the University of California at Berkley. Her newspaper staff at Kofa consistently earned the highest award given nationally for excellence in preparation of high school newspapers.

Muriel was active in the First Methodist Church womens group and the Yuma Grandmothers Club. She was also a member of numerous bridge groups. She was the wife of Murrey A. Malone, deceased in 1984. Murrey was a safety officer at Yuma Proving Ground.

After retirement, Muriel and Murrey spent their winters in Yuma and their summers at their cabin at Lake Isabel, CO, where they had many wonderful friends.

She is survived by two daughters: Rae DeCastro of Houston, Texas, and Jan Bednarz of Chicago, Illinois; four grandchildren: Cathi DeCastro Ferrick of Fairfax, Virginia, Kimberly Bednarz of Chicago, Illinois, Colleen Bednarz of Maui, Hawaii, Howard Lee DeCastro of Houston, Texas; and two Great-granddaughters: Siena Malone Ferrick and CampbellLane Ferrick of Fairfax, Virginia.

Muriel resided first at 1212 18th St. until 1984 then at the Saguaro Park until September 2000. She was currently a resident at Emerald Springs Retirement Center.

Muriel was born in Kansas on February 19, 1908 and had four older sisters and two older brothers.
