GODBOUT, Lillian Marie, 92, resident of Tucson for 65 years, died Friday, September 27, 1996. She is survived by her six children, 12 grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren. Mrs. Godbout and her family were founding members of St. Cyril’s Church. Mrs. Godbout was a member of the Catholic Daughters of Americas and D.A.V. Auxiliary, Chapter 4. A visitation will be held from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 1, 1996 at EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY CHAPEL, 5801 E. Grant Rd. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 2, 1996 at St. Cyril’s Church, 4725 E. Pima St. Interment will follow at South Lawn Cemetery.

GONZALEZ, Maria V., 59, of Tucson, passed away September 30, 1996. Preceded in death by her mother Elodia L. Verdugo. Survived by husband, Manuel C. Gonzalez, father, Emilio B. Verdugo; daughters, Maria (Tony) Molina-Guasp and Martha Gonzalez; sons, Manuel (Larry) Robin, John (Virginia), Jesse (Rebecca) and Emilio (Melva) Gonzalez; brothers, Emilio L. Verdugo and Jose Verdugo; 11 grandchildren; many nephews and nieces. Visitation will be held on Friday, October 4, 1996 from 4:00 to 10:00 p.m. at TUCSON MORTUARY, (South Chapel), 240 S. POWERS, Michael Raymond, 25, of Tucson, hosted the last sports broadcast of his budding career before dying in an automobile accident, September 28, 1996, in Jackson, MS. Born in Neenah, WI on June 30, 1971 to Albert J. Powers and Jeannine Powers Howell. Mike was to graduate in December from Mississippi College with a Radio/TV Communications degree. Loved and survived by his parents, relatives, friends, and sisters. Mike left pursuing his lifelong dream of sports broadcasting. His memory will be especially cherished by his soulmate, friend, and sister, Kathleen Powers; sisters, Jenny Powers Watt, and Maureen Powers, all of Tucson. Sisters, Colleen Powers Bodemuller of Seattle, WA and Christi Powers-Zielinski of Neenah, WI will never forget the tall, cherubic, blonde-haired, blue-eyed brother who taught us to be gentle with each other. SNYDER, Edward G. ”Lalo”, 19, of Tucson, went to be with the Lord to start a new life September 29, 1996. Survived by parents, Eduardo and Rosemary Snyder; beloved girlfriend, Samantha Sanchez; sister, JoAnn Snyder; also many beloved uncles, aunts, and cousins. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 2, 1996 from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. at St. Ambrose Church, 300 S. TOWNSEND, Charles E., 68, (passed away) September 27, 1996. Survived by children, Susan, Gary, Pat (Don), Michael (Deborah) and Peggy; seven grandchildren, Matthew, Jana, Rashel, Loryelle, Sarah, Adam and Eric; two sisters and one brother; nieces and nephews. Charlie was born and raised in Calais, Maine and moved to Tucson with his wife Sally and family 41 years ago. He was employed by AWECO for over 37 years and has been enjoying retirement for the last two years. He loved music and always had a tune to whistle or a joke to tell. His many loved ones and friends will miss him dearly. The family wishes to thank the many doctors and wonderful nursing and hospice staff at St. Joseph’s Carondelet Hospital. Memorial Services will be held 3:00 p.m. Thursday, October 3, 1996 at EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY CHAPEL, 5801 E. Grant Rd. Donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

VETRANO, Jean, born in Brooklyn, New York December 1, 1943 and resident of Tucson, Arizona for the past 21 years, went to be with the Lord on September 28, 1996. Survived by beloved husband, Peter ”Sonny”; sons, Peter and Cheryl, Richard; daughter, Kim; sister of Robert and Terry Scirica, Phil Scirica, Charles Scirica, Ronnie Scirica, Anthony and Christine Scirica and Phylis Ryan; sister-in-law of George and Carol Vetrano, Henry and Barbara Vetrano, Richard Vetrano, Jerry and Janice Simone; and many nieces and nephews and cherished friends. ”Our Angel of Love Touched the Hearts of Many and Will Never be Forgotten.” Visitation will be Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. with a Rosary to be said at 7:00 p.m. Friday, at the ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Avalon Chapel, 8090 N. Lois A. Miller Wright, 75, of Tucson, died October 2, 1996.Survived by Miller sons, Tom (Judy), Jim (Linda) and John (Dianne); eight grandchildren; sister, Betty Massa of Battle Creek, MI; and many nieces, nephews and friends.Preceded in death by husbands, Robert J. Miller and Gilbert O. Wright. She was active in the San Manuel Tri-Community for 22 years retiring to Tucson for the past eight years. Memorial Service 2:00 p.m., Saturday, October 5, at San Manuel Community Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Leukemia Society of America, 2990 E. ZWERK, Lilly, passed away peacefully on September 29, 1996 at 91 years of age in Tucson, Arizona, where she had resided since 1992. She was born Lilly Esther Baumann on December 1, 1904, in Blumfield Twp, Michigan. She retired from GM Parts Plant in Saginaw, MI, in 1965 and was preceded in death by both her husband, Otto M. Zwerk, whom she married in 1922, and her son, Eugene H. Zwerk. She is survived by her son, Glenn J. Zwerk; grandchildren, Christie Jackson, Randall Zwerk, and Steve Zwerk; also great-grandchildren, Cheryl Kemper, Bradley Yant, Jessica Zwerk, Erik Zwerk and Megan Zwerk, all of Tucson; as well as a brother; three grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews in Saginaw, Michigan. No services are planned in Tucson. Burial will be at Rose Lawn Memorial Gardens in Saginaw, MI.Arrangements by Hudgel’s SWAN FUNERAL HOME.

ARNOLD, Betty J. After a brief but valiant battle with cancer, Betty Arnold went on to eternal peacefulness on October 1, 1996. She was 61 years old. Survived by her loving husband, Guy Arnold, Jr.; mother, Lorraine Williams of Starbuck, MN; sister, LoAnne (Harold) Beuckens of Starbuck, MN; brother, DeWayne Williams of New Prague, MN; her children, Terry Blue of Albuquerque, NM, Dawn (John) Farmer of Tucson, AZ; stepchildren, Steve (Linda) Arnold, John (Debbie) Arnold, Cathy Hull; and grandchildren, Michael and Brandon Blue, Jessica and Joe Arnold, Amy and Todd Arnold.
Betty loved her family and always thought of others before herself. Her strength and wit will be deeply missed, as it was her courage that kept those around her strong. Until we meet again, Mom, we love and miss you. We have been blessed.

BURR, Sherwood P., M.D., died October 2, 1996. A webfoot from Oregon. He attended the University of Oregon and Oregon Medical School. He served in the Army Air Force from 1941 to 1946 as an M.D. and was with a bomb group on Guam. He took his residency in Ophthalmology at the University of Iowa. He came to Tucson in 1949. He was the president of the Southwest Ophthalmology Assoc., belonged to theTucson Rotary Club since 1955, organized the doctors band that played for Tucson Medical Center Hospital shows, and volunteered his time at the Veterans Hospital.Survived by his wife, Mary Anne; daughter, Minda Burr; sons, Sherwood Zachary and Bradley Brien; granddaughters, Megan and Maryanne; and grandson, Sherwood Lloyd. In celebration of Sherwood’s life there will be an open house for dear friends from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the family home. Memorial donations to your favorite charity.

CALLIE, Christine Anne, age 20, our daughter, sister, friend, niece, cousin and granddaughter. Christine was truly a complete person – - full of love, life, compassion, and generosity. Her smile and spirit will always light the lives of those who knew and loved her. Christine was the daughter of Dr. Albert and Joyce Callie and sister of Mary Beth and her fiance Tom Toomey; Albert and his wife Trina; Tony, John, Maria, Margie, Katy and James. She was the granddaughter of Lena Callie.Christine was born at the University Medical Center and grew up in Tucson. She attended Fruchthendler Elementary; Townsend Jr. High; Salpointe Catholic High School, where she excelled as an honors student and as an athlete on the varsity soccer team; and Colby College in Maine, where, as a Dean’s List student, she majored in Spanish; played varsity soccer; served on the Academic Affairs Committee and as a Resident Assistant; volunteered in ARC (Adult Reading to Children), Colby Friends, and as a CCD teacher; and repaired books at the Colby Library. This August, because of her love of Spanish culture, Christine began her Jr. year abroad in Salamanca, Spain. For the past month she lived with the Sanchez Rincon family, enjoyed excursions to sites throughout Spain, and took language, literature, and even Flamenco dancing classes. Although Christine was in excellent health, she collapsed and died suddenly on the morning of Friday, September 27, 1996 of an apparent cardiac arrhythmia. Christine is in the hands of the Lord; still, her family, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends all over the country and world love and miss her very much. In memory of Christine, we ask that donations be made to the Christine Anne Callie Memorial Scholarship Fund, The Arizona Bank, 4707 E. Grant Rd., Tucson 85712 (323-5403). Rosary and Visitation will be held on Friday, October 4 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at BRING’S BROADWAY CHAPEL. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 5 at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 1800 N. Camino Pio Decimo. CARROLL, Ruth Crabtree, 68, of Tucson, Arizona, died Tuesday, October 1, 1996. Lovingly survived by: daughter, Dale Reimer; son, Charles Carroll; son-in-law, Tracy Reimer; daughter-in-law, Kathy Carroll; grandchildren, Christian and Amy Reimer, Justin and Jami Carroll; brothers and sisters, John Crabtree, Harold Crabtree, Algerline Jeffries and Grace Bailey. Ruth was a volunteer for the Tucson Medical Center in labor and delivery. Services will be held at ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Avalon Chapel, 8090 N. Northern Ave. at Magee, Saturday, October 5, 1996 at 11:00 a.m. with a short visitation with family to follow.

DUMES, Scott 36, passed away on September 29, 1996. A man who brought laughter and joy to all who knew him is now enlivening the heavens. Scott was born in Tucson in 1959 and was preceded in death by his loving parents, Roselyn and William Dumes. Scott leaves behind his devoted sister and friend, Sandi Oniszko, his brother-in-law, Frank Oniszko and niece and nephews, Libby, Ryan and Levi. Scott also leaves behind his older brother, Art Dumes; sister, Patricia Zarin; brother-in-law, Ira Zarin and nephews, Michael and Bennie. Also mourning our tragic loss is best friend, pal and buddy, Michael Mendel. Scott will also be missed by his loving stepsons, Sam and Luke. Scott graduated from Rincon High School and the U of A. Scott began business as manager of the Sambo’s Restaurants. He then operated his own restaurant, The Fancy Farmer, for many years. Scott went back to college to earn his C.P.A. He next worked for the Big ”8”for quite a few years. Scott was also the comptroller for Arizona Airways. Scott joined his uncle Leon Bear in business. They were quite a team. Scott modernized the office with computers, faxes, electronic filings and the business flourished. Scott Dumes was the kind of person we all want our children to grow up to be and he will be greatly missed. Memorial Services will be Friday, October 4 at 10:00 a.m. at Temple Emanuel, 225 N. Country Club.

FOLEY, Rev. Roosevelt, 75, of Tucson, passed away September 28, 1996. Survived by son, Randolph of Tucson; sisters, Verna Davis of Tucson, Maple McGrew of TX; brother, Albert Foley Jr. of TX. Rev. Foley pastored a number of churches in Tucson. Visitation Sunday, October 6, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at SOUTH LAWN MORTUARY CHAPEL, 5401 S. Park Ave. Funeral Service 11:00 a.m. Monday, October 7, at Prince Chapel A.M.E., 602 S. stone with Rev. C. Jessel Strong officiating. MASON, Jennie L., 86, of Tucson, died October 2, 1996. Survivors include, daughter, Hildred (Richard) Lackaby of Tucson, Beula (Bud) Seaman of Tucson; brother, Carl (Juanita) Melburn of Sullivan, IN; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred in 1984. Jennie was a long time member of the Church of Christ and was loved by all. She has been a resident of Tucson since 1948, moving here from Indiana. MAXWELL, Charolette T. (nee Clark), of Tucson, passed away October 2, 1996.Survived by daughters, Cathy (Louis) Perea and Deborah (Gary) Chapman; two grandchildren, Joseph and Jeremy Perea; and two great-great-grandchildren, Joseph Jr. and Matthew Perea. Also survived by sisters; Lois Nixon and Bonnie Olson; and brother Jesse Clark of Shelburn, In. She was preceded in death by her husband, Max Maxwell on December 9, 1995.
