HATCH, Louis D., of Tucson, passed away on July 9, 1996. The son of Ed and Neil Heidt Hatch, Louis was born on December 9, 1908 in Erie, Pennsylvania. Mr. Hatch lived a full and happy life. When he was in the 5th grade, he dropped out of a German speaking school in order to work supporting his family. During the Depression, he worked for the WPA and helped build the bridges in Sabino Canyon. After that, he was awarded a full scholarship at the U of A, majoring in Wildlife Biology. He retired in 1975 as a Wildlife Biologist and Refuge Manager for the Department of the Interior, a career that allowed him to work in the outdoors with nature, plants and animals. Lou cherished his volunteer time as a Shriner and as an adviser to the Boy Scouts of America. Despite his failing health, Mr. Hatch enjoyed good times, singing every Irish song at a St. Patrick’s Day party this past March. Mr. Hatch was preceded in death by his loving wife, Marie and his three brothers, Kenneth, Richard and Robert. He is survived by his two daughters, Jacquie(David) Schmidle of Tucson, Lorraine Jackson of Fort Collins, Colorado and his two sons, Kenneth of Mentor, Ohio and Robert of Jackson Hole, Wyoming. His brother Donald and sister Helen Rudd reside in Erie, Pennsylvania. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. A memorial service for Lou will be held on Monday, September 16, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Philips in the Hills Episcopal Church in Tucson. To honor his memory, donations in his name may be sent to the Alzheimer’s Association of Southern Arizona or to the Ronald McDonald House of Southern Arizona.
JARDINE, Elliot P., 80, of Tucson, died Monday, September 9, 1996. He is survived by his children, Lynne Ramsey, John Jardine; mother, Ethel Miller, and five grandchildren. Mr. Jardine was one of the top graduates of Colorado School of Mines in 1948. He worked as a mining engineer in Utah, Idaho, and Arizona for 18 years and then changed careers, becoming a well known Horticulturist in Tucson. Memorial Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, September 13, 1996 at EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY, 5801 E. Grant Rd. Private interment will be at East Lawn Palms Cemetery.

STURGEON, Ted R., 64, of Tucson, passed from this life after a long courageous battle with respiratory illness into eternal peace with God on September 10, 1996. He is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Sandy. THOMAS, John Robert, died at the LaCanada Care Center in Tucson, AZ, on August 29, 1996. He was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on July 20, 1913. He and his wife, Winifred Rockwell Thomas were residents of Keuka Lake, Wayne, New York, but spent their winters in Tucson. Mr. Thomas retired in 1976 after 40 years of service with American Airlines, having served as a Vice President. He was a member of the Glenn H. Curtiss Museum in Hammondsport, New York. The only survivor other than friends was his wife, Winifred Rockwell Thomas, who passed away September 4, 1996. A joint Memorial Service will be held for Mr. and Mrs. Thomas at a later date in Hammondsport, New York, with interment at Pleasant Valley Cemetery. THOMAS, Winifred Rockwell, died at the LaCanada Care Center in Tucson, AZ, on September 4, 1996. She was born in Hammondsport, New York on January 8, 1918, the daughter of Albert and Rena Rockwell. She and her late husband, John Robert Thomas were residents of Keuka Lake, Wayne, New York, but spent their winters in Tucson. Mrs. Thomas worked in the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance in Albany, New York during the administration of Governor Thomas E.Dewey. She was married to John Long, a World War II Air Force pilot, who was killed in action in the Pacific Theatre of Operations. On June 7, 1959, she married John Robert Thomas in Corning, New York. Mr. Thomas predeceased her on August 29, 1996. Mrs. Thomas was a member of the Glenn H. Curtiss Museum in Hammondsport, New York. She is survived by many friends in the area and three nieces, Martha Fraser of Vero Beach, FL, Mary J. Koehler of Boulder, CO, and Carolyn Jessen of Buffalo, New York. A joint Memorial Service will be held for Mr. and Mrs. Thomas at a later date in Hammondsport, New York, with interment at Pleasant Valley Cemetery. UIHLEIN, Peter Joseph, 67, of Tucson, died at UMC Hospital on September 5, 1996. There will be no Funeral Service other than Graveside. Flowers or other bequests are not desired. This interment will take place on Friday, September 13, 1996 at 12:30 p.m. at the National Cemetery located north of Phoenix near Carefree, 23029 N. Cavecreek Rd. Mr. Uihlein completed his B.A. at the University of New Mexico and his M.A. in Government Administration at the American University in Washington, D.C. He then served at the Navy and State Departments for 25 years before eventually retiring in Tucson. His final tour of duty was in the Executive office of the Secretary of the Navy. WASLEY, Bessie N., born November 6, 1915, of Tucson, AZ, died September 3, 1996. She was a Registered Nurse at Tucson Medical Center until her retirement in 1980. MAHONEY, Betty Grove, 74, died August 10, 1996 in Bakersfield, California after a long illness. She was the daughter of Betty Reed Pfleeger Grove and George Thomas Grove, originally of Pennsylvania. Mr. Grove was for many years the Tucson and Pima County Civil Engineer. A graduate of Tucson High School and the University of Arizona, she was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority. In Tucson, Betty worked in the dispatch department of the Southern Pacific Railroad for Western Way Magazine and then as a proofreader for Tucson Newspapers. Her final employment in Arizona was as the personal secretary of the prominent journalist Westbrook Pegler. After moving to the San Francisco Bay area of California she was employed by the California Wine Institute and the journalism department of the University of California at Berkeley. On January 19, 1952 she was married in Tucson to George Lewis Mahoney and moved with him to his cotton farm near Bakersfield. Her services to the Bakersfield community were many and varied. She filled leadership positions in the Local Parent-Teacher Association, school board, Congregational Church, and Bakersfield Art Foundation. She was recently president of the Board of Directors of the Bakersfield Museum of Art. Survivors include her husband, Lewis; her elder brother, George Grove and wife Pat Clark Grove of Salem, Oregon; twin brother, Bob Grove and wife Norma Stevenson Bates Grove of Tucson; three daughters, Anne Mahoney Kruse of San Diego, Margaret Mahoney Dietsche of West Springfield, Mass, and Maureen Mahoney of Tucson; grandchildren are Jesse Dent of Tucson and Meghan, and Amelia Dietsche of Massachusetts. Services were at College Heights Congregational Church, Bakersfield. Contributions may be made to the Betty Mahoney Scholarship Fund of the Bakersfield Museum of Art.

SCHOCK, Raymond David, died Sunday morning, September 8, 1996 at his home in Tucson. Born August 14, 1908 in Denver, Colorado, he was the eldest son of pioneer rancher R.L. Schock. His father homesteaded in the Elgin area in 1912 and Ray went to a little one-room schoolhouse in Rain Valley and then on to Tombstone High School. He completed his education in California, learned to fly in 1928 and became a journeyman stereotyper. He worked on several newspapers in the Los Angeles area and flew for various local flying services. Before the US entered the war, Ray ferried bombers to Canada from where they were flown to Great Britain. When the US entered the war, he flew as a civilian pilot with the CAP on submarine patrol and border patrol in Texas. Later, he owned and operated two GI Flight Schools in San Antonio and Sequin, Texas, with his wife, Maggie. Returning to Elgin and Tucson in 1949, he resumed his dual careers as stereotyper and flight instructor. He retired from Tucson Newspapers, Inc.after 25 years but continued his career as a flight instructor. Although the onset of Parkinson’s Disease ended Ray’s flying as a flight instructor, it remained one of his greatest interests until his death. He was a member of AOPA and a life-member of the OX-5, a pioneer airman’s association. He is survived by his wife, Maggie; daughters, Susan Schock and granddaughter, Kate Marie Grinold of Silver City, New Mexico and Jerry Belt (Frank) of Palmdale, California; grandchildren, Bill Belt and Jane Belt Smith (William); and five great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two nephews, William and Raymond Schock of Elgin, Arizona. Preceding him in death were his father and mother R.L. Schock and Nellie Irene Pike; two brothers, Howard and Leslie F. Schock; and former wife, Virginia. Following cremation, Rays’ ashes will be scattered over the historically noted landmark, formally known Mt. Bruce, but locally called “The Biscuit”. It was at the foot of The Biscuit that his father located the original 160 acre homestead. At Ray’s request, services will be private. Raymond had Parkinson’s disease for 27 years and asks that remembrances be made to the Tucson Chapter of the American Parkinson’s Disease Association, 1650 E. Ft. Lowell Rd, Tucson, Arizona 85719.
