HENDLEY, Florence H., 92, of Tucson, died August 14, 1996. Survivors include: sons, Paul McClain of Tucson and Richard of Missouri. Memorial Service will be at ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel, August 19 at 9:00 a.m. Arrangements by ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel, 1050 N. Dodge Blvd. (at Speedway).

McCLURE, Allan G. ‘Mac', was born February 16, 1916 in Bisbee, Arizona. He died August 14, 1996 in Tucson, Arizona. He graduated from the University of Arizona in 1942. He married Anna M. Davis on December 6, 1945. He served in WWII and the Korean War and retired as a Lt. Col. from the Air Force in 1964. Following his retirement from the Air Force, he taught school at Spring and Gridley Junior High Schools in Tucson. He retired from teaching in 1981. He was preceded in death by his parents Mr. and Mrs. Ben McClure, his sister Peggy Jones and his son Dr. John W.McClure. He is survived by his wife, Anne of Tucson; daughter-in-law, Peggy McClure of San Antonio; nephew, Don Allan Jones of California; and cousin, Anna Lou Stafford of Phoenix, Arizona. Funeral Services will be held 3:00 p.m. Saturday, August 17, 1996 at the EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY CHAPEL, 5801 E. Grant Rd. Honorary pallbearers: Dick Hodges, Woody Harris, Bill Wallace, Sean Hodges, Mike Hodges, Richard Hodges and Mike Flick. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to the Sonoran Desert Museum, 2021 North Kinney Road, Tucson, Arizona 85743.

NEAL, Ruthy, 75, of Tucson, died August 13, 1996. Survivors include: daughters, Roberta Sawyer of Tucson and Carol Zipp; grandchildren, Michael Zipp of CA, Barbara Bronson of VA, Melissa Cochran of IN, Aaron Zipp of CA and Kimberly Sawyer of Tucson; also survived by seven great-grandchildren. Memorial Services will be held August 17 at 2:00 p.m. at ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel, with Lucy Jones Voisey from Lutheran Campus Ministry officiating. NIEHUS, Lucile M., 73, passed away July 25, 1996. Memorial Services will be Thursday, August 22, 1996 at 2:30 p.m. in the Chapel of Trinity Presbyterian Church, 400 E. University Blvd., Tucson, AZ.

SHEARD, Alfred Jesse, 78, died August 15, 1996. Husband of Linda Sheard of Tucson; father of Scott Sheard of IN, Craig Sheard of San Diego and LaChandra Mosher of Tucson; brother of Vernon Sheard of PA; nine grandchildren also survive. Memorial Service 4:00 p.m. Friday, August 16 at BRING'S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway, with Pastor Harriet Collins officiating.

GASTELLUM, Manuel A., 77, of Tucson, passed away August 12, 1996. He is survived by his loving wife, Armida; four sons, Richard (Linda), Daniel (Bettina), Jerry (Rachel) and Robert E. (Terri) Gastellum; 11 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter; two brothers, Jim Gastelum and Luis Gastellum; two sisters, Francis Bachelier and Hortencia Gallegos. Preceded in death by parents Santiago and Santos Gastelum; brother, Alfonso Gastelum and sister Gregoria Bachelier. Manuel retired from TUSD as a facilities management supervisor after 32 years of loyal and dedicated service. Manuel was an active member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1200. We are eternally grateful for your love, guidance, compassion, strength, and your work ethic that will impact generations to come. ‘Como Manuel no hay otro.' Family suggests donations be made to the Manuel A. Gastellum Memorial Scholarship Fund, care of Pueblo High School Alumni Association, 3500 S. 12th Ave. Tucson, Arizona 85713. HATHAWAY, Lt. Col. G.W. (U.S. Army Ret)Gaynor William Hathaway passed away Tuesday, August 6, 1996, in Honolulu, Hawaii. He is survived by his wife Dorothy A. Hathaway, also of Honolulu, Hawaii; and two daughters, Janet Hathaway, an attorney in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, and Anne Florey, a teacher in Ninilchik, Alaska. He is also survived by three grandchildren.
Gaynor Hathaway was born on January 11, 1915, on the old Sorrels Ranch along the Santa Cruz River (now Kino Springs). He was the eldest of seven sons of William and Lucille Hathaway, a Santa Cruz County pioneer ranching family. He was a graduate of Nogales High School and the University of Arizona. Surviving brothers are Lincoln of Chino Valley, Arizona, Judge James D. Hathaway, Bob and Paul of Nogales, AZ. He was predeceased by his brothers Gilbert and Gregory.
Gaynor had a full and very active military career as a U.S. Army officer. He was a veteran of both World War II and the Korean Conflict, serving over two and a half years in active combat zones. During World War II, he served as an intelligence officer in the Pacific campaign in the Philippines, New Guinea and finally, Japan. He was among the first U.S. Army personnel to enter and occupy Japan, literally before the smoke cleared from the two atomic bombs that ended the war. Gaynor served on General MacArthur's staff during the post-war occupation of Japan. In addition to serving in the Korean conflict, Gaynor had military assignments including tours in Germany and France, and served as adviser to the Army Reserve in Tucson from 1956 through 1958. He retired in 1962 as a Lieutenant Colonel after serving 24 years in the Army.
Gaynor was decorated numerous times for meritorious service to his country. Among his many U.S. military decorations were the Distinguished Service Medal (Army), Legion of Merit, Bronze Star and Air Medal.
While serving in Korea, Gaynor was impressed by the plight of the many refugees and how they were aided by the Red Cross. That experience influenced him, upon retirement from the Army, to work for the American Red Cross where he was assigned to Germany and to locations in Idaho, Alaska, and Washington.
Gaynor will be laid to rest in Hawaii.

KIDD, Bennette P., a longtime Tucson resident, died quietly last Saturday after a lengthy illness. She was 86. Born in Houston, Texas to Alfred Platte and Addie Williford Platte, she first came to Tucson in 1945 and became a permanent resident in 1950. She was married to the late George Kidd III, also of Houston, and after his death in 1953 worked for many years at Tucson Realty and Trust, retiring in 1974. She is survived by her son, George of Arlington, Virginia; and her cousin, Mary Louise McKee of Orange, Texas. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 17 at St. Philip's-in-Hills Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to a memorial fund at St. Philip's. Arrangements by HEATHER MORTUARY.

LEWIS, Kathleen Harriet Foley, 73, of Marietta, GA died Thursday, August 8, 1996. She is survived by her sons, Mark A. and Joanie Lewis of Marietta, GA and Harry E. Lewis of Tucson, AZ; her grandchildren, Kaitlin, Molly and Patrick of Marietta, GA; sisters, Gladys Angermeyr of Morton, MN, Dorothy Ward of Jacksonville, FL; and brother, John Foley of Cerritos, CA. A Memorial Mass will be held for Mrs. Lewis on Saturday, August 17, 1996 at 9:00 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church, Tucson, AZ. In lieu of flowers please make contributions to American Cancer Society or the American Red Cross. Arrangements by CREMATION SOCIETY OF THE SOUTH 770-941-5352.

LITTLEJOHN, Ida, 86, of Tucson, died August 12, 1996. Private interment EVERGREEN MORTUARY and CEMETERY.

RYAN, John Michael, 48, a lifelong resident of Tucson, died today, August 14, 1996 at Hospice Family Care. He is survived by his sisters, Mary CoVan of Albuquerque, NM, Pat Patterson of Prescott, AZ and Jeri Burk of Pocatello, ID; his brothers, Timothy Ryan of Lake Havasu, AZ and Dennis Ryan of Islamodrada, FL. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Martin Raymond and Blanche Ryan. He will be sorely missed by his family and will always be remembered for his kind heart and his sense of humor.

SHANNON, Quentin Lee, departed this life on August 11, 1996 at 41 years of age. Born in Newport News, VA May 19, 1955. After his discharge from US Army at Ft. Huachuca, AZ in 1981 he moved to Tucson. He leaves to mourn children, Brandon, Rashad and Courtneigh; and their mother, Cynthia Pennington, all of Tucson; parents, Lucy and Raymond Forbes of Waterbury, CT; a sister, Harriet Dolby of Raleigh, NC; and many other relatives and friends. Visitation Friday, August 16, 1996 at 1:00 p.m. with Funeral Services at 2:00 p.m. with Elder Willie Shelby of Beacon Memorial COGIC officiating at ABBEY FUNERAL CHAPEL, 3435 N. 1st Ave., (888-1111).

SMITH, George T., 44, died August 12, 1996. Son of Ray and Bettie of Benson; husband of Linda Smith of Benson; father of Stefanie Smith of Glendale; brother of Ruth (Jim) Haislip of CA and Pam Smith of Benson; uncle of Tom Sigley of Tucson, Tami Parkinson and Wendy Merrill, both of Benson, Garrett Haislip and Tanner Haislip, both of CA; several great-nieces and nephews also survive. He was a 20 year retired veteran of the Tucson Police Dept., president and founder of the National Institute for Drug Enforcement Training and recognized national authority of undercover narcotics investigation. He was a recipient of many department and community awards. Funeral Service 10:00 a.m. Friday, August 16 at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 400 E. University, with Rev. Gary Gard officiating. Burial to follow at TMP, East Lawn. Friends may call from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Thursday, August 15 at BRING'S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway. In lieu of flowers, contributions to DARE or the Parkinson's Foundation would be appreciated.

SPENCE, Thomas E., Ret. Capt. US Army, died August 9, 1996. Survived by wife of 53 years, Shirley C. Spence; two sons, Stephen B. and T. M. Spence; granddaughter, Cassidy Spence, all of Tucson; brother, Edmund D. Spence of IL. Thomas retired after serving in the Corp of Engineers during WWII and Korea for 22 years. Then 11 years civil service with the Topographic Command in Washington D.C. Private family services were held. Contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 2221 N. VANCE, Marie B., 74, of Tucson, passed away August 11, 1996. Preceded in death by husband, Jack L. and son, Jack ‘Butchey' Sr. Survived by loving daughter and son, Georgienne and James David of Tucson. Marie was a grocery checker for 27 years at Goodman's, Lucky's and ABCO. Marie was kind, loving and had a great wit – she will be missed and loved by all who knew her. In compliance with her wishes, there will not be a service.

YOUNG, Donna J., 43, of Mesa, a Legal Secretary, died August 8, 1996. She was born in Sturgis, MI and was raised in Tucson. Survivors include her husband, Larry M. Young; parents, Paul Baker and Leta Chapman; brothers, Duane and Perry Baker; sisters, Peggy Hirschmann and Linda Williams. Services to be held Saturday, August 17, 1996 at 10:30 a.m. at Desert Heritage Church, 1020 N. Horne, Mesa, AZ. Contributions to the Donna Young Memorial Fund at any Bank of America.

BROWNING, Helen Lucille, 68, passed away August 12, 1996 after a short illness. Survived by her husband, William; son, Jimmy (Patty) Mullett of OR; daughter, Judy (Duane) Kirby of WA, daughter, Sandy (Steve) Pike of AZ, daughter, Patty (Brian) Poate of PA; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; five sisters, Maxine Lambert of WV, Sylvia Trent of AZ, Imogene Sturgill of FL, Lois Chapman of FL and Wilma Keaton of VA; sister-in-law, Betty Wilcox of OH. Helen was a member of the Central Pentecost Church. Visitation at 12:00 noon Thursday, August 14 at the Central Pentecost Church, 2202 N. Freemont, with Funeral Service following at 2:00 p.m. Burial in South Lawn Cemetery.

FITCH, Ruth G., 90, died August 11, 1996. Resident of Pomerene, AZ for the last five years. Survived by son, David (Marian) Hopson of Tucson, AZ; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by daughter, Willa Jean Hopson of Napa, CA. Ruth was a teacher and author. She was active in trail rides in Arizona and her home state of Missouri. She has written several articles about horses and related subjects. Ashes will be buried in Missouri with a Graveside Service.

GALLARDO, David, 35, died August 11, 1996. He is survived by his children, Misty, Denise, Veronica, and Jose all of California; mother, Alice Gallardo and sister, Sylvia Ochoa both of Tucson. Also surviving are aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father, Jose Robles Gallardo. Visitation will be at Cristo Rey Church on Thursday, August 15, 1996 beginning at 4:00 p.m. Mass will be on Friday, August 16, 1996 at 9:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Holy Hope Cemetery. Arrangements by HEATHER MORTUARY.
