PARKER, Drew E., 39, was killed by hit and run driver while riding his bicycle on January 17, 1997. PEREIDA, Maria C., 'Nana', 93, of Tucson, passed away January 13, 1997. Born August 6, 1904 in Sonora, Mexico, she moved to Douglas in 1960 and then later to Tucson. She was dearly loved and will be missed by many. She will be remembered for her strong will, her ability to make others laugh and her love of all animals. WILKES, Charlotte Vickers nee Bedford, 54, of Tucson, died suddenly of complications due to asthma on January 22, 1997. She is survived by her husband, William F. Wilkes and her children, Deborah C. Wilkes of San Francisco, W. Russell Wilkes of Denver and Linda Katherine Wilkes of Scottsdale. She is also survived by her mother, Janet Bedford; her sister, Jennifer Sporleder, both of Tucson; and her brothers, Eugene Schuyler Bedford of Oklahoma and Dirk Bedford of Anaheim, California. Charlotte, 'Vicki', had been a resident of Tucson since 1964. As well as being a wonderful wife and mother, Vicki was very active as a volunteer in the community. Over the years she has served enthusiastically as a volunteer for: the Tucson Museum of Art League, the Assistance League, Manzanita Elementary Parent-Teacher association, Salpointe High School Parent’s Association, The Junior League and the St. Luke’s Board of Visitors. Vicki has worked for the last 10 years in the office of Dr. Larry Leber, where she created a warm atmosphere for her co-workers and patients alike. All who knew her loved her and were lifted by her spirit and boundless energy. We can scarcely imagine this vibrant and lively person gone. She will be greatly missed. BLAKELEY, Elizabeth J. Gubser, 29, passed away suddenly January 19, 1997 in St. Louis, MO. Survived by husband, Derek of St. Louis; mother, Shirley Curtis of Tucson; father, Merlyn Gubser of VA; brother, William 'Bill' Curtis of Tucson; grandfather, Charles Curtis; paternal grandmother, Orva Gubser; aunt, Gloria Curtis Lutz; and cousin, Andrea McEvoy, all of OR; aunt, Ann Carr of WA; and many friends including those at the History Department at Washington University. Elizabeth grew up in Tucson and graduated from CDO High School in 1984 where she received the Donaldson Award for outstanding student and was also a National Merit Scholar. She graduated from Carlton College in 1988 Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa. She was close to completing her PHD at Washington University in St. Louis where she was past head of the Graduate Student’s Association, a NEH Fellow and a member of various historical associations. She also taught history at Washington University and St. Louis University. A Memorial Service will be held Friday in St. Louis. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Community Food Bank.

MELONE, Joseph J. He was born March 23, 1919 and joined his three brothers on January 18, 1997, Marco, John and Bill. Joe made his living working construction before his retirement. He was a proud American who earned a purple heart in the jungles of the Philippines during World War II. He enjoyed gardening and inventing household gadgets. (He rarely threw anything away.) He was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by his nephew and nieces, Frank Melone (Gail), Christine Hamilton (Rick), Elsie Velek (Jerry), Jonna Art (Mickey) and Annette Melone (Judy); and his three sisters-in-law, Teresa Melone-Durako, Clara Melone and Marie Melone. The family wishes to thank Uncle Joe’s friends at the local Disabled American Veterans Post #18 for all the friendship and affection they gave him over the years. RING, Charlotte Addie, 81, of Tucson, died Tuesday, January 21, 1997. She is survived by her husband, Clinton; sons, Robert C. Ring of Tucson, Alan D. Ring of Louisville, KY; grandsons, John of San Diego, CA, David of Boston, MA, Steven of Austin, TX, Evan of Louisville; great-grandson, Clinton of Boston; and sister, Eunice Roberts of Bisbee, AZ. Mrs. Ring graduated from the Univ. of Arizona in 1937 and taught school in Bisbee for one year before marrying Clinton in June, 1938. She and Clinton moved away from Arizona later that year, but retired to Tucson in 1976. She was a member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church and Gamma Phi Beta Sorority.
