PICKENS, Grady Wright, 72, passed away peacefully at home December 29, 1996 surrounded by his loving family. Born on June 28, 1924 in La Rue, Texas. He is survived by his devoted wife of 50 years, Chloe 'Todi' Pickens; sons, James (Debbie) Stacy of Albuquerque, NM, Grady Wright II (Linda) Pickens of Tucson, AZ; daughters, Judy Koenig of San Antonio, TX, Kerry Carlson and Sharon Pickens, both of Tucson, AZ; grandchildren, Rebekah Carlson, Ethan Carlson, Chloe Carlson and David Hinds; brothers, A.T. (Lorene) Pickens of Nederland, TX, James (Bert) Pickens of West TX; sisters, Dorothy Jean Moore of Bellmead, TX and Nina Jo (Howard) Pedigo of Axtell, TX; uncle, Charles (Elizabeth) Pickens of Waco, TX. At the age of 18 he joined the USMC where he spent 3 years before joining the Air Force in 1947 from which he retired 22 years later. In 1969, Grady and Todi moved to Tucson. He graduated in 1977 with a B.S. Degree in Civil Engineering from the U of A. He was a member of Masonic Lodge 530 in Hubbard, TX. He was a devoted husband and father, an avid golfer, who also spent hours tinkering with automobiles. At his request there will be no Memorial Service. Donations may be made to Carondelet Hospice Services.

REINIG, William C. Jr., 86, died December 29, 1996. Survived by his children, Rosa Lepker, Catherine Brolund, Gretchen Everling, David and William Reinig; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Bill was a resident of Arizona for the past 50 years and a U.S. Marshall. Memorial Services will be held 3:00 p.m., Thursday, January 2, 1997 at EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY CHAPEL, 5801 E. Grant Rd.

SMITH, James Lee, 43, of Tucson, died December 26, 1996. Survived by daughters, Lisa Smith, Jaime Bradly, Patricia Tebo and Stacy Smith all of Tucson; mother, Mary E. Smith of Los Angeles, CA; sister, Deborah Carol Stelter of Tucson. Funeral Service will be Friday 10:00 a.m. in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints North Stake Center, with Bishop Steven Broadbent officiating. Interment Evergreen Cemetery. STAMLER, Benjamin Daniel, 25, left for Heaven on third day of Christmas 1996, 12/3/96. Developmentally intensely challenged yet brimming over with love, trust, joy; touched many hearts. he is joining his beloved Papa, Hampton Edward, and has left his deeply saddened mother and brother; Kristin T, and H. Edward II, and devoted friend Ernest Thode, plus many dear people and professionals who have helped with his care. Holy Mass: Jan 11, 1PM, St. Andrews Ep. Church, followed by informal reception and sharing of 'Danny Stories'; pictures and your written stories for scrapbook are greatly appreciated.Donations suggested to The Arc of South. THOMPSON, Robert Lee, 70, of Greensboro, North Carolina and Rincon Country West R.V. Park, Tucson, died December 29, 1996 at the University Medical Center. Born March 29, 1926 at Hopkinsville, Kentucky. married May 29, 1948 to Janet Adams, his surviving widow. Other surviving relatives are his daughter, Nancy Lee Thompson and granddaughter, Emily Thompson-Bruder of Tucson; a son, David Lee Thompson and his wife, Karen of Tampa, Florida, plus a brother, Clarence Eugene (Tom) Thompson of Mesa, Arizona and a brother, Donald E. Thompson of Syracuse, New York. Robert worked 25 years for the Carrier Corp. in Syracuse, New York as an order correspondent, then in Greensboro, North Carolina as a parts manager for 19 years, retiring in 1990. He was an avid golfer and bowler, loved boating, fishing, wood working and furniture refinishing. Bob and Janet loved RCW at Tucson as 'Snowbirds' with the many friends and neighbors they found at RCW. Bob enjoyed the Senior Olympics during 1996, winning some medals (silver and bronze). Bob served his country during World War II as a Radio Operator in the U.S. Army Airforce in the China – Burma – India Theatre. Bob was a member and past master of Salina Lodge #955 of Syracuse, New York. He was a member of the Scottish Rite of Greensboro, N.C. and a recent member of Sabbar Shrine of Tucson. A Memorial Service will be held Friday at 11:00 a.m. on January 3, 1997 at The Holy Way Presbyterian Church, 4221 West Ajo Way in Tucson, with Reverend Raymond Thomas officiating, plus members from Nelson Bledsoe Lodge of Masons will present Masonic services and a flag presentation. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Robert Thompson Memorial Fund which will be donated to charities chosen by family.

WOOTTON, Helen F., 78, a 51 year resident of Tucson, passed away December 30, 1996. Born November 29, 1918 in Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico. A member of the YMCA. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Joe; son, Alan (Peggy) Wootton; daughter, Tina (Arthur) Baldonado; grandchildren, Heather and Joshua; two sisters and one brother. A Memorial Service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 4, 1997 at SOUTH LAWN MORTUARY CHAPEL, 5401 S. Park Ave. Rev. Les Plattner officiating.

Keeley of Littleton, CO and Kathleen Yukna of Gurnee, IL; grandmother of Travis Lippert of El Paso, TX. HOLAHAN, John J., 74, of Green Valley, passed away December 28, 1996, in Tucson. Survived by wife Dorothy Holahan, of Green Valley; sister, Catherine Casey, of Port Charlotte, FL. John was a member of Telephone Pioneers, American Legion, Knights of Columbus and former member of Desert Hills Golf Association. Mass Thursday, 10:00 a.m., Our Lady of the Valley, Green Valley, AZ. DOUGHERTY, Joseph Howard
1 October 1896 – 28 December 1996
Joseph was the beloved husband of Marie L. Dougherty, a marriage that has lasted for 73 years. He was the loving father of, Jeannie, Joseph, Patricia and Robert. Preceded in death by his daughter Jeannie and son Joseph. He is also survived by his daughter-in-law, Katherine Dougherty; and son-in-law, Saul Fox; 17 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. God, Country and Family were not just words to Joseph, he lived by them. He fought in WWI and WWII, serving as a pilot, first in the Army’s Signal Corps and then the Army Air Corps. Scripture Service 11:00 a.m., Thursday, January 2, 1997 at BRING’S MEMORIAL CHAPEL, 236 S. Scott with Father Van Wagner of SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church officiating. Military honors will be rendered by the V.F.W. Friends may call at the chapel one hour prior to the service Thursday morning.

JUDD, Claire M., 71, of Tucson, died Saturday, December 28, 1996. She is survived by her daughter, Claire (Bill) Gilkinson; grandchildren, Mimi Gilkinson, Wills Gilkinson. Formerly of New Jersey, Mrs. Judd moved to Tucson 18 years ago to be closer to her family. Graveside Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 2, 1997 at East Lawn Palms Cemetery, 5801 E. Grant Rd. Friends may call at EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY, one hour prior to the service. MANUEL, Evelyn N., 81, of Tucson, passed away December 29, 1996. Survived by daughters, Marie Manuel Salcido, Norma Manuel Miguel and Edith Manuel Preston; son-in-law, Daniel L. Preston; sons, Michael Manuel, Marvin Noriego; 20 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 2, 1997 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at family’s residence, 2444 W. Nahagio Daha Wog.
