HORNER, Betty Huston, passed away December 20, 1996 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Born January 5, 1922 in Paris, France, Betty devoted her life to her family. Betty was predeceased by her husband, G. Norman Horner and she is survived by her sons John H. Horner (Tucson) and Peter T. Horner (Lancaster, CA) and their families. She will now be reunited with her husband and will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by her sons and their families. Betty would like to thank all of her friends and members of Handmaker Hospice and Care teams whose thoughts and caring attention during her ordeal were a great source of comfort and strength. Mother of Arthur Bedoya of Tucson, Romelia (Ismael) Duarte of Tucson and Ramona Tafoya of Tucson; sister of John Mendoza of Tucson; grandmother of Gina (Andy) Celix of Tucson, Michael (Sherri) McGraw of Colorado Springs, CO, Alexandra McGraw of Tucson, Mark (Linda) Nunez of Tucson and 28 other grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren and many neighborhood children who knew her as Gramma also survive. Mrs. Nunez was preceded in death by her husbands, Ramon Torres and Gustavo Nunez and children Alexander Torres, Nancy Lee Kingery and Leo Torres. She was the proprietor of Tia Olivia’s Tortilla Factory and El Matate Restaurant in Oracle, AZ and was formerly employed at El Torero Restaurant in Tucson. BROWN, 'Grandma' Betty, went to be with the Lord on December 22, 1996 at age 86. Betty was born in Geff, Illinois on September 13, 1910. She moved from Valparaiso, Indiana to Tucson in 1962. She was a hairdresser in her early years, but is best remembered for her many volunteer activities after her 'retirement'. In her sixties, she was a foster mother for 13 different babies. In her seventies, she was a weekly volunteer at the Beal Center on the University of Arizona campus where she brightened the lives of many students. She was the biological grandmother to four loving grandchildren, but in her church and neighborhood, she was 'Grandma' to hundreds of young people. We were all touched by her example of Christian love and generosity. We learned from her, and we will miss her. Betty was preceded in death by her daughter, Betty Jean and her son, Gerald E. Brown. She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Elsie Brown of Jonesboro, AR; her grandchildren, Carol Seyffer (Jurg) of Monument, CO, Sheryl Champlin (Pat) of Little Elm, TX, Gerald E. FENSTER, George J., 88, Co-Founder, with his wife Kitty, of the Fenster School and the Fenster Ranch Camp, passed away December 22, 1996. Four brothers preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, F. Kitty Fenster of Tucson; son, Kenneth (Mary Vine) Fenster; daughter, Beverly (Larry) Gammon; grandchildren, William (Barbara) Fenster, Jeffrey (Lori) Gammon, Craig (Karen) Gammon, Tami (Jerry) Lucey and 11 great-grandchildren. He was born February 12, 1908 in Brooklyn, New York, son of Joseph Fenster and Esther Fenster (a distant cousin). He was a graduate of New York University and Pace Institute of Accounting. In New York, he was the Comptroller for Consolidated Laundries Inc., a laundry holding company. He also owned various investment real estate properties. Moving to Tucson in 1941, he was employed as an accountant by M.M. Sundt Construction Co. and involved in the construction of Marana Air Base (Pinal Air Park) and Ft. Huachuca. Later he was an auditor with Consolidated Vultee Aircraft Co. (Convair), building B-24s and B-29s in Tucson. In 1944, he, together with his wife, Kitty, founded the Fenster Ranch School. He served as Managing Director for many years and was still, at the time of his death, an interested member of the Board of Trustees. During the 55 years he lived in Tucson he served on many civic boards and received numerous local and national awards. After his retirement as the active head of Fenster School he and his wife enjoyed many years of international travel. KLASTOW, Barbara Alice Holman, 68, died Friday, December 20, 1996. Born in Chicago, August 20, 1928, moved to Tucson in 1964. She was EKG Technician at St. Joseph’s Hospital for 15 years. Summer home in Michigan, where she ran an antique shop for 16 years. Survived and greatly missed by husband of 48 years, Leonard M.; daughters, Susan and Bruce Yanusz, Sharon and Paul Hoffman; two sons, Leonard and Lawrence. Also survived by grandchildren, Michael Harter, David Hoffman, Rebecca Hoffman, Lane Klastow, Lindsey Klastow; great-grandchild, Taylor Beck and one on the way. CAREY, Thomas James, 88, died Thursday, December 19, 1996. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Marguerite Carey of Tucson; a nephew and several cousins. Tom was born August 11, 1908 in Patagonia, AZ. After graduating from Nogales High School, he attended the University of Arizona where he played football for Pop Mckale, he later graduated from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. Tom retired from the United States Air Force as a Lt. Colonel, thereafter, he and his wife spent many years ranching in Florida and Virginia, he then returned to his beloved southern Arizona. Graveside Services for family and friends will be at at later date at the De La Ossa family plot at the Lochiel Arizona Cemetery.
